offer Savage 3-yr deal. offer hawks pick 21 (sylvia compo). hawks give us Savage and pick 38.

We have to get Savage. Exactly what MFC needs. Hawks do not want him going to a serious competitor

Agree this seems like a reasonable deal for all parties.

Agreed - although I do think having a pick in the early 20's would be nice (could probably still get a nice mid). But I don't know what the depth is like in this draft.

Edited by Young Dee

Maybe not.

Depends on what Carlton are offering though.

If they offer 1st round and we offer a 3rd round, I can't imagine Hawthorn would care where his preference is.

if Carlton offer a first round pick for savage, then they can have him.... He value is fourth round.... Late third at best...

Would much prefer to spend the second rounder on Myers over Savage, or even take it to the draft if necessary. Definitely not worth a pick in the 20s.

most hawks supporters I know rate this bloke and are annoyed he is leaving potentially. Which makes me want us to try very hard to get his siggie

Why would they be annoyed other than for the usual "let's hoard all our players" syndrome footy supporters seem to have? He's not in their best 22 and it's stupid to think that a player would be happy just kicking around in the twos waiting for his opportunity forever. A player in that situation would have my blessing.

Looks like he's probably off to Brisbane or possibly Carlton as Hawthorn is after Longer or maybe Hampson. We have a few rucks but none that I think would interest the Hawks, maybe Gawn or even Fitzpatrick but I don't think we'd want to give either of then up for Savage.

I'll be in the minority here but I'd trade Fitzy for Savage, although he is not a true ruckman like Longer or Hampson so I doubt the Hawks would go for it.

Yeah I agree on both points.

They already have Hale as a forward who can ruck well and, more so than Fitzy, kick straight.

True. Never said they would go for it, merely said I would trade Fitzy for Savage if that was ever a deal on the table.

Fitzy is displaying versatility and goal kicking ability that exceed the impact Savage would have on a game.

I think we may need Chapman for a year,to teach the young mids we draft how to get ball.

He is the 4th tall forward behind Clark, Dawes and Hogan, and the 4th ruckman behind Gawn, Spencer and Jamar. He is expendable. Savage would be very, very handy for our midfield. He certainly isn't a saviour but he is worth more to our team at the minute than Fitzy.

I would trade fitzy for only a top line mid.

He is one of the best prospects on our list. Blokes with his skill sets don't come along too often.

Do not trade unless it is a must.

I'd rather trade Spencer if any of our rucks

Yeah but no one would want him. Fitzpatrick seems more of a forward than a ruck and we have 3 key forwards ahead of him plus Howe and Watts if they go down there. The only other ruck who would attract some interest from other clubs would be Gawn - he has potential to be become a very good player but isn't that good below his knees, has a history of knee problems and doesn't have a tank (yet). We'd probably be better off hanging onto him but you would consider trading him if the right one came along and we could make do with any combo of Fitzpatrick/Spencer & Clark in the ruck going forward. We need mids and you have to give up something other clubs want if you're going to trade them in.

Hawthorn want a ruckman, and Longer is at the top of their list. Brisbane have already stated their interest in Savage. These two sides will be talking early Monday morning. Let us hope the dees can get a word in before any paperwork gets submitted.

Savage to Brissie and Longer to the Hawks with some pick swapping looks like a no brainer.

You're right that Fitz is the most expendable of the talls but in a trade of Fitz for Savage, we'd be losing out.

Good talls are a much more valuable commodity than average midfielders.

not when you dont even have a reasonable stock of 'average' midfielders !!!

This isnt about collecting Footy cards, its not about having a 5th reserve tall etc, its about getting the bloody midfield into something approaching a better than VFL grade rabble and being competitive.

If Fitzy is part of a deal , so be it

He may rank poorly in those two areas but I see him as our only 2nd ruckman going forward. (20-30% rucking)

We hope that in 1-2 years Gawn is beating most ruckman but he will always need a 2nd ruckman.

Spencer and Jamar will be moving on shortly and they aren't 2nd ruckmans anyway.

We will be lucky to have all three of Clark, Dawes and Hogan on the field at the same time.

He's value will only increase if we keep him so it would be silly to get rid of him now.

Who knows if he improves his rucking he could easily become a 1st ruckman.

For now we can keep him as a 2nd ruckman and a backup for when Gawn goes down.

In the era of substitutes and restricted interchanges a player who can play as forward and relieving ruckman is quite valuable. And for us that is Fitzpatrick.

Clark could also do it but is more value for us playing as a key forward rotating between deep forward 50 and high half forward pushing into the midfield.

In terms of Rucks I would rank them in order. Gawn. Spencer. Jamar. Gawn will hopefully have an uniterrupted pre season and be ready to assume the mantle of first ruck. Athletic for his height, can take a mark and win tap outs and can create a real mismatch when going forward. Spencer is deceptively athletic and has the hardness which you like to see in a ruckman. Needs to kep working on his ruckwork and marking. Jamar is generally injured for part of the season and has not recaptured his all oz form of a few years ago. Backup/Ruck Coach for mine.

Savage is a undoubtedly talented running mid. Smart footballer who uses the ball well and can kick a long goal. I would be happy with using a second rounder on him ie the Sylvia comp pick if it is after our second round pick. Clark, Hogan and Dawes would love to see him running down the wing to deliver the ball to them.

As he is contracted Hawk's wants will partly determine his destination and it seems they are after a ruckman as has been pointed out. Hard to see how they would go past Longer if thats the case.

Sorry disagree.

Fitzy did ok on occasion last year. He is also 200cm+, young ,fast and coming on. If someone wants a ruckman from us for Savage ( who currently is essentially a VFL player) I believe we have other options, but not someone on the up. Also would like to see what Roos can do with Fitzy. IMO we would be getting well and truly screwed offering up Fitzy on a smaller type at this point. We simply need to see more of what Fitzy can do.

Yes danger signs here

Lions get : Savage + HFC 1st round pick 18

Hawks get: Longer + BLFC 3nd rd pick 45 ...looks likely.

MFC needs some creative thinking

my point is very simple...priority is mids. Fitzy isn't a priority. We have any number filling some of these roles. We haven next to none filling the mids list. We have a very shallow pool there

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
