Kennett future MelbourneFC President?

Featured Replies

Or another idea, reinstate Kennett at Hawthorn and send us Clarkson!

Cool...thanks for the chuckle.....wading through the hate is getting tedious on here

The more I think about this, the more it excites me.

Kennett wants "the greatest challenge in sport", few are qualified to take that challenge. Jeff is.

Not without the members voting for it.

Yes but once he controlled a board which wants a merger and is in control of the 'facts' it could be very hard for members to counter it. After a season or so Kennet tells us we are bankrupt, makes little effort to turn it around and says the only solution is merger.

Surely there is someone with the right qualities out there who could do the job without the danger of being a person with pro-merger history.

EDITED TO ADD: I know many members are desperate but I am staggered that anyone would take such a risk. DM may be useless but when drowning it is better to look around for a new life buoy than grab a hold of the nearest shark.

Kevin Rudd has just announced he wants to lead the MFC.

Will no doubt pike at the last minute.

Why would we want someone from Hawthorne to lead us?

Next thing I will be reading is that Eddie want in as well (would not blame him as he is in Collingwood after all)

Ox is the man for the job, he's already got my vote.

Step one.... Replace CEO....

Step two.... Replace president and board

Step three.... Convince supporter/members that relocation is best for the club

Step four.... Relocate club

Maybe all the Melbourne supporters who are against the idea because of Kennett's political history, could go off and join the Western Bulldogs! Their No. 1 ticket holder, Gillard has an illustrious record in management!

No, there are other people who support the club that would be available and apparently Freeman has been brought on board for that purpose.

Firstly, where are they?

Secondly, forgive me for being cynical but why should the rank and file members have any confidence that another finance person is going to be any more successful than McLardy, Gardner, Szondy etc

Look at the bio's of our board members on the MFC website, majority are people involved in finance, insurance, economics, accountants etc the only one with any footy experience is Healy who is in a "casual vacancy" position. Clearly none of them have little to none idea about running a footy club or how to address the problem's Melbourne faces. Besides moving out to Casey (something which I think was set-up by the prior board) what exactly have they done to grow our supporter base? What have they done to expand our revenue streams? What business relationships have they used to bring sponsors on board? They seem like a bunch of abject failures in their roles at MFC if you ask me, despite what their finance/insurance etc pedigree is.

This is ridiculous scare mongering. This is exactly what Kennett would be doing everything in his power to stop from happening.

Stupid idea. Yeah and Eddie is going to become president of the bulldogs. Who are the idiotic members that approached him. Kennett was a hawthorn president for 7 years. He is a hawthorn supporter. He just cant switch that off. I think he thinks the football world has forgotten about him and wants the attention. Forget it. Imagine if Don went on to become president of another club. Its weird. Gp away Jeff we will sort it out.

Look at the grief he cause Clarko with his stupid comments.

Also he compared GWS to the 1st world war at Gallipoli. What a goose.

It was a dump.

It wasnt a dump - it was a festering sore on the landscape - calling it a dump was far too kind.

Can't argue with that.

We have gone nowhere but backwards.

We need people who truly believe this club is a huge challenge, that is worth resurrecting.

Let's see the Kennett ticket.

Kennett will get people through the gate.

Anyone who would vote for merger/relocation is an idiot regardless of the facts. Would rather die than merge and if the members voted for it they'd deserve whatever they got.

You have to love Melbourne supporters. The club is a basket case. It's seen no success for 50 years. It has an opportunity to have an achiever take over and give it a chance to become relevant. But no, it seems some don't like his personality. Some of you lot deserve the crap you witness each week.

As for merging ? He's already stated that Melbourne is a strong brand and I believe he retracted those comments years ago. CLEARLY, if he wants to become Chairman it's to have the club become a success in its own right. Even his ego would love that challenge.

It's bloody great scenario.

think you've missed the point here....

Well McLardy had a crack at him. First time I've seen him throw a punch with any venom.

You call that venom... Geez...

Just when I didnt think things could get any worse.

Change for the sake of change and with only limited thought of the consequences

Bimbo - change for the sake of change? Can you point us to the sandpit that you've had your head buried in over the last 50 years or so???? Change for the sake of change - most mindless post I've read anywhere for sometime. If ever a club was in dire need of change its the MFC. Oh Dear Bimbo, Oh Dear..........

Strewth. How has it come to this? A crisis junkie as president...Working on the reverse psychology/ curse thingy, perhaps he could say we will never beat the Cats in the big games. Going on a winning streak against the Cats could only help. Just saying :)

Isn't this the guy who turned the once beautiful Albert Park into a F1 race track ?

I'm sure there are better 'uncursed' candidates.

He also got the Motogp back from Eastern Creek to Phillip Island.

Good work on both counts.

He retracted years ago did he?? How do you explain this from April last year?:

Yes, maybe his ego is so big that he'd forget his past views in order to be seen as saviour. But I say again, why take the risk? There must be someone out there who can do the job without the attendant risk.

My opposition has nothing to do with his politics or personality. Why take the 'merger' risk? Some of you guys just sound so desperate.

You call that venom... Geez...

Well he hit back. sure its like Peewee Herman punching Mike Tyson, but it was the most venom (the only venom) hes used.

The problem isn't just his personality BH. It's how his personality impacts his brusque, tactless and inflexible management style. Victoria was a different beast when he took over. Cain wanted to cut spending and reduce the size of the public sector but the unions wouldn't allow him to do so. Victoria needed a more autocratic style of leadership in those days. In those days, there was too much consultation with a certain group when the silent majority was being ignored. What happened after 186 (I'm starting to sound like WYL) was that the playing groups concerns were mothballed and consultation was put in shade. We need to become a club that is respectful of all opinions, not just those of a select few.

Right now, we have the footy club in way too many different camps: those who were with the playing group during the reign of Schwab and those who were mates of the CEO, those who were pro-merger or anti-merger, those who were with Gutnick and those who were not. Some might think that those last two are old hat but I can guarantee there are those in the club who still hold enmities over these old battles. There needs to be some reconciliation between these groups and I think a bloke who once offered to sleep with the female contestants of a Greek beauty pageant and who was caught on a mobile phone describing a conversation with John Howard that was far from harmonious might not have the people skills to smooth over these personality clashes.

Must agree with BH Here. Some of you are actually scared of this club getting bigger, being part of September.

I encountered the same vibe from some in '87.

Girl i worked with was scared of what would happen, she was so used to losing.

Just imagine for a moment

THE MELBOURNE TOWN HALL DECKED OUT IN THE RED AND BLUE

Parade down Swanston St....

To get there we need Big Changes internally.

It must happen.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
