THE DRAFT: AFL PROSPECTUS TOP 25

Recommended Posts

The AFL PROSPECTUS always has a great section on the potential draftees and its 2013 list is no exception. I will do a rundown on the top 25 over the coming weeks. The first looks and sounds like a real beauty.

James Aish (Norwood SA), midfielder, 183cm plays like Bryce Gibbs

James Aish emerged as an elite talent at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships where he won the Kevin Sheahan medal as the best performed player of the series. He is an exceptionally skilled right/footed wingman/midfielder with a terrific work ethic, ranking No. 1 at the championships in handball-receives, second in uncontested possessions and third for effective kicks. His leadership attributes saw him named co-captain of the AIS squad which toured New Zealand during the 2012 preseason. In March 2012, he became the youngest player to ever debut at SANFL league level for Norwood, debuting at 16 years and 144 days. Across the 2012 season he played 16 league matches , averaging 18 disposals at an elite efficiency of 83%, including the grand final win where he amassed 26 disposals and kicked one goal. His SANFL season was only interrupted by the 2011 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, where he played all five matches finishing with elite averages of 22 disposals, 16 uncontested possessions and six marks. He was subsequently selected in the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 All-Australian team.

FREAKO: The SANFL always produce a bottom-aged gun. Toumpas one year, Aish the next. This kid is a jet.

If Aish is a jet, then Jack Billings (and surely Melbourne couldn't resist the thought of a player with that given name?) is of close, if not equal stature.

Jack Billings (Oakleigh U18) midfielder, 179cm plays like Nick Dal Santo

Billings is a smooth moving attacking midfielder who is well balanced and an elite kick on his preferred left foot. First on the radar at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, he played mainly as a forward, averaging 14 disposals, along with elite averages of six marks, nine uncontested possessions and two goals per game across the three matches. In 2012 he juggled school commitments at Scotch College with TAC Cup football at the Oakleigh Chargers, but improved his endurance level allowing him to play in the midfield. He played 10 games with Oakleigh in the TAC Cup, averaging 19 disposals, seven marks and 12 uncontested possessions per game. At the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships he played four of five matches to average 15 disposals and an elite six marks per game, with the highlight his 16 disposals and five goals straight against South Australia at Norwood Oval. These performances resulted in his selection in the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 All-Australian team.

FREAKO: Great reader of the play and one grab overhead mark. This kid is already a gun!

And this kid's related to a current day great

Marcus Bontempelli Northern U18 midfielder, 188cm plays like Scott Pendlebury

Between school commitments at Marcellin College, Bontempelli played nine matches at TAC Cup level for the Northern Knights before breaking his collarbone in Round 15. He is a medium defender/midfielder with a raking left foot who breaks the lines and has good endurance. For the Knights he averaged 16 disposals, seven contested possessions, nine uncontested possessions, three inside 50s and three tackles per game.

FREAKO: Cousin of Nick Dal Santo. Yet to see much of him but like what we've seen so far.

I watched Luke Dunstan the other day and I'm sold on him. I realise Aish is meant to be the most talented but Dunstan just looked like he thrives on the contest which is what our side should aspire to.

Spot on! If we get a priority pick we'll go Aish also, but otherwise it's Dunstan or bust!

Aish seems to be in the mould of a Morton or Blease highly skilled outside player but MFC struggles to develop these types. Dunstan for me at this stage.

The AFL PROSPECTUS top 25 continues with yet another midfield prospect.

Nick Bourke (Geelong U18) midfielder 184 cm plays like Stephen Hill

Bourke is an athletic left-foot midfielder who, along with his game sense and vision, has great speed and endurance. Difficult to match up on, he has played the majority of his footy on the wing and at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships averaged 15 disposals, five marks and an elite disposal efficiency of 82%. In 12 matches with Geelong Falcons at TAC Cup level in 2012, his averages included 16 disposals, 11 uncontested possessions and five marks per game. He played in one game at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships for Vic Country against Queensland and ended up with 15 disposals, six marks and a goal from just 72 minutes of game-time.

