I'm surprised we'd even bother re-rookieing him. I don't buy into this shallow draft crap. They are out there. Last year was "shallow" too and vandenBerg and White in last years Rookie Draft both possess more AFL qualities than Michie, in my opinion.

I'd use the rookie spot on a kid with a couple of the right traits (i.e. White's kicking or vandenBerg's size, strength, agility & aggression) over Michie who doesn't have the speed, size, skill or aggression to make it at AFL level.

Next year we are every chance to:

Delist: Terlich, M Jones, Pedersen, Spencer, Newton, Hunt, King

Retire: Trengove, ?Grimes, ?Dawes

Free agent: Watts

There will be changes and there will be experience lost.

Keeping Michie in the hope that he finds some improvement is a way of protecting the bottom 10 spots on the list from being full of kids who can't come in to the side and maybe even struggle at Casey.

5 picks in this draft is plenty and it means we aren't over stocked with youth.

We are getting right towards the bottom in average age and games played now and we certainly have invested in enough quality kids. I'd love to replace Terlich, Matt Jones and Spencer with better depth options, but that's the reality of poor list management decisions in the passed and we aren't stacked with list cloggers. Don't be too harsh on Michie due to situation of the past and other players.

Next year we are every chance to:

Needs to stay focused and not let it be too much of a setback.

I'll be annoyed if someone else picks him up. All he's ever needed is opportunities to play consecutive games, ala the end of this season and the one prior. I almost get frustrated on his behalf with the way he's been managed.

He's a required player for 2016 in my mind. I see improvement in him.

I will qualify that statement with the statement that he will never be an A grader but is the kind of bloke who could be a decent depth player; the kind of bloke who plays roughly 16 games a year but is no cert to get in every week.

Good move as we would have been wasting pick 50 - with Carlton delisting so many there now may be about 65 picks in actual draft I think and if we had not delisted Michie we would have been conceding about 18 picks - rookie pick 6.

The good thing is that no club will be desperate to select a 24-year-old inside mid who is not a big tackler and has been let go by two clubs.

That is not to say that Viv is not a handy player and worthy of our list.

If you watched him in the VFL he could dominate and was very adept at reading the ball-ups - the question is whether he has enough pace and hard working traits to become an AFL regular and ultimately he's a bit of a back-up for Nat Jones.

The delisting and subsequent re-rookie-ing may help him realise he has to tackle more regularly - this will definitely be his last chance to make it.

By contrast, it's hard to see how Matt Jones or Terlich could improve at their age and significantly they have only one more year left.

Both are really good VFL players and hard-working trainers - so it's good to have them around. Same applies to Pedo and Newton.

You can't have 44 genuinely good players - that would only create bickering.

You need 5-6 prospects who won't get an AFL game and 5-6 hard-working VFL types as back-ups.

I reckon we are getting close to having a really deep list all of whom deserve a game - maybe we now bat down to 30.

None of these three were dropped by their clubs despite 2 ending up being DFA. Freo were very unhappy to lose Michie. Likewise Crows and Port wanted to hang on to Riley and Newton but both were out of contract and wanted to chase better opportunities at Dees. They weren't worth anything as trade picks so were delisted so we could pick them up. I thought Michie was starting to show a bit. His last 4 games were promising. Newton also was starting to show something by the end of the year.

What do you want us to do in the future?

Not pay players? Take extra late round rookie picks? Lose games that (despite mostly ordinary performances) Michie, Riley and Newton contributed to in the last 2 years?

We needed to try some more experienced players in that bottom 10-15 on the list to support the kids at Casey and to try and find a diamond in the rough. Almost every club has done it and particularly clubs with poor lists always do it.

Richmond have been doing it for much longer than we have and despite having some elite players and an ok middle core they have to keep doing it because they haven't found any depth. Hopefully we have and besides redrafting Michie we will have 5 live picks in the draft for more kids.

Michie is too good for VFL but no quite settled into AFL. I think he is very very unlucky to be delisted and MUST get rookied.

M Jones, Terlich & Hunt must all relieved as they are the list cloggers IMO

Without the injuries he would have finished the year at Casey.

For a trade pick 54, Viv is undeniably good value.

As other posters have noted, Viv has undoubtedly been squeezed out as a result of the (now clearly) regrettable re-contracting of Terlich and M.Jones.

For me, Viv has significantly more upside than Terlich or Jones - his last 4 games, his effort as sub in the Feo game, and his sublimely well-weighted kick to Angus Brayshaw (who then ran on and burnt off Ziebell to snag an inspirational goal) suggested that he might just have a bit more class than is commonly attributed to him.

No doubt he needs to tackle more, but I felt that he seemed to have improved his tank this year to show that he had the capacity to do the fabled 'two-way running' that the modern game seems to popularly demand.

Definitely worth rookie spot for 2016 - in fact, if the draft is as shallow as frequently stated, I would have no hesitation in re-drafting Viv with a 4th or 5th round pick on a 1 year contract.
