The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

It's all a about equalization.

Look at the hawks for example.

We will get a good pick for Sylvia. He was as important to us as buddy was to the dorks.

U made me laugh t.

It's got nothing to do with equalisation and more to do with whether the AFL decide we get a good or rubbish pick for Col.

If I recall correctly the afl said we have a list with a lot of potential when deciding on the pp.

I wouldn't hold you're breath in regards to the pick for Col.

Do you somehow forget that Ward also went to GWS as a FA for big coin?

I doubt Ward could care less what Shaw is on, let alone being annoyed.

Yeah.....double the paper.....let's see what that does to his psyche.

Everyone has a price, Machsy boy!

I am really sorry to correct you here but Colin was an UFA because he has 'played' at MFC for 10 years. 2004 was his first year.

The top 10 earners rule applies to players OOC after 8 or 9 years and are not in the top 10 earners at the club; they are UFA.

Sylvia was most definitely very well paid at Melbourne.

Ok, makes sense. Although I remember there was some conjecture over Sylvia's status as restricted or unrestricted. You would think counting to ten would have been a pretty black and white decision.

Perhaps it is just my defensive mechanism kicking in and predicting Band 4.

At the footy late in the year, It was a stock standard home game over by half time garbage footy so I took up my position at the bar. The conversation was all the trade period and free agency. A bloke joined in the conversation he stated Sylvia will be gone as a free agent and we will not get a priority pick but we will be over compensated for Sylvia. I think if you work through the AFL Free agent compensation Sylvia will be Band 4, we might get band 3 because we missed out on the priority pick, the same blokes that submitted on the priority pick decided on the level of compensation for free agents.

This might happen, I think the PP was too hot but this might be ok. I think Port got looked after pretty well last year with their compo.

Jay Clarke sprouting on KB's show on SEN that we requested Steven Motlop and Mitch Duncan for Pick 2.

Says we'll hold Pick 2 and take Kelly and suggested that Wells would have laughed that deal off.

I know, I know, Jay Clarke, just passing on what I heard that he heard...

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be given 'overs' for Sylvia compo, but if the above case is true then it effectively means the AFL don't care at all about consistently dealing with clubs/picks/compo etc. Instead they look at all the vested interests and make a decision. By removing the old PP system and not releasing the details of the FA compo and new PP formulas, they can effectively cloak their motives and do whatever they want.

Extremely frustrating that this would occur from an institution that claims to have a priority of equalisation. It's nothing of the sort. They hand out what they want to hand out and hide behind secret formulas.

The PP should have nothing to do with Sylvia's compo. We either deserve the PP or not, depending on the formula. We either get band x or y for Sylvia, depending on the formula. But that would be in a world of fairness, a world that the AFL clearly does not inhabit.

I know Pistachio is a nut FFS. I talkin real nuts not mere flavouring. EG Clint would have unshelled almonds over the chocolate and suck them up his nostril. Subsequently, he could shoot them out his a... and kill people. I repeat ask yourself what would Clint do in this situation ..

I resemble that remark

Before Sylvia advised he was leaving, there were numerous posters here who expressed mixed feelings regarding what decision he would make.

He'll not be missed as Frawley, Garland or Jones would be missed.

I would not expect we'd receive much in the way of compensation for him.

In fact I wonder if he would be in the best 22 players at Freo.

And there's always the fact that on the day of Sylvia's departure Mahoney said the club expects band 2 or 3 compensation.

The FA compo formula is secret like the PP formula. It wasn't politic for the AFL to give us a PP even though it would appear that we should have met any reasonable formula. I'm more confident of Sylvia compensation being on the generous side - it's a way the AFL can help us with less controversy. I think Port was perceived to be a basket case at the end of 2012 and needed help and got generous FA compo. Unfortunately I don't think they'll be as generous as Band 1 - pick 3 wouldn't fly when Buddy delivers pick 19, but I reckon we'll get Band 3 pick 23 or maybe even Band 2 pick 20 if we're lucky.

I want Jay Clarke's job. You make stuff up and everyone knows that you did, yet you still get quite well paid to continue doing it...

I seriously cant remember when any of Jay Clarke's predictions or rumours turned out to be correct. I remember reading that he once said that Roos would never coach Melbourne.

I remember on twitter last year he said Angus Monfries had signed a four deal with us..

Is it so wild to predict that Jay Clark is hogans_heroes?

That's a more accurate 'rumour' than anything Clark comes up with.

I remember on twitter last year he said Angus Monfries had signed a four deal with us..

That would've been a nice result for us if that came true.

Monfries was good this year.

Jay Clark makes sh*t up...

That did not seriously happen.

Considering we are not leaking info since Jackson came on board. And also considering that Geelong do not discuss trades until they are complete. And then consider that the trade proposed would not happen it 100 years.

And finally considering Mr Clarke's previous history.

I confirm. Jay Clarke made this up.

Jay Clark is definitely in the wrong business. I think celebrity gossip ala Perez Hilton is more his game

Jay Clark, Clark Kent......hmmm??

'Jay its a quiet trade day - got any ideas?'

'Sure Ill just pick a club out of this pile and a player out of this pile and Ill run with it'

Pause...

'Ok, we have Pav heading to Geelong on a three year deal...'

Jared Polec is currently in Melbourne. Photo on his twitter saying he is visiting Melbourne today...
Perhaps the deal to an Adelaide club isn't going well and some Melbourne clubs have convinced him to have a talk? Would he add to our midfield at all? Or is he the wrong kind of player to target?

Don't Adelaide want our Sylvia compo to use on Polec?

So if we get Polec, they have no incentive to trade Vince to us?

I have no idea which is the better player if it comes to a choice :P

He sounds like a bellend the way he's been shopping himself around.

When has he shopped himself around? Wants to go to SA, clubs are bickering about best deal. Nothing to do with him

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
