Is Colin Garland the worst Defender in the AFL?

No. He's low on confidence, in a defence being bombarded by opposition forward thrusts. Garland did some okay things tonight. I don't think many played four quarters tonight (the exception perhaps being Mitch Clark). The clumsiness was present almost universally by players in MFC jumpers. It's more an illustration of being belted week in week out, than it is of an ability to play the game.

Not many people will agree with me, but I still believe we have a core group of players, forwards and backs, that will make a great AFL team. Currently, I would point to a lack of structures, tackle counts and one percenters, along with our rucking capacity that condemn us to the bottom of the AFL table.

Gilies had an absolute shocker. He needs to watch the ball in the air and not watch his man, he is always out of position when the ball lands...

This is something that was all too clear tonight. He would approach the majority of contests out of position. Surely Geelong would have hammered correct positioning into him?

Clumsy and uncertain - but tried to take the game on at times. Would probably be the worst defender at most clubs except for ours.

Gillies is just clumsy and uncertain.

I reckon I built the anti-Garland bandwagon with my own two hands a couple of years ago, but at least he made some run tonight. But you can tell he is just sick to death of losing every week. He just doesn't care anymore, and to be honest I find it hard to muster up the passion to blame him.

Garland was the least of our problems. He was ok defensively and he tried to provide some run.

Someone needs to physical remove Gillies from this team forever. Worst defender I've seen at Melbourne, and I've sat through a lot of Alistair Nicholson. Totally and utterly hopeless. And lost his cool as well to give away dumb frees. Just epically terrible.

I agree. None of our defenders covered themselves in glory tonight but Gillies was unbelievably poor. McDonald had a shocker but that was less of a surprise (given his lack of game time)than Gillies' absolute buther's job. Garland did a couple of OK things and may be coming good again....hopefully.

All in all, a really bad night. Please don't put us on TV..it's embarrassing at the moment.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