FREAKO: Did well enough in one match at the 'Champs to convince us he can play.

Now for the young man who is being touted as #1.

Tom Boyd (Eastern U18) Key Forward 198 cm plays like Mitch Clark

We first spotted Boyd playing for Vic Metro at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships where he played all three matches to average 11 disposals and four marks per game, booting a total of four goals and two behinds. He followed up his impressive championships to play the final three matches of the 2011 TAC Cup season for the Northern Knights averaging seven disposals and four marks. Now at 198cm and 96kg, he has developed into a strong marking centre half-forward and a very accurate right-foot kick. He completed the 2012 TAC Cup season with 14 matches and was second on the goalkicking ladder with 44 goals and an elite conversion rate of 80%, while leading the competition in contested marks. From his four NAB AFL Under-18 Championship matches for Vic Metro he averaged nine disposals and four marks per game, again scoring four goals and two behinds.

FREAKO: The shortage of key position players coming through the system will ensure AFL clubs monitor him closely.

A 196cm ruckman, anyone?

Cameron Conlon (Notthern U18) Ruck 196cm plays like Patrick Ryder

A very mobile and athletic ruckman with an excellent leap, we first saw Conlon at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships where he was Vic Metro's leading tall, averaging six disposals and 10 hitouts per game including two hitouts-to-advantage. He also managed to squeeze in one TAC Cup match before season's end. Developing nicely with the ability to push forward and play as a leading forward, he played a further nine TAC Cup matches in 2012 for the Northern Knights to average seven disposals, three marks and again 10 hitouts per game, including two to advantage. Conlon also played the opening round of the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships against Northern Territory to return figures of four disposals and 12 hitouts, including five to advantage. His season however ended with shoulder surgery after sustaining an injury mid-June against the Western Jets.

FREAKO: Has good leg speed for his size. Should dominate TAC Cup in 2013.

The brother of Adelaide's Brad Crouch

Matt Crouch (North Ballarat U18) Midfielder182 cm plays like Simon Black

Just as his brother (Brad) did in 2011, Crouch was one of a handful of 17-year-olds to nominate for the GWS 2012 mini draft. Unlike his brother who was selected by Adelaide and spent 2012 playing SANFL footy at West Adelaide, the younger sibling was overlooked and will again play in the TAC Cup in 2013. The left footer played 15 matches for North Ballarat in 2012, finishing fourth in their B&F, averaging an elite 26 disposals, 12 contested and 14 uncontested possessions per game. At the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, he played four of five matches to average 19 disposals and 11 contested possessions, however, it was his standout performance against NSW/ACT that raised his profile. He thrived in the wet conditions, finishing with 29 disposals, 10 clearances and two goals as he dragged his team over the line by nine points.

FREAKO: Should dominate TAC Cup in 2013. Can go forward and have an impact as well.

boyd is the consensus pick at this stage apparently.

how that works if gws and the dees are the bottom two is anyone's guess - will gws want to add another tall to cameron and patton (and franklin)? same for the dees with clark, dawes, and hogan.

although i have heard good reports elsewhere that he's more than capable in the ruck...

crouch is as good as his brother from all reports.

Continuing the AFL PROSPECTUS top 25 potential draftees for 2013 with a late blooming midfielder from last year's TAC Cup premiers.

Trent Cutler (Oakleigh U18) 189cm, midfielder plays like Brendon Goddard

Cutler was a late inclusion into the TAC Cup system, not being a part of Oakleigh's development squads or playing at the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. Around school commitments for Trinity Grammar in 2012, however, he cemented his place in the 2012 Oakieigh Chargers TAC Cup team to play 12 matches including the grand final win against Gippsland. Improving each week, he is developing into a damaging midfielder with a super leap, and can also play forward or back as an extra tall. He was voted best on ground in only his second match for the Chargers, with 21 disposals and six marks against the Northern Knights in Round 4, and completed the season with averages of 17 disposals, nine contested possessions and four rebound 50s per game.

