I'm confident he won't be passing the reins across until he has confidence in them delivering success.

No, it won't be Voss, he hasn't got the communication skills and had his players offside. Voss doesn't understand how to let go and delegate, he's not a good listener and this is a big problem.

Roos is a very good communicator and knows how to tap into the people around him, this is the type we need to take over. Ling is one I would look at but his only problem is he has been in the media for a couple of years, Roos will be looking for someone in the system working with a successful club to help him out (smart man Roos) so Simpson and Tudor would be at the top of the list.

I still wouldn't completely rule Ling out though, his people skills and understanding of the game would be enticing.

Adam Simpson would be a good get for this role, or Mark bickley

Voss is a good choice. Has learnt from mistakes likely to want to learn from Roos. Has already shown he can coach at the highest level so it only has upside.

Unless they land a senior gig this year I expect it will be one of Tudor or Simpson but would hope that Bickley is in the mix as well. I don't rate Vossy (as his wife calls him) I think he comes across a bit of a [censored] and doubt he would listen to anyone but himself. Would love to see any of Micky O, Junior or Simon Black at the club in some capacity next year.

Roos sees himself as a Manager, as much as anything. He's going to change the whole ethos of the club. And two-three years is plenty of time to do that. And importantly, he'll be able to lay foundations built of concrete, not sand. The legacy he'll leave will be long-lasting.

I like the fact that they're upfront about the succession plan, as the whole club can buy into the blueprint. And they've immediately made the club the most attractive proposition in the market place for any budding senior coach that thinks he can learn from the best and ease into the role.

It's different, which is why some don't like it. But Roos wouldn't have come any other way and in my opinion it gives us the best chance at the real success we've craved. It doesn't matter who's standing next to the premiership captain on GF day.

Some don't like it because they don't think it will be enough time, and that making the decision on the next coach 2 or 3 years away could blow up in our face.

I completely understand that point of view, but I agree that the effects of allowing Roos to set us straight will be felt for, hopefully, decades after he has left.

In that regard, 2 years or 5 years - it is largely irrelevant, and having your next coach learning under Roos gives you stability and a future coach with an excellent pedigree.

I would like to see a successor who has some of Roos' qualities in that they possess a history of elite performance as a player, the intellectual ability to see things clearly and apply them equally well, and is a great communicator... For this reason, I believe Ling would be worth pursuing, but if he is ruling himself out at this point, I can only think of two others who would fit the mould at this point... one is Brett Kirk, but the other is a real smokey (get ready to laugh) and is still playing, and that is Bob Murphy. Obviously he has no experience in the coaching caper, but I get the feeling he would take to it with ease.

• Hasn't spent a lot of time thinking about Melbourne's list, but has been meeting Trengove on a semi-regular list
• 'Talent-wise', isn't sold on our list, but says there are some 'fantastic kids' on our list

If Ling wants to be an assistant then head coach then this is his chance to learn from the best and have a guaranteed coaching gig when Roos finishes. Seems beyond dumb if Ling stays in the media for a year then dips his toes in the water. If Ling doesn't take it he can enjoy moving interstate and then waiting for someone to get fired and then join the merry go round of applying for the job. I'm sure he has thought of this and PJ has/will tell him so.

Ling saying "I'll start coaching in 12 months" is basically him saying "I'd be willing to start coaching now if the offer is good enough."

I think in today's Footy, the Senior Assistant should be permanently there, who is always the RightHand man, out of the media glare. A savvy type who has a great relationship with the HeadCoach, but wants to be the permanent 2ic.

I think the next head coach should come from one of the assistants, who'll spend the next few years learning from Roosy & the Senior Assistant.

Was told from a mate with sources at the Swans that Jude Bolton will be an assistant at the Dees next year. Not sure how reliable it is, but interesting

If Roos thinks Ling is the right man I would back him. Remember that Roos has overseen two of probably the best coaches in the AFL currently (maybe two of the top three).
