No, but they weren't overly pleased.

I think the big difference between Cronulla and Essendon is the duration and volume of injections.

Cronulla's regime only lasted a few weeks. Essendon's was far longer and more systematic.

I very much doubt any of the players will get less than 6 months of actual game time ban. Maybe a backdated 1 year ban that sees them miss the preseason and half of the 2015 season.

Anything less and I reckon WADA would override.

Just my opinion.

THE World Anti-Doping Agency has issued a stinging rebuke of ASADA and the Australian government, declaring they alone were responsible for the inordinate delays in the investigation that led to 12 past and present Cronulla players receiving backdated suspensions over the NRL supplement scandal.

WADA also made it clear it was not happy with the process that led to the players being offered 12-month bans, but had elected not to appeal because to do so would not advance the fight against doping in any meaningful way.

I don't think the re-issuing of the show cause notices was anything unexpected.

Of course it was splashed all over the front pages of the newspapers "350 page document per player" etc etc

I was happy to hear about it, for two reasons.

It was finally giving the players what they have been asking for, ASADAS version of events, and secondly, it was another step towards a conclusion to the saga.

Had a laugh during tonight's Four Corners. The report was about drugs and in particular ice, meth and assorted amphetamines. The show went to one house where the whole family were meth heads and crack fiends and there in the background hanging over a rail was an Essendon scarf.

Weird. Carrying on like they're Ruben Carter or Liu Xiao Bo when in fact their entire court case consists of nothing more than a desperate search for a technicality which will prevent the truth from coming out.

Surely it is a great conflict of interest for the AFL to be involved - on the one hand they have an interest in preserving the drug-free integrity of the game, on the other they have an interest in preserving their financial empire and keeping Essendon supporters and their sympathisers happy. How can they make decisions that won't be tainted one way or the other or even both. And then ASADA/WADA can appeal - why not go straight to them or, since they are in a prosecuting role, to an independent body.

WADA/ASADA can appeal, but my understanding is that it would be to the Court of Arbitration in sport, an internationally based sporting body. There is very little room for local politics to influence them.

On these issues, if you look at the history, both here and internationally, WADA should be described as "activist" in these matters. Very little escapes their attention if they believe local,bodies are being lenient for any reason. I believe anything less than two year bans on Essendon, given their consistently obstructionist behaviour, would be seen by WADA IMHO as lenient. Little, hird, Thompson will not escape. The players will get penalties, so will the officials, it might just come in a different form.

It is very interesting to follow the utterances of John Fahey, ex premier of NSW and immediate past global president of WADA. He I think could, or should, be seen as the unofficial spokesperson for WADA in Australia. He has been very consistent in insisting that the law should take its course and Essendon will attract harsh penalties because of the systematic nature of their drug abuse, and their subsequent obstructionist behaviour after they were found out (neither of which applied to Cronulla).

Controversial, however as a member I'd like transparency on this. I think that as members we deserve to know exactly what questions the MFC posed to Simon Goodwin (about his degree of involvement in the Essendon fiasco) and what his responses were.

The only example of which I'm aware is the WADA response to the deals ASADA cut with the NRL players. It came out as a bit of a lecture to ASADA suggesting that it was prepared to tolerate the laxity of the sanctions in that case but not to go there in future. WADA has a complex anti doping code to uphold and the impression I gained was that it expected support in that regard from this country's anti doping body. I got the impression that giving out three match penalties when athletes bound by the code elsewhere get 12 to 24 months isn't going to be tolerated.

Yes WJ, i agree. It is significant that those players who are (1) no longer at Essendon (2) taken out their own legal counsel are the ones rumoured to be about to "break ranks" on the players saying they will not deal and admit guilt.

On the vested interest of the legal profession, the way Hird paraded the "new advice" upon the announcement he will challenge the verdict "because our lawyers advise we have an 80% chance of winning". Well I have news for JH. They usually do, when there are no consequences for them if they lose and they are being paid $10k plus a day. Hird (and Tania) are gifts who keep on giving - both sociopaths, seemingly with unlimited resources, and extremely vulnerable to flattery and being told what they want to hear.

I am flabbergasted.

The more fight the players and their lawyers fight this, the worse the ban will be. Them saying the NRL players regret their decision seems pretty far-fetched to me. Maybe the meat heads think they didn't do anything wrong and 3 weeks was too much. They got off very very lightly. Any chance of a deal like that for the AFL players goes right out the window the more they keep arguing.
