Let me preface by saying I would go for best available. In saying this, our midfield clearly needs pace and skill more than it needs grunt IMO. The only young midfielders on the 2012 list who I have confidence in being long-term AFL footballers are Jones, Grimes, Trengove and Sylvia. Of this list, only Sylvia provides any real line breaking ability. (You could add Watts, Blease and Howe to this list, but I doubt any of them will become full time midfielders.)

Viney should also add a good inside presence, which lessens the requirement for other inside mids even more IMO.

Moreover, inside mids seem to be generally attainable with later picks. (Barlow, Sewell, Mitchell, Tuck, Scott Selwood and Kennedy spring to mind.)

Hopefully Toumpas is available with our pick and we take him. Otherwise I would even consider Menzel, despite the risks.

I don't remember where I read it, but I do remember hearing Viney speak about Toumpas... It went something like:

Q: Who has impressed you the most this year? Who would you want to play with?

JV: Jimmy Toumpas has really impressed me lately, i'd love to play with him.

Also worth noting that when Viney was officially awarded to us via the mini draft that Toumpas went out of his way to congratulation Viney on twitter, Viney then said "thanks mate your next".

So I think talk of Viney and Wines having a bromance is ridiculous.

For some reason, I think Wines will have a hunger similar to Ben Cousins, but a brute toughness like Dustin Martin.

But on the other hand, Toumpas reminds me of Darren Jarmen.

I say Toumpas. I know that everyone loves the thought of Wines and Viney working as a double-act in the middle and monstering teams, but Toumpas has a huge reputation as a match-winner with genuine skill and pace. He may not be as hard as Wines, but he isn't soft (like other no. 4s) and I think he has Wines covered in pretty much every other aspect.

I should add, I am one of those salivating at the thought of Wines/Viney in the middle in a few years.

What's the ratio of outside to inside mids in a team anyway? Does such a thing exist? Surely the mix of a team is directly reflective of a coaches game plan and overall strategy. When looking back on Baileys tenure the general sentiment is that the team was built from drafting fleet-footed offensive players. Now after one season from Neeld, supporters are concerned about having too many inside, contested types.

Neeld has spoken of his preference of grunt. Whether he has the right mix for his next phase of the clubs strategy by including another grunt midfielder following Viney or if now is the right time for a Toumpas who knows.

I've been leaning towards Wines for the last few months but with the latest rumours suggesting GWS passing on him it makes the decision that much harder.

Does Wines have capacity to play outside?

Does Toumpas have the capacity to play inside crash and bash?

Tough decision but at least this time around I have total faith in the recruiters to make the right call.

Firstly, for the poster that asked whether Toumpas was soft, or not the answer is no. Don't you guys have Foxtel ? Also, he captained SA at the championships. You don't make a soft player your state captain - unless your name is Bryce Gibbs. OK forget that last bit.

McQueen: I'm very happy to have a quality big bodied inside mid at the club, but I'd prefer Toumpas purely because he's a better player.

I still think wines. I think as he is already a really good tough, contested ball winner that puts him ahead. My reason being that i think it would be easier to teach a player to get in the right positions for uncontested footy than to teach them the other side of it. wines could have both easier than toumpas could and i think Toumpas may be solely an outside player. I may be making up a whole heap of gobley [censored] though!
