Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

We certainly cant have Watts and Strauss both squibbing it in the back half.

Watts Gawn and Davey in the forward line might very well work.

Anyway, its the last stop before Casey for Watts.

Gawn goes hard for contested spillages and it might galvanize Jack Watts.

Can someone tell me who Spencer rucked against at Essendon? I've read a few ppl say he dominated against a quality ruckmen. Hille and Bellchambers were in the seniors and Ryder was suspended, so not sure who it would have been.

Why is Merrett playing up forward for the Lions, we putting a team of midgets in our forward line are we.

There is also a pic on Twitter from 2 days ago with Sellar with a pressure bandage on his right calf so might be sore

"Watts and Strauss squibbing",some posters must really watch the game through beer goggles, Watts did some excellent presure work last week without being caught out, going to ground etc, you don't have to crash and bash to create pressure, that is why some commentators use the words implied pressure....the coaches must see something we don't see whouldn't you say, one week out and straight back in.

Also Strauss was excellent for Casey in the game I watched live

The only in that I can put down as definite in my opinion is McKenzie

Watched him live, he was better than the Essendon ruckman (don't know who it was) and this showed in the tap work, but it was all his other work, he was all over the ground, did one of his famous chases of a smaller player down the wing (which had contingent of Casey/MFC supporters applauding him when he came to the bench just after), did some good work when he was resting in the goal square, and defending

Stats: Jake Spencer 10 kicks, 9 handballs, 19 disposals, 3 marks, 7 tackles, 36 hit outs, 0 goals, 1 behind.

MFC website review Jake Spencer: Jake had a real impact on this game. His work ethic to compete in all aspects was really pleasing. He had 19 disposals, 37 hit outs, as well as six tackles, which was a great return, (slightly different stats)

Again spoken to coaches about him, they just want him to develop his game when resting forward, this is only area they regard as 'lacking', Max Gawn has jump on him in this area

It's good to hear he had a good game. Think he has definitely improved. Can't see them playing all three big guys as others have suggested, so would think for him to get a game he's going to have to replace Jamar.

Better than Rose coloured glasses...

Watts does do some things well but he scouts the pack and doesnt attack the ball too often.

We are better with Jack Watts than without him IMO, but he needs understand he isnt David Rhys-Jones who only looked like he was half hearted. Gawn eagerly fights for the pill which would put the acid on Jack if they were both deep in the forward line.

Stupid comment. Judd, Goddard, Watson and Ball all went to Private schools and they are not soft!

You = a bigot

Strauss has come back from a shoulder reconstruction and a more recent broken leg- tell me how that is soft.

Can't imagine either will be on our list next year though.

Watts will still be contracted next year

Strauss is yet to play more than two games but still retains alot of interest from other clubs - might want to give him a chance to prove himself?

What will be interesting is to see if Jamar can back up last weeks good performance. Having Gawn as the extra big man in the team may have given him the spells he need throughout the game to maintain a decent work rate and influence contests. With the loss of Clark though that may upset the balance so I'm tipping Spencer will get a guernsey this weekend.

In: Spencer, McKenzie, Kent

Out: Clark, Jetta, Viney

A lot of conjecture about Kents defensive work has been interesting reading. However, on the back of that last quarter effort (against GWS) on Sunday, I can see a player like Kent carving it up and driving the ball into the forward 50 similar to Daniel Rich.

Give the kid a go as a sub at least.

Who does Mckenzie go to assuming he plays? Rich, rockliff, moloney, zorko, black? not sure which other mids they have.

James frawley has a huge job with jonothan brown

Dean Terlich stays in. Couple of 2nd and 3 efforts on sunday in the last Q were great.

Reward him for it and encourage the same.

totally.

we can't drop anyone who is having a 'fair dinkum' crack at the contests.

We are approaching the business games, after the Lions game... a run of 6 important games, starting with the 'Blues', & ending with the QB/day game, followed by our midseason bye.

... we need to get Blease in for the Carlton game, after a couple of weeks of solid form, from both Blease @ Casey, & our senior team...

if watts is still in this week, he'd make a good swap for Blease, against the Blues... different types I know, but neither at this point, are main bearings of the drive train. We need as many drivers right now,,, & we can add the flair, along the journey.

I think a few here have gone for this -

In Blease McKenzie, Strauss

Out Jetta (suspended) Viney (rest) Clark (ankle)

I would move Jack Watts forward but accept that's probably unlikely based on the coach's apparent desire to make him a defender.

Jack as I remember it watts was moved to defence because he wasn't having a crack. last year he started to improve but this year seems to have gotten Too thoughtful again.

I'd like to see him go to Black. I rate Rich and Rockliff more highly, but Black always tears us up.

...and if Black was playing that would be a good call but he's yet to play a game this year.

by the way there is no way if he was playing you could rate Rich or Rockliff more highly,Black is one of the great players of the modern game.

I've read several reports saying Black is a chance to play this weekend.

I don't think Rich and Rockliff will ever reach the heights that Black did, and there's no doubt that Black is one of the greatest mids in the last 25 years. At this point in his career, though, I don't see him as being as good as Rich or Rockliff. While he is still very good, he is not the player he once was. He is 34, after all.

If he does play we will have to keep a close watch, as you say he has taken us apart many times in the past. Rich seems to be the one getting the tag these days and is not handling it well, if he is let loose like in the NAB series he is dangerous.

Sorry for reading your post the wrong way, Black is often underrated for such a great player, I love watching him play but hopefully we don't get to see him this weekend.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