FREAKO: Flew under the radar in 2012 in a star-studded Chargers line-up. Will be one of their main men in 2013

This player impressed at last year's National Under 18 championships and returns as part of SA's strong squad in 2013.

Trent Dumont (Norwood) 184 cm, midfielder plays like Sam Mitchell

Dumont is a powerfully built inside midfielder who loves the contest and is a good decision maker when in possession. In 2011 he played nine Under-18 games for Norwood, averaging 26 disposals per game. After representing South Australia at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, he played the last H&A game of the season in the reserves against South Adelaide, returning healthy numbers of 25 disposals, four marks and one goal. At the under-16 championships that year, he played out of defence averaging 12 disposals and six contested possessions per game. Despite being only in Year 11 at Parade College, 2012 saw him average 18 disposals and four clearances, and score nine goals across 14 reserves matches in the SANFL, while at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, he played all five matches to average an elite 21 disposals, along with elite averages of four inside 50s and one score assist per game.

FREAKO: Has a great workman-like attitude and is always amongst the action.

The AFL PROSPECTUS says he plays like Jobe Watson. Is he the midfielder the Demons need in this draft?

Luke Dunstan (Eagles, SA) 184cm, midfielder, plays like Jobe Watson

It's not often we come across a player that has played over 40 or so under-aged matches at just 17-years-old, but Dunstan is one of them. We have covered 49 of his matches so far, starting back in 2010 when he played 13 matches at under-18 level for Woodville-West Torrens as a 15-year-old, averaging 19 disposals per game. Skip forward to 2012, and he has developed into a strong inside midfielder who has clean hands and rarely fumbles. At the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships the left-footed ball magnet played two games, averaging an elite 21 disposals, nine contested possessions and four clearances per game. At SANFL level he played three reserves and 11 under-18 games including the under-18 grand final win against Sturt where he amassed 25 disposals and four clearances.

FREAKO: Already has the body of a senior player. Let's hope he hasn't peaked too early.

Next up a key defender but he's just 190cm.

Darcy Gardiner (Geelong U18) 190cm, key defender, plays like Lachie Henderson

Gardiner is an on-field leader who can hold down a key position at both ends. He is a good decision maker with his ability to stay in the contest and win one-on-one duels his key strength. At the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships he returned modest averages of nine disposals, six contested possessions and three marks per game across three matches, however, at TAC Cup level in 2012, he cemented his place in the Geelong Falcons defence, playing 11 matches and averaging 12 disposals and seven contested possessions per game, averaging the third-most intercept marks of any Falcons player. He also played two matches for Vic Country at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, however, he dislocated his shoulder at training prior to the fourth round of the championships.

FREAKO: Has poise under pressure. Looking forward to a big 2013 from him.

The first of this selection of AFL PROSPECTUS top 25 is a small outside midfielder from the Dandenong Stingrays.

Billy Hartung (Dandenong U18) 176cm, midfielder plays like Marc Murphy

Hartung is a small outside midfielder who has pace, elite endurance and clean hands. He played all three matches at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, averaging 13 disposals, 10 uncontested possessions and three tackles per match. In 2012, between school commitments at The Peninsula School, he played 10 TAC Cup matches for the Dandenong Stingrays to average an elite 20 disposals, 13 uncontested possessions and four inside 50s, and also finish fourth in its B&F. He played four of Vic Country's five games at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, finishing with averages of 15 disposals, 10 uncontested possessions and five marks, ranking above average in both pressure acts and tackles. Hartung also played a representative schoolboys football match for AGS against the APS, racking up 43 disposals, 31 uncontested possessions, five inside 50s and four rebound 50s.

FREAKO: Has outstanding running capabilities and should step up to the next level in 2013.

SA are the favourites in the Under 18 championships. The prospectus highlights a key forward who plays like a Geelong defender? I'd like to see that!

