Getting Smashed on Trade Radio

Featured Replies

I was happy with our performance until today. Giving up Gysberts and especially Morton for SFA is disappointing.

Gys and Cale were contracted for 2013. The real value in the trade is not simply what we received for them, but what we save by not having to pay them next year, as well as the space Mortons departure opens up on our list.

In the grand scheme of things I give us a pass mark. We had very clear intentions going into the trade period to get players that would make some on the list redundant. Perhaps the biggest mistake we made was not playing our cards closer to our chest, we made our intentions and targets so obvious that other teams were able to make us pay overs for them.

The big win (despite what others may say) is definitely the Dawes deal, we have got a proven player who comes into fill a role straight away. If both he and Clark play most of the season it will put us in a very good position to kick winning scores.

Overall I'm happy with what we've done, the commentators and "experts" can have their opinion but I expect good improvement in 2013.

Jeez theres some good numbers to be handed out arent there?

Dom Barry #33 or if Old Dee allows it, maybe #7?!

Bless you my son!

Heard that. I don't even know what he means...

neither does he !!

Like who?

In any case, how do you do a trade without letting your intentions known? "Hi, just calling to let you know that we're definitely not interested in Cameron Pederson".

And not to mention, moving on 2 players who we otherwise couldn't delist.

Drafting and trading can't be separated from list management. It's not possible to bring in everyone you'd like, and keep everyone you want, especially in the case of project players.

Trade Radio are rating the team's performances througout the Trade period. Not sure what people think, or how would score us. Terry Wallace has given us a 'C', However Damian Barret has rated as an 'e'.

Is this fair you think?

I wouldn't say an e but c- would be more like it, we got hasbeens in and let some good players go, Gysberts is the one whose going to burn us and if he does l'll be down to Neeld and burn my membership in front of his face

This is not intended to be the team that will win a flag. This is laying the foundations upon which to build long term success. We need to have some vision and look past next year.

I'm quite aware of this. But drafting in talented kids who have been subsequently unlucky with injury then dismissing them before they have a real chance under the new system is a poor sign in my opinion. With the exception of Dom Barry who is basically a set of steak knives, Neeld appears to have little time for players who will need physical development. I just don't want to see the Dean Bailey pendulum swing too far back the other way.

Obviously Gysberts, Morton, and Martin were all traded for nothing else but a spot on the list. On the face of it, it is hard to fathom that David Rodan will provide anymore than any of these 3, not to even mention the age of the likes of Gysberts and scope for improvement. I support the FD as they know these guys far better than any of us, but I still find this a bit of a head scratcher.

You're an idiot.

I'm not in favor of the Gysberts trade, but is a membership card actually flammable? It would be mildly embarrassing if you went on a tirade in front of Neeld and then tried to light up your membership only for it to fail to ignite.

No matter what would've done there will always be someone who thinks we've made the wrong choices. However, it's their opinion and we can choose for ourselves whether we agree or not.

I'm happy this years trade period, we've brought in players who have had plenty of experience (Rodan, Byrnes, Dawes). Whether they play 5 games or all 22 is irrelevant. It's the experience they bring to the group that's important.

Youngsters Viney and Hogan should be welcome inclusions for our team and we still have pick 4 to land another young gun.

Losing players like Martin, Rivers and Gysberts was disappointing but I wish them luck and success with their future endeavours (unless they play against Melbourne!)

Bring on 2013!!!

Anyone who says that it is not a pass, i am truely shocked!

We have filled so many holes during this trade period and there is still the draft to come and the PSD. We have picked up 3 strong fwds (Dawes, pedersen, Hogan), 3 speedy players (brynes, Rodan, barry) and a highly rated mid (viney) and we have gotten rid of a a few players that seemed to be pushed out as they no longer fitted with where we're going or are not performing (gysberts, Morton, Martin). With pick 4 we can address our midfield with a highly probable 10 year+ player and we can pick up others in the national and PS draft. I cannot get my head around how people can grade our F/A and trade period as a fail!?!?

Barret said we shouldve kept all out high draft picks, pick young kids and trust in them to get the job done. Well Im sick of waiting another 6 years for our youngstars to develop so this trading period IMO has been great. We have enough kids on our list dont need another 7-8 17/18year olds running around.

Now just sit back and wait for round one to come. Go DEES!

I get the feeling that if the Swans traded Pederson, Dawes and Rodan into their club, they would be applauded for their moneyball decisions

Hogan should get 5 IMO, pick 4 can have 10, and J Viney can have RDB's 31

Big CARL, Peter Moore, Danny Hughes & Marcus Seecamp, must have a grin from ear to ear. 10 is free again.

It must be rejuvenated with a vigorous player.

The only "high" draft pick we gave away in essence was 13. Which effectively netted us Dawes and Barry.

Is that a loss? At this point in time probably, but who knows? We'll have to wait and see.

I agree with demon jack

You're alot chirpier than I expected. Your man crush is gonesky. Suddenly he's "no longer fitting where we're going or not performing".

As I've said elsewhere, I'm torn on this trade period. We got in some very good players, in particular in terms of their experience playing in finals (would've liked Ray for this too), but we got absolutely screwed in trades all the way through. I honestly don't know what to think about it. Fortunately I'll get an answer to that problem by this time next year.

I like your thinking

Totally agree with your observation 46. I listened to David King one morning on SEN calling for the club to sack Neeld and cut our losses. A few weeks later they had MN on the program and DK asked just some lame questions about how tough it must be to be an AFL coach. Not one probing question. It was quite pathetic.

King was also complaining about Neeld not turning over the list, now he complains that he is turning over the list. Go figure.

If Hogan is a star, this year's trade period increases to an A, if he isn't, then we will drop to a C.

I like your post except for this part.

The way I see it, we got Hogan for pick 13. I wouldn't drop my rating down 3 cogs if pick 13 didn't become a star - if he did, on the other hand...

Barret is a joke of a journo. The guy who does the cricket scores in my local Leader paper has much more credit than this [censored].

I always try and see the bright side of things even if it involves my favourite player leaving :( while i would've like to get more for him (pick 33) i'm not devastated, we can still get a player with 'potential' with pick 54 (or whatever it is), and given this is meant to be a deep draft that is more likely. i do feel though we will regret trading him but we can never keep every player.

RobbieF,

Feeling flat.

so be it. Perhaps retiring your cut sow whinging might help? Or get a room with Jaded? Cant say I care. Just can't be pleased & please spare me a response.

DA pretty much sums it up for mine,

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
