See my post earlier in the thread. The AFL has designated red a "dark" colour. The Bulldogs can use it because their clashing colour (white) is a "light" colour.

Silly I know, but you asked for an explination. That's as good as it gets for the AFL, I'm afraid.

Because it wasn't used as a "light" jumper, it was there to contrast the blue of the Eagles. Their white clash jumper must have been deemed to clash with the Eagles jumper as well.

It took a school girls competition entry to right the Port Power jumper design. Perhaps we need to come up with some concepts and put it to the club? I know people say it doesn't matter, but in the current commercial climate I would say merchandise revenue is important - otherwise there wouldn't be such a turnover of jumper designs by clubs - see Lions, Hawthorn

Still don't understand why the club doesn't use the secondary "MFC" traditional logo.

Seems natural to go down this path.

Melbourne appears to be the only club that replaces its prominent colours with a shade, and a jumper not even remotely representative of the club's traditional colours, guernsey or design.

And it really pisses me off seeing people wearing the clash jumper. It is a travesty. They always have been.

I can't understand the AFL's fixation with, and insistence on, clash strips. For over 100 years the competition coped when players were running around on quagmire grounds, covered in mud, yet somehow players seemed to be able to tell each other apart, so could fans, and the game evolved and thrived through those years. Now games are played on perfectly manicured and well drained stadiums, one even under cover, televised clearly with high definition cameras and equipment, but suddenly we're supposedly no longer able to tell one player or team from another.

Kick and scream all you like but current clash jumper is probably the best option we have.

If they want to have clash jumpers they should make it the same for all. For example the Tigers should have to have a white strip with yellow similar to ours. The Pies also should have to have a full white one as well as the Bombers. It should be fair so that every club has one or none do. It's pretty simple really but the AFL never make anything simple.

The main thing that bothers me is we seem to wear it as many or more times than our traditional strip. I thought it was originally for playing against teams like carlton and Adelaide. Now its pretty much all away games.

This issue gives me the sh*ts, they don't need to change the jumpers so dramatically, why we can't we just wear either a reverse of our traditional jumper or our 70's and 80's royal blue version with white shorts (or whatever is less likely to clash!) it's ridiculous, seriously it's common sense!! And even If we are the away team if we are playing a team like Geelong who are a team with white on there strip it's stupid for us to wear white shorts. If we play essendon away obviously our traditional is going to clash, chuck on the royal blue and white shorts, done! Problem solved!

If we are playing the doggies away obviously we wouldn't wear royal blue but guess what our traditional jumper doesnt clash, could use that....

There is always a combination that you can tinker with if the AFL just took a closer look at it

On the plus side at least the home and away jumpers aren't pink this year!!

Hawthorn have a jumper that are the colors of bodily waste and it hasn't stopped them from becoming one of the biggest clubs in Victoria.

The fact that we've been forced to wear a clash strip against St.Kilda in recent years when in fact it makes the clash far worse, is a perfect example. That we'd need to change jumpers against Port (black, white and teal v red and blue!) yet Carlton and Collingwood can play in their traditional jumpers against one another is bizarre. But if we have to adopt a clash jumper, I agree that a red version, similar to what was featured earlier in this post with the MFC monogram would be a preferred option and far more symbolic of our heritage than the white 'surrender special'.

Not really that bizzare Swooper. This is just another example of how this club lacks good governance and passionate football savvy leaders off the field.

They are mostly corporate/lawyer/accountant types, willing to roll over in order to comply with "authority". We lack a passionate strong voice, a visible outspoken leader to make a stand on issues like this.

They're also very silent on most of these issues without any feedback to the most important aspect of the club, its members.

Poor communication.

Lack of resolve.

No representation.

No outspoke voice or face at board level.

Poor Governance.

Change at the top is needed way before thinking of looking for a new coach, otherwise we'll just continue down the path of being the whipping boy of the AFL and a continual laughing stock on the field as well.

Put real leaders in at the top who are passionate about the club and are willing to fight tooth and nail to protect its heritage & brand both on and off the field then we might start to see a resurgence of a once great club and start earning a bit of respect.

I don't really see a problem in a red one, considering we wear our home jumper against Sydney and Gold Coast anyway. A red one with a demon or a MFC emblem on it. No more stupid white/silver mashups. And importantly, I'd like someone at the club who's passionate enough to negotiate this sort of thing

I actually find it absurd that the AFL go to these unnecessary extremes to separate the two teams in fear of someone getting them confused

then have the oversight to have runners wear a similar colors to the team they represent with the obvious exploit of running into a space where the opposition may deter to kick it to that position

I see no problem with any sides if we wear our traditional jersey for all home games and only change to the royal blue if we are the away side to Essendon or St Kilda!

I think we could show great leadership with taking them on with this, North, Richmond & Collingwood all have slight variations of their home strips, the colours remain the same just altered slightly.

I have to state I also prefer the traditional dark blue just want us to remain red & blue as much as possible.

No matter what anyone says the dark v light rule allegedly coming from the AFL is a cop out. The AFL is littered with grey areas & inconsistencies and IMO I would take them on, yes I know we have bigger issues but this is one where they are being ridiculous