Darcy Hourigan (South Adelaide, SA) 190cm, key forward plays like Tom Lonergan

With a basketball background, Hourigan is a strongly built key forward with the ability to take a very good overhead mark. He is rarely beaten in a one-on-one contest, and is also a long penetrating left foot kick. He averaged 13 disposals and three marks per game at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, returning to South Adelaide in the SANFL to play four reserves game and one league match. In 2012 he continued work on his athleticism, playing 14 reserve matches with averages of 13 disposals, four marks and two goals per game, while from his five league matches, he averaged six disposals and two marks per game, booting a total of six goals from seven scoring shots.

FREAKO: Has poise under pressure and sums up the situation well. Looking forward to a big 2013 from him.

This player is the son of a champion past player with North Melbourne and reputed to be the most skillful player in this year's batch of players

Josh Kelly (Sandringham U18) 180cm midfielder plays like Nick Dal Santo

Kelly is a superb left-foot attacking midfielder who impacts the stoppages. He has elite endurance, recording the quickest time for the 3km time trial at the 2012 NAB AFL Draft Combine. At the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships he represented Vic Metro averaging 13 disposals and seven uncontested possessions, ranking No. 1 for his side in tackles and second for effective long kicks. He played 11 TAC Cup matches for Sandringham in 2012 with elite averages of 19 disposals, 12 uncontested possessions and five marks per game. At the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, he played four matches, averaging 16 disposals, 10 uncontested possessions and five marks per game, with his best return in the victory over South Australia where he had 21 disposals, 14 uncontested possessions and three score assists.

FREAKO:Expect this youngster to be a prime selection next year.

If we get a pp.... Then Aish is a must selection! Aish, Tompas and Viney in the middle for ten years = premierships

The first player in this selection is a born leader.

Ben Lennon (Northern U18) 187cm, utility plays Like: Brendon Goddard

Since the age of seven, Lennon had captained every junior team he has played with Macleod. We first saw him at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships where he had elite averages of 17 disposals, 11 uncontested possessions and 106 Champion Data ranking points playing with Vic Metro. Strong overhead and a well-balanced right foot kick, he played mainly across half-back for the Northern Knights at TAC Cup level in 2012 where his elite averages included 18 disposals and five intercept possessions. At the

2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships he played three of five games, averaging 12 disposals and an elite six marks per match, with his performance against NT the standout, finishing with 20 disposals, 10 marks and two goals.

FREAKO: Have been impressed with this kid since his first U16 match for Metro. Has an excellent work ethic.

I trust that nobody has a problem with this player's name - especially where our club's been these past few years.

Dylan Loo (Perth, WA) 182cm, mid forward plays like Andrew Krakouer

With natural game sense, Loo is a very smart mid-forward who reads the play well and makes intelligent decisions when in possession. Despite having a slight body, he hunts the ball like few others do and at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships he was elite in multiple stat categories including 18 disposals, 10 contested possessions and five marks per game across three matches. Between school commitments at Wesley College, he played eight colts matches for Perth in 2012, averaging 16 disposals, 10 uncontested possessions and six marks.

FREAKO: Has all the skill and talent, however, needs to convince the industry footy is his number one priority.

The quintessential father/son for 2013.

Luke McDonald (Oakleigh U18) 187cm, midfielder plays like Luke Hodge

The Trinity Grammar midfielder was voted Vic Metro's MVP at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. At the Championships, his averages of 19 disposals, five intercept possessions, three inside 50s and four tackles were all in the elite bracket. He played schoolboy football with Trinity Grammar, where he co-captained his team to the 2012 AGSV football premiership win over Marcellin College, sealing it with a best-on-ground performance. He also played nine matches for Oakleigh, again racking up elite averages including 24 disposals, 15 uncontested possessions and four clearances. A penetrating left-foot kick, he played four NAB AFL Under-18 Championships for Vic Metro last season, averaging 15 disposals and 10 uncontested possessions and was subsequently selected in the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 All-Australian team.

FREAKO: The Roos will be licking their lips with this one. Another jet from the Oakleigh Chargers camp.

And to finish off this selection another midfielder.

