Shame to let him go like most of the guys traded or delisted I wish them all the best at there new clubs or getting drafted . He was a handy player but I don't think he is right for the way footy is going ATM (I hope I'm wrong) he's just going to get killed in the one on one contested stuff and isn t really the best user under pressure. Love the guy and thank him for the service he gave to the club wish him all the best tho

You've made a good point there....strong bodies, strong contests. Sewell, Kennedy, Ablett, Swan...these guys are the templates.

To my mind, moving on Gysberts was the boldest of the swag of changes made by Neeld this off-season. High draft pick midfielder, talented and with just three years in the system, yet the coach clearly saw something he didn't like, something he felt didn't fit in with the ethos of the new Melbourne - physical presence and wortk ethic.

Jordon hadn't convinced FD after three years because of a philosophical shift in coaching. He hadn't been a failure (As neither Martin nor Morton had) but didn't fit the preferred type of player. Neeld has taken the club in a completely different direction to the one we were previously committed to for three years as the premiership template. Will the new approach work. It didn't the first year. It's an extreme approach to have topped up with good VFL players at the expense of young developing players. Pederson came virtually at the cost of Gysberts and Martin.(Martin was given away for nothing) In my mind Pederson has to be better than Martin, Fitzpatrick and Hogen to have justified giving up on Gysberts for his inclusion. He couldn't make it at North so he has to really step up with us. Neeld has taken an extreme direction that had better work by the end of three years, or we will be needing to clear out a dozen good VFL players and have a new hole where we gave up on developing players. Yes Gysberts has gone and their is a lot I like about several of the new young kids. But one question remains as a result of Gysberts going. Will Neelds extreme approach work?

Jordie Gys was a ball magnet and a fairly good tackler but didnt have the build to play AFL.

He had a chance to grow some arms and shoulders but he chose not to use the facilities available and so wasted everyones time last year .

Youth is wasted on the young .

I wish him luck at Norf .

1./He may not have been a failure but he wasn't a success, nor was Morton: Martin filled a role when needed.

2./ Do you really mean that Pedersen needs to better than all three you mentioned? That is a huge ask considering the wraps for Hogan. Hell, if he is better than all three, Norf have made a huge mistake and we will hopefully have made a killing (assuming that Hogan lives up to anything near his hype).

I still think this is the only mistake of the off season.

I found it ironic when on draft night Todd Viney said we drafted 25 y.o. Matt Jones at pick 52 because our midfield was all of a similar height (short!).

I would have thought that ONLY drafting kids, and expecting that to turn into a premiership was an "extreme approach". With the players we've brought in and moved out, we now have a list with an age distribution much more in keeping with that of most clubs.

I think it is much more about his work ethic with rehab and training. He was a good clearance player but couldn't or wouldn't run and spread from the contest, some say he was a ball magnet but this had more to do with a lack of respect shown by the opposition when they tightened up on him he struggled.

Happy for the old 'spurt of jizz' to do well at NMelb. He is not on our list, and not on my radar. If there was a decision that he wasn't getting us closer to a flag then he is better off elsewhere.

The fact is that in the Bailey years we recruited a lot of talented kids to play the sort of open footy that was in vogue 3 or 4 years ago. Perhaps because they had natural talent they hadn't developed the hunger you need to have today - but one way or another they were all given a chance and they didn't cut the mustard. You could say that we were tough on Cook - but no other club has given him a lifeline. Some are critical of the FD for letting these players go for next to nothing - but the fact is that no one else rated them. The mistake was in recruiting them in the first place - it was time to cut our losses

If we get a few injuries - we might miss Martin because of his adaptability - but I don't think he's going to come back and bite us. Gys is still young enough to make a good career for himself but the way we want to play he's too light to be a key inside workhorse and too slow to be a line-breaking outside runner.

Gys will be better off in a different environment - and we'll be better off moving forward without him
