Experienced players at the MFC

I hear the argument that you need experienced players to help the development and shield some of the younger talent - I get that but then I think you really need to look at the players you want to keep because of their "experience."

I look at a first year player like Viney and imagine that players around him must say "wow - look at how he goes about - look at his attitude" and then I look at the "experienced" Sylvia and think to myself - should players within our club look at his contribution over 10 years and try and mirror it ?

We need to keep ( or attract) experienced players but only players whose experience is a positive for the club.

The only player we have lost over the last few years whose experience we could have used was Jnr ( and I am on record as saying the timing was right as his body was shot). Moloney, Sylvia ( and to a lesser extent Rivers) thanks but no thanks.

Thats why I gave him - " to a lesser" extent.

The "experience" I like at the club is the Jones and Viney experience - the tougher it is the harder they go at it....everyone else discussed in my opinion are just old players

I think we're getting there.Despite what some think there is still a bagful of experience ( the right sort ) at the. We're just doing some weeding.

I guess my point is that you can equate experience with age but that experience is not necessarily experience you want to build a good culture or playing group around.

Agree. And on record for the same thing, and still believe to this day it was right at the time, because it was shot.

I have always had the feeling that 186 was a pivotal point in our journey to the bottom.

Just a minor point. I don't think 186 should be given as much 'status' as it has been given here on Demonland. In truth it has been 7 horrible years with the previous 40 odd not much better apart from occasional highlights. Our renaissance is not about fixing what went wrong on one day in Geelong but what has been endemically problematic for years.

Just a minor point. I don't think 186 should be given as much 'status' as it has been given here on Demonland. In truth it has been 7 horrible years with the previous 40 odd not much better apart from occasional highlights. Our renaissance is not about fixing what went wrong on one day in Geelong but what has been endemically problematic for years.

186 was not the cause of all of our problems but it was the day where a line in the sand needed to be drawn. It was like a house that had had it's foundations eaten out by termites and it was only on that day was it understood how much damage had been done. That day was the day the house collapsed.