Luke Reynolds 186cm, general forward plays like Jack Gunston

Similar to Luke Dunstan, Reynolds played at under-18 level for Port Adelaide in 2010, representing South Australia at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. A strong marking forward, Reynolds' averages at the under-16 championships included 11 disposals, three marks and three scoring shots per game. A good overhead mark and a penetrating left fool kick, his 1) under-18 SANFL games returned averages of 13 disposals and four marks, as well as total tally of 27 goals. In 2012 he played another five matches at under-18 level prior to debuting at reserves level thriving on the rise in standard. He averaged 12 disposals and five marks across his 11 matches, scored II goals for the season, and moved up to spend time in the midfield.

FREAKO: A fantastic overhead mark and good speed, this one has always been on our radar and won't disappoint.

There are some quality prospects among this group but we start with a "workman-like" defender.

Nick Robertson (West Perth, WA) 187cm general defender plays like Jack Ziebell

Robertson is a workman-like half back/midfielder who has elite endurance, however, injuries have hampered his past two years. He missed the entire 2011 season including the NAB AFL Under-16 Championship with stress fractures in his lower back and in 2012 played six colts matches for West Perth before dislocating his shoulder against Peel Thunder in Round 7. He worked hard to overcome this setback, representing Western Australia in the final two matches of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships where, despite injuring his shoulder again against Vic Metro, averaged 13 disposals, six contested possessions, three clearances and two rebound 50s per game. By season's end he had played 12 colts matches to average 17 disposals, three marks and two rebound 50s per game.

FREAKO Reads the ball well and is hard at it. Let's hope he can get his body right so we get a consistent look at him.

This player impressed last year at the under 18 championships.

Christian Salem (Sandringham U 18) 182cm midfielder plays like Jordan Lewis.

Salem is a hard running midfielder who battled injury for most of 2011, managing three matches at the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships. In 2012, alongside school commitments for Brighton Grammar, he played 10 TAC Cup matches with Sandringham and three matches for Vic Metro at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. He played predominately on the wing and across half back for the Dragons in 2012, averaging 21 disposals, 12 uncontested possessions, five marks and five tackles, while at state level his averages included nine disposals and three marks, rating above average for applying pressure and score assists.

FREAKO A lot of wow factor. Was a bit overawed at the U18 Champs but I'm confident he'll produce the goods in 2013.

A quality defender who will be up with the best at this year's draft.

Matthew Scharenberg (Glenelg, SA) 189cm, general defender plays like Corey Enright

Scharenberg is a medium-sized defender who is also comfortable in attack. At the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships he averaged an elite 16 disposals, eight contested possessions and four inside 50s per game. He rounded out 2011 with eight matches for Glenelg under- 18s, averaging 17 disposals and scaring 11 goals. In 2012 he played two under-18 games, six reserves and four league matches for Glenelg. He also represented South Australia at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. His performance across half back at the championships resulted in elite averages of 21 disposals, 14 uncontested possessions and seven marks per game and averaged the second-most score involvements of any defender. He also averaged the fourth-most Champion Data ranking points of any general defender at the championships and was named in the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 All-Australian team.

FREAKO Very mature for his age with a lot of upside. Expect to hear a lot about him in 2013.

This bloke impresses me as exactly the type of midfield player Melbourne needs but we won't see him in tomorrow's final day of the under 18 championships because of injury.

Domenic Sheed (Subiaco, WA) 184cm midfielder plays like Simon Black

Sheed is a quick thinker and prolific ball winner who thrives around the contests. At the 2011 NAB AFL Under-16 Championships his average of 20 disposals per game was the highest of any player, while his 18 uncontested possessions and six marks per game both ranked elite. He was hampered by adductor issues in early 2012, yet played 12 colts matches for Subiaco averaging 23 disposals, six marks and four inside 50s. He was also the only 17-year-old to play in the WAFL league last season, playing three matches averaging 17 disposals and five marks per match. For Western Australia at the 2012 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships, his run through the midfield resulted in averages of 15 disposals, four marks and three inside 50s per game.

FREAKO Like watching this kid and expect him to be one of the main WAFL products in 2013.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
