I don't think there is any benefit in taking pot shots at a young bloke who has just been cut from a second club and effectively closing the door on his career & dreams.

He was a draft pick that just didn't work out for us unfortunately, poor management early could very well have lead to his demise. Seemed like an honest hard worker just not up to it at AFL level unfortunately.

he was soft and didnt give 100%

I know he just lost his job and all, but boy did we stuff that pick up.

He was a pea heart and a complete panic merchant. So woefully out of depth at AFL level.

He always reminded me of George Lakes.  Another Greek lad who was going to save us in the late 60's, early 70's. He never got going because of injuries. Toumpas got off on the wrong foot, to coin a phrase. I wish him, all the best.

Not so sure.

I think he would be a good outside midfielder at a club with solid inside mids. You never know, a rookie pick for us and he might flourish at a professional club like Melbourne.

no he was too soft-would never make it, jack watts went harder at the ball than toumpas and we know how his trade has panned out

Amazing how many top picks we blew in that era.

But we havent put a foot wrong for 4 years now.. what a recovery.  (Thanks Roosy and co.)

I think we under rate just how tough our midfield is now. I think we have the luxury of playing a couple of skilful softies.

Once a spud, always a spud. Delisted from Port. Thanks Neeld for drafting him ahead of wines and macrae.

IMVHO one shouldn’t  call anyone who was drafted and having the courage to even go  on to an AFL field  a spud.

He had performed at senior SANFL level in finals.

Sure he didn’t turn out like we had hoped, but he got further than (almost) anyone who posts here.

And, by the way, Neeld wasn’t the list manager, for all his many faults, so it was not he who drafted him.

It was Todd Viney who picked Toumpas.

It was actually Jack Viney who pushed for Toumpas over Wines. Go read your old articles.

No chance it was poor management.

He did not possess the required skills. His spacial and situational awareness, and lateral movement was terrible.

Shows the lottery that is the draft.

No. Jack Viney said that Toumpas was the best junior he had played with.

This gets mentioned, but it originated on here as without any evidence (only Wines-Viney friendship) and then just kept getting repeated until some people believed it.

It's 99% likely to be untrue.

His career is imo summarised in the final moments of round 1, 2016 vs GC.

Watch the highlights. The ball is coming to him in the goal square. He squibs, panicks, and handballs directly to a GC player. Luckily Lumumba intercepts the corresponding kick to nab a goal and seal the win, but that passage really epitomised Toumpas' career. I remember being at the game and seeing it happening, and the crowd letting out a collective groan. It's very audible on the highlights. Was never going to make it.

He clearly had the skills from his draft videos. He wasnt a speccy pick he was highly rated by everyone!

Maybe we threw him in the deep end?

Maybe the bright lights and cameras spooked him?

Agree 100% the draft is an absolute gamble. Great teams are built from it, some teams get reamed by it, us for 12 years and carlton currently.

Bit sad, not everyone makes the step though. Many have said we were right to take him where we did. Its not a science.

the overwhelming majority of melbourne supporters were advocating drafting wines, for too long melbourne had been drafting small scrawny kids eg. watts toumpas morton instead of big competetive units eg. oliver petracca. Glad we're over those days now

He was an outstanding junior ( saw him play in the SANFL) but very much and outside player. Surprised he turned into a potato.

Obviously we would have been better with Wines but I have a feeling he has peaked and will go down hill from now. Pace is an issue.

No ill feelings toward Jimmy. I wish him all the best.

Small setback for Toumpas, but if he truly wants it then I hope he sticks at it. Some players get better as they get older. Toumpas might be one of them. Good luck to him. There is no need to go down the road of Wines vs Toumpas, because if we had of taken Ollie Wines we probably wouldn't have the list we have now, and I believe we have the best list in the competition.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
