I’m not a noted thread starter (for obvious reasons some will say). However, the more I read and follow “Demonland” I have to ask the question about the connection between lunacy and supporting the Melbourne Football Club.

I am 60 years old so I can remember the glory day of Neil Crompton - there is some excuse for me. But what attracts young supporters? We have basically had shite since ‘64.

Since I’ve joined demonland I’ve participated in or observed some wonderfully vitriolic debate. I continually ask myself how can such diverse individuals support the same club?

Current threads, for example, speculate about what position to play players we haven’t even signed yet. Or, where players will end up who haven’t been delisted yet.

It’s crazy stuff to have such passionate supporters of one the worst performed clubs in living memory. Our membership has increased in recent years. Why do we do it?

What makes you a Melbourne supporter? (Or is that Melbourne Tragic?) Are we different to those who support " successful" clubs?

I Am 24 and have followed for 10 years. I like the colors, simple as that

Keep in mind, for all our bad seasons we have had some success.

We have played in Grand Finals twice in the last 20 years or so and obviously had some successful seasons surrounding those appearances where we played in finals series and had some good wins. And even though many would say otherwise we have had some superstars, Jimmy for one. For some people, that's all it takes to catch their eye.

As for me, my family are longtime supporters of this club, so there was no other choice. The MFC is part of my identity.

My Dad gave me 2 choices. I gave my kids the same choice. Follow the Dee's or go live in a dumpster. There are times I wish I had have picked the dumpster

My Dad bred it into me and my two brothers, we now have our own families and they dont have a choice either!

I started in 1947 and took up MFC because they were at the bottom of the ladder.

It was a combination of the jumper. the demons moniker and the fact that they had a guy who they called the ox and another called the wizard. (nicknames are cool to kids)

I think we also have the most fickle supporters out of anyother club.

The Wizard was also Farmer. So we had the farmer and his ox. Please tell me that helped as it will support my thesis that we are all nuts.

My Dad...i almost dumped them when the Royal Blue 80's jumper was in...I hate that jumper, it's purpose still alludes me.

But i stuck it out....and will be buried with the scarf i bought Round 1 1987..

I come from Hawthorn supporting parents. My Father thought he did the right thing by encouraging his children, who were going to be MCC members, to support Melbourne, the powerhouse club at the time.

I've seen no success and missed out on 9 flags.

Was brought up in a Collingwood recruiting zone, just next to the Essendon zone. All things considered, I think I made the correct choice.

Ah; it is that time of year again isn't it. Well I started following the Dees because that is what my family did - 3 generations or more! My Mother was rabid about them..She used to hang around with Dougie Heywood and Jackie Muller. It was entrenched and now there is no other option. My 8 year old is now hooked as well so I guess I have passed it on to the next generation. I tell him what I tell myself which is that one day we will be successful and to have stuck with them through the hard times will make the good times all the sweeter.

(mind you, my Mother lived through 10 premierships!)

It's a good thing you're all about the journey.

No idea why I support the MFC, but for whatever reason I have a much bigger connection with Melbourne than I do any other club, even in sports I prefer such as soccer. I think it is the fact I feel like the club actually need me, which is obviously untrue as they would survive without me, but being a member and chipping in a bit of cash here and there, I actually feel like I am a bigger part of the club than I am of any soccer team I support.

Mum a mad Dees supporter.

Next older brother followed Dees until 1974 when we got beaten bad and he jumped to the filth. Remains unforgiven and on the outer.

I loved Greg Wells and Stan Alves, and cried when Hardeman lost the Brownlow to one of the softest players of all time - Keith Greig. I was emotionally hooked from that day on.

What kept me going during the 70's? One thing: Robert Flower.

What keeps me going now? I have absolutely no idea. But I remain red and blue through and through.

if you smack a dog every time it comes near you eventually the dog will stop coming back. Dogs are so much smarter than us Melbourne supporters
