Matthews Collins & Matt Whelan

New favourite is D Nicholson. Should be promoted to senior list next year

I like Nicholson as well.

He just has to give a bit more to stay in the side.

Icke was 184 cm which is about 6' 1 "

I stand corrected -still a shortarse for a CHB.

Who also cant forget Tiger Croswell giving the StKilda young gun Simon O'Donnell a decent bath at CHB ?

Agree with the OP, I was a huge fan of Peter Walsh. I haven't been around long enough to have seen some of the names mentioned in this thread, but from who I've seen I love(d) watching Carroll, Ingerson, Frawley...there's a lot of good ones to pick from.

Tassie Johnson

Gary Hardeman

Don Williams

Laurie Fowler

Doc Roet

Trevor Rollinson

Alan Johnson

You're talking my language and era Sdemons, but I'm not sure Trevor Rollinson would make my list. I would probably replace him with Johnny Beckwith. Very hard to go past Gary Hardeman for number one billing imo: 200 odd games, a regular in the Big V, and consistently polled well in Brownlows. Small and lightly framed for a KPP but rarely beaten. CHB in Melbourne Team of the Century.

I had Steven Smiths number on my Duffell coat.

Alan Johnsons number on my Jumper.

We couldn't all be Robbie Flower.

Liked the way Grinter went about his business.

I should have put chip in too.

AJ was good in his day wasnt he.I can only just remember him.

I didnt rate Carrol much but his tackle on the Rockape Gehrig in the final was an absolute ripper!

hand out raymonds BIFFEN

1. G Hardeman

2. L Fowler

3. A Johnson

Special Mentions to B Lovett and S Wight.

Gary Hardeman.

Kicks either foot equally, he wouldn't know which was his natural.

Beautiful reader of the play, and could play forward equally as well.

Brett Lovett

The world was a better place with the ball in his hands. Even though he wasn't particularly quick he could still find a way out when surrounded by opposition players. He had that extra time thing the really good ones have. Tough too

In no particular order:

Danny Hughes

Sean White

Matty Whelan

Marcus Seecamp (tried to chat up my girlfriend (now wife) at a function - woohoo!)

Nathan Brown - my player sponsor, ripping bloke, one of the best

Gary Hardeman , Brett Lovett , Laurie Fowler

I have a soft spot for big backman - If I was a male and played footy, thats where I would want to play.

In no particular order I loved watching Nathan Carrol, Rod Grinter, Sean Wight and Matty Whelan. I also enjoyed watching James Frawley in 2011 - last year was not his greatest year but he is still young.

You hit it on the head jane, the backline is the best spot to play other than FF. Why...? Because you get to beat up on & clip behind the ear of the pretty boy forwards!

Thats why I like Sean Wight so much...not only came from Ireland..was also half scot I think and started belting the likes of Dunstall,Ablett and Salmon everytime they went near the ball!

Wight was an absolute gun!

The Wrecker by a street.

If a medal is to be struck it has to be called the Crompton ......... for that one moment in September.

Nothing like humble pies!!

Sean White (proof that you could poke God in the eye), Walsh and Wheelan as equal seconds, Lovett also pretty bloody good.

Russell "Rhino" Richards - only played 80 odd games and left the game at age 25 - was a ripper with great dash of the half back flank and you never knew where the ball was going to go

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
