"There's a strong argument," Gil McLachlan on a Priority Pick.

Recommended Posts

May have previously been mentioned, but don't individual clubs have to "apply" for a Priority Pick?

If so, WTF are the Bulldogs whinging about whne they say we shouldn't get one? Why don't they just apply for one themsleves? There's a process in place, the MFC is just doing what is available to all clubs.

If buddy franklin joins up with gws, which would most likely put them out of the running for Tom Boyd, what are everyone's thoughts on trading say, our pick 2 to Carlton for yarran or Lucas and their pick 7ish, or st kilda for their pick 5ish and maybe a 2year deal for montagna or dal santo. I only mention this as IF gws would overlook Boyd, they would jump for the chance to get him.

It won't put them out of the running for Boyd, it has nothing to do with it. They will look for a trade and will want more than Yarran or Lucas.

My understanding is that GWS have already come out and said they'll be putting No.1 (Boyd) on the table, whether Franklin goes there or not.

It will be interesting to see if anyone has the courage to pay the price.

Dggs would be crazy not to consider offering Griffen. He's peaking just when they are rubbish, and whilst the jury is still out on Liam Jones, it's not looking promising.

Carlton will surely throw their hat in the ring.

freo might be interested in boyd also

The dogs have ruled out Griffen...Freo will be interesting but my bet is on Carlton, will they pay the price?

Ok. So add kristian jaksch onto that list of their tall forwards. Read all my post pal, was very circumstantial.

Read your post, just think they will use Boyd to trade into the senior players they need. Yarran or Lucas wouldn't fit the bill, maybe Gibbs and Yarran and a pick back, would Carlton be prepared to trade Murphy for a key forward? They won't get him for some package of fringe players.

I'm not sure Freo have the currency to spend, Fyfe but would they give him up?

Melbourne rjay. I meant trade our pick to them for yarran/Lucas and their first rounder.

As I said, outside the box, and very circumstantial. But if we add a player we need as well as a top 10 pick also, it could suit us better than taking aish/sheed and them needing another preseason or 2 before getting up to speed. If we grabbed a nick vlaustin, ollie wines type with their pick 7ish, plus the player, we also look after ourselves short and longer term.

Astonishing call from Caroline.

Pity no one on the panel pointed out to her that over the last seven years Melbourne has not finished higher than 12th, while the Dogs have made three preliminary finals.

She has a very short memory, unless it relates to a personal grudge of hers. That said, just about every AFL journalist has the memory of a gold fish.

If we get a priority pick after our second round pick I'd be sending it to GWS for Adams. Adams for pick 20 is a good deal for us. GWS may want a lower pick but he isn't worth a top 10 pick and we won't be able to get 15 or there abouts without trading off something else.

I'd also be willing to consider our second round and a player for Adams and their third round (about pick 40) if they want someone we are willing to give up.

They were just examples p-man. I think yarran will be offered around at the end of this season. You could make a case for any club though, freo- Chris mayne or viv michie, Adelaide- bernie vince, Brisbane- Jared polec, saints- montagna.

Purely speculating as I said it all depends on what gws want and what happens at number 1. But if we had the chance to downgrade from pick 2 to receive pick 6-14 plus a decent player, what would we be after? That was the hypothetical.

The PP as stated by the AFL, will now be at the discretion of the AFL and is based on sustained poor performance on the field. While some factors can be examined, it really goes back to sustained poor performance over a period of 2 or more years.

We IMO, are the only club that could qualify. The Dogs were successful in the last few years. GWS could not be considered for obvious reasons.

Fair enough, but if for argument's sake we were to finish 15/16th, this wouldn't alter things in any way? Whilst the previous years' performances are relevant, it is the state of the team right now that it really boils down to. Surely.

Agree. It's at the AFL's discretion and there are a number of factors to consider but importantly sustained lack of performance being the key.

It would be interesting if the AFL has already (under wraps rubber stamped it) used it's discretion upon Jackson's appointment/analysis/consultation, ie at ~Rd12/13, rather than "wait and see" until Round 23 with the interim coach and possible improvement.

And if the AFL are indeed keen on Roos as has been mentioned, I wonder what forms the "there would have to be a significant change" (catalyst, sorted agreement/incentive). No doubt there would be management change, structural change to meet needs, $$$ and draft assistance (discretionary powers perhaps).

Yep, but there is no reason for us to trade a high pick for these type of players and I know they are only an example you are giving. Gibbs I would think about, it just depends on what recruiters see the upside of Sheed, Dunstan, Aish or Kelly. It also depends on us getting a PP then what GWS want to do with Boyd and also of course where we finish.

I think we will have an answer if not now at least when AD gets back from hols. Interesting to see if the AFL leaks it, as PJ has shown he's pretty good at keeping a secret and there is next to no board left to leak anything even if they know.

It's an interesting one this. I wouldn't be surprised if Carlton gave up Gibbs for pick 2 or 3. They do overrate their list though. I wouldn't want him even if they do offer him. We need ball extractors, not soft outside runners, with admittedly elite disposal.

When you say right now, I think you mean at the end of the season.

Lets say we beat GWS by a point and the Dogs by a point and finish above the Dogs, but get smashed and are uncompetitive in several games. Lets also say the Dogs lose their games by a goal or so, yet finish below us. What would you say our state would be then?

Hence the word circumstantial being in both of my replies to you...

Yes.

If that hypothetical plays out then certainly the case for a PP wouldn't be greatly weakened. My main point is that the way the rest of the year pans out, under a new coach, has to be relevant.

Of course it is relevant, but it would have to be some heavy improvement to outweigh the previous six years and our lack of a midfield.

I am sure you are right that the rest of the year will be relevant, unless the AFL have already indicated to us that it will happen. That could be part of a Coach negotiation.

Roos last week said he feels we should get a PP. Interesting!!!!!!

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
