It goes back to last season with Sellar - rubbish up forward so put him down back where he excelled. Gillies and Pedersen are too early to make a call on but based on yesterday's form Gillies at least should be dropped.

Sellar to the back half, McDonald in for Gillies and play him forward.

Sellar is depth guys. He is our depth forward/ruck and our depth defender. In fairness to him he rucked ok but just isn't a forward. Mentally he struggles to play forward but can be a good defender. He isn't a problem and is worth a spot on the list.

Pedersen is our back up forward/ruck to go with Clark and Dawes and to be honest wasn't the worst yesterday. Besides when he dropped his head he didn't have an awful game considering. He found more of the ball than Clark and the rest of the forwards. Again he is a transition player whilst we wait for Hogan. I don't think he wastes a spot on the list.

Gilies on yesterday is a complete waste of a spot on a list. That is somewhat obvious when you remember Geelong cut him and no one wanted him. He's slow, unfit and just plain bad with ball in hand but its his defensive ability which is the worst thing. It's another poor recruitment. We already have Troy Davis we didn't need Gillies, plus if we knew how bad Gillies was we could of played Sellar in his rightful spot and god help us included Fitzpatrick for a different style of set up.

Dawes was out guys, we had to play Sellar and Pedersen. We move on from this topic and focus on how bad some experienced guys played because these 3 aren't the long term problem. Except it highlights our below par recruitment when you look at Monfries, Stephenson and Heath torching us.

Sellers dropped to marks under little or no pressure in front of goal in the early stages of the match that would have got us off to a much better start had he converted, instead he lost the ball they took down the other end and kicked a goal, this was a 2 and 4 goal turn around. I admit I have never been a bigger sellers fan as apart from his 5 goal haul in a practice match I have seldom seen him put in and gather enough possessions to warrant a spot on any team but ours.

I question how the recruiting department could have watched Pedersen and Gillies all year and thought they were capable of being in Melbourne's or any teams best 22.

How is Cam Pedersen a better player then the discarded Stefen Martin?

I'd be happy to see Pederson and Gillies not play for the MFC again.

Pederson shirked a contest, is CLEARLY very soft, I enjoyed Hartlett really getting into him - I'd do the same.

As for Gillies, I think he recoreded the most turnovers in a game, so that was good effort by him and should get him another go at it next week.

Sellar was ok down back last year, so he gets a pass first up.

Plus he actually had pre-season form, unlike the other 2 spuds.

I take it you will be putting up your hand to do countless hours of unpaid work....

Not afraid of unpaid work one little bit Bossdog but I have a feeling that the prestige of being on the board would have me placed in the queue somewhere around Port Augusta.

Can't believe you (and everyone else it seems) has missed Dan Nicholson! Would rather have Joel McDonald any day, at least I know he will go at 100%, same could be said of Rohan Bail.

Totally agree. I reckon I saw Dan Nicholson pull out of every contest and was scared all day. I couldn't believe this was the same guy they were saying was quick in preseason, he was slow, soft and scared.

Nicho is a fast runner on the track but has little awareness on the field...

Sellers five goal haul in that pracci were soft goals against a weak defense. Please I hope the coaches can realize he cannot play footy. Until he can hold strong marks he is useless.

All three were responsible for the three most comically bad incidents of the match.

Sellar's Dawes-esque dropped chest mark, Pedersen's swatting at the ball instead of marking it, and Gillies' "rushed" behind.

Three players who would not get a game literally anywhere but here.

You have to question the recruiting department.

How is Gillies a better prospect than Pettard?

Sellar ordinary VFL player

Rodan finished

Byrnes camt get a senior game elsewhere

Its all backfiring and its only round one.

Im prepared to givethem two more weeks and thats it,

Jamar is gone - I dont know what he was doing for most of yesterday - rarely tapping to advantage that is for sure - at least Spencer has second efforts.

Gillies - he looked lost but so did our entire back half. When the ball is coming in every five minutes and mids and forwards have no opponents it cant all fall on a first gamer to take responsibility.

Watts - I just didnt get his game yesterday. Lets hang out away from my opponent and avoid the football and the contest.

Frawley - i just see worrying signs from this bloke. Anger, frustration and not wanting to be there.

Pederson - i think he will improve but I didnt see much preseason to warrant selection to be honest.

Nicholson and Bail - we just dont need more runners who are good around the 'tan but cant kick

Strauss - he is young but get him in the side - excellent decision maker

Dean Kent and Dean Terlich - both showed more in the preseason than half our list. Passion, disposal and effort. Should have been in the side and will be next week.

Jetta - showed a bit preseason so why no selection?

Rodan - i expected more from an experienced player

Nathan Jones - should be captain - was beaten yesterday but will bounce back.

Sellar - its clearly a confidence thing. he is our Chris Dawes if we didnt have a real one LOL. But if your not up to it, make way for someone who is.

McKenzie - do we need a tagger? How about run and spread?

Garland - comprehensively out of form at the moment.

Evans, Tynan, Fitzpatrick - give them a run. At this stage I cant see the problem with bloodying more youngsters.

I feel desperately sorry for Chippa. A player of his quality should be experiencing much better times than this garbage.

Frankly I wouldn't blame him for leaving now. I remember an interview with him several years ago where he spoke of just being "sick of losing". He looked angry and dejected THEN. I can only imagine what his mindset is NOW. For those who question his form, think about the time he's been here. Losing is a cancer that has consumed the club and he's been one of the worst hit. Without a major change, and fast, he should get out so he can actually enjoy the back end of his career.

Seller is the worst. He ha the right build tob imposing but is the opposite. Problem is he NEVER plucks pack marks or even contested marks, it's not in his skill set. And for a guy his size he must do this or this will be his last season as an afl footballer.

Stellar reflected perfectly what's wrong with us at the moment. We had created mid matches forward and he out bodied his opponent in the goal square and dropped the mark then later on the lead 40 metres out drops a bloody chest mark. How does a bloke high on preseason confidence make such basic errors??

Our team has a disease, just a losers disease. No body had the attitude either of you know what [censored] it, let's charge through and DO something, split a pack, hit some bodies. Just nothing.

Never thought I would say it but I want Joel McDonald in. At least he does that.

Gillies is a) young, B) shouldn't have to be taking first or second KPF's and c) was on the receiving end of 62 (count 'em) Inside 50's. Not saying he was great on Sunday, clearly he wasn't, but I wouldn't be writing him off on the basis of one game where the whole team underwhelmed and we were cut to ribbons in the mids.

Erm, what? He was recruited as a KPD. That's EXACTLY what he should be doing.

I agree! Port didn't even have a second KPD yesterday and killed us. Whoever they used were still too strong. Jasper Pittard is 70kg and ran around like he was 6'5 105kg and lightning quick.

Even if MacDonald has a few dodgy disposals at least he fits within the criteria as 'a hard guy to play against' and he does intercept the ball in the backline.

I think Kolt looks like he’s im

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
