The drugs issue is, I would imagine, far more serious and potentially far more damaging to the AFL's brand, in which case, why would it not be possible that the Tanking case will be dismissed on the basis that the evidence was far too inconclusive (a much easier conclusion to reach than a case where drug abuse is involved). Then they can concentrate all of their efforts in sorting out a potentially much more far reaching problem (barrel of monkeys compared to our can of worms).

The other point in the comparison is whilst you can make arguments about who knew what substances who was taking , you either have taken a banned substance or you havent. It is definitive. From my reading of the evidence in the tanking debate (from the papers) it is subjective.

On the bomber boards someone has said it is SARMS they were using. If so, this is really bad [censored]. Looking through what it does and how it works, I would put it in the massively high risk category for long-term impact on your health and probably some forms of cancer. I really hope they haven't been stupid enough to go down that path.

I really think that the AFL will want the Tanking issue out of the way now post haste so that they can concentrate all of their efforts on this latest debacle, and what better time to sweep our case under the carpet than now. They know that if they bring in a guilty finding against us, they will have a long and protracted court case to deal with... what do you think they would rather deal with, a few journos bad mouthing them over their relenting (I think you will find there would be a few clubs breathing heavy sighs of relief if the accusations are dismissed), or the serious business of cleaning up the drugs issue?

The changes to the way in which priority picks are handled has virtually ensured tanking will no longer happen, so in a way that problem has already been solved, but the drugs issue is not going to disappear unless a genuinely concerted effort is made across the whole comp (and even that is no guarantee).

But we beat them in the first half right?

Whilst its nice to have another club in the gun other than Melbourne this is a shocker for footy and i sincerely hope they are cleared of wrongdoing.

The potential ramifications are mind boggling. For starters it would appear that if it was proven a player used a banned substance the minimum they would get would be 12 months out of the game but more likely 24 (even though the base penalty under WADA is 2 years there appears to be some scope for mitigating circumstances to reduce that?).

If multiple players are banned they will struggle to field a side which apart from anything else will smash revenues (no ANZAC game for starters) and you'd imagine Channel 7 and Foxtel will be wanting a refund on the billion they paid for tv rights. We can forget equalization payments if that happens and the money they are pouring into GWS might slow to a trickle.

The AFL have taken a massive financial gamble with GWS and a big drop in revenue could threaten the financial viability of the league. This is just one of the many potential terrible outcomes of all of this - the fall out will not stop at Essendon's door. All clubs will suffer, the AFL brand will suffer, it would be harder to get sponsorship into the game (think back to the hit on NRL when its reputation was smashed 20 odd years ago -its only recovering now) and on and on.

We dont know if they have smoking gun evidence that links Club official actions to intent. IMO this would be definitive and not subjective. The speculation on DLand is certainly subjective!

While i am glad its not MFC for once, its not good for the LT interests of the game to have a cornerstone club crippled. Its not good for the health of the game and MFC.

I am wondering whether the Wade Lees (Casey) 18 month suspension provides a litmus test for possible penalties.

As some of you know I am close friends with a very high profile, senior player from another club. If you know who this player is please do not mention the name on this forum.

Mid last year I was speaking to him about recreation drugs in the AFL and he said that the problem with recreation drugs in the AFL was less than it was 5 years ago, and less than in the general community. He said he could not understand why the AFL was putting so much effort into recreational drugs as in his opinion performance enhancing drugs were the real problem. He then went onto say that a new substance was widely used at Essendon and Collingwood. Further players from other clubs were also on this new substance. He said that this substance could not be tested for and he thought was not yet explicitly on the banned list. This substance gave benefit to strength, injury recovery, training and match recovery and endurance.

In a recent conversation about Lance Armstrong he again complained about doping in the AFL. What this tells me that inside AFL circles this problem has been known about for some time. The AFL has been slow in reacting to this.

My first thought on this issue was 'Where is the journalist troll (Caro)' surely she is not still on holidays!!!
