Clint Bartram retires

Featured Replies

so sad, so unfair. I thought he was starting to come good before his injury, there was a patch in late 2010 where he really was playing quality back pocket footy that reminded me of the great Matthew Whelan. Poor bloke lost his old man when he was about 19 too, hard luck mate. Thanks for your efforts.

youd almost retire #3 for a year out of respect

edit

not almost....should !!

This is a tough time for him, but I'm sure he will come out of it well! We will miss his hardness and determination! I got 27 on my away jumper last season and 3 on my home jumper, I have given up on getting new numbers on the jumpers I buy this season.

Hope the club keep him involved at some capacity. He was in yhe leadership group for a reason.

Thanks Clint.

Best to call it a day now, there is life after footy.

A gutsy little player, all the best for your future ambitions.

Best of luck in whatever you choose to do Clint. I remember when his father passed and he still decided to play. Gutsy effort. You gave your all for the jumper, and you'll always have my respect.

Pity Jon Ralph isn't retiring too. Brock McLean jeeeeez!

All the best Barty. was 100% effort all the way.

Wasn't in our best 22, but you can sure as hell rely on the fact he'd have been working his ass off to get back in, if it wasn't for his knee.

If only some other players on our list had his tenacity and courage.

I reckon he was easily one of the first picked each week when fit !!

Hope we keep Barty around the club.

Maybe as a mentor for some of the younger guys.

Would be great seeing him instilling some of his G&D into someone like Barry.

Sad time player who got the absolute best out of himself and gave everything for this club that he had. Hope he is not lost to the AFL or the club!

Best of luck Barty in your life after being an AFL player and thank you very much for your efforts whilst a Demon!

His hardness won me over in the end, I'd pick him despite disposal queries because he'd run through a wall to get the ball and tackled like everyone should.

Good luck, you deserve some.

So thats a vacant spot in the leadership group.

But its sad that at just 24 his career has ended.I hope that the kids that get drafted next week realise that footy might not be forever. But I can see why he retired. If his knees are like this at 24 what will they be like when he is in his 40's or 50s. Good luck with your future Clint.

Sad news.

Champion bloke and a solid, tireless worker on the field who always thought utmost of the team principles and considered only how he could meet them.

Hope he sticks around the club - his advice to players coming through would be valuable.

Best of luck for the future, Barts.

It came as a surprise to me that he is only 24 as well. Much like Nathan Jones, he was burned in to my mind as one of our "seniors" when he's still just a baby really. He should rightfully be looking to hit career best form in the next few years, not calling it quits. Such a shame.

I agree he was improving each game and if he continued he would be in our best 22 for sure

The footy gods can be fickle hey? I hope he impresses upon his younger team-mates the need to grasp their chance while they can get it, 'cos it can be over in the blink of an eye.

Really really devastating news.

He must be gutted. From personal experience there is nothing worse than having an injury that won't go away. Can't imagine how it must feel to a young athlete who was making strides in his career.

His leadership, his hardness and his courage will be sorely missed.

All the very best of luck Barts!

Remember him in his first game, it was the NAB cup or whatever it was called back then. We had a Fantasy Footy Comp. at work, and I chose him as my tackler. Got laughed at, but I laughed last. Played all games for 80+ tackles.

Thanks Jaded... youve well reminded me how remiss its been of many of us to overlook how he might feel. yes i reckon thats got to be one hard shitty decision to make. And he would be gutted. Its not about us. lets let it be about him. Cruelled...poor bugger :(

Anyone who has a crack like Barty did, has my respect. Sad to see you go cob, good luck in your next phase and im sure you will succeed...

Probably like mine. And it aint good. I spoke to him at the B & F and told him I had my fingers crossed for him because if it worked I was going to try it for a similiar issue. He didn't look very confident of a positive outcome. What a career he had for a pick 60. In his first season played all 22 H & A games and did his knee in round 22 which meant he missed the finals. Wouldn't think too many pick 60's had a debut season like his.

Hate to see anyone not get a full crack at a footy career because of injury, it's very unfair. Especially when it is someone who had a dip and never gave anything less than 100% for the MFC. I know he wouldn't read this thread, but I hope he knows that the MFC faithful are very thankful for his efforts and he isn't lost to the club. Good luck with everything Barts.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREGAME: West Coast

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
