2012 Player Review - # 26 Dan Nicholson (R)

Recommended Posts

After training with the mids all summer and playing in the midfield at VFL level, Daniel was thrown down back in Round Nine against Carlton, and found his niche within the team. He is a very good one on one player, and has learned how to use his speed and endurance to his advantage. He had a small setback with a broken jaw against North Melbourne, and showed great determination and courage to want to play as soon as possible after that. Daniel offers something different to the team, and will benefit from a solid amount of AFL football - the amount of games he played in the second half of the year will benefit him going into his third pre-season. - Jade Rawlings (back line coach) melbournefc.com.au

I like him apart from when he appeared to shirk the contest twice in one match this year.

His kicking is a bit in hope.

Apart from these things he has some good pace .

He deserves another year to atone for his shirks.

If he does it ever again I will be off him.

At times he was an excitement machine, backing himself and taking them on. I like his self belief. He can take a contested mark, something we haven't seen a lot of, and he seems to be courageous (I don't recall seeing him shirk). Has developed nicely since drafted. I'm seeing plenty of upside in this rough diamond.

One thing about poor disposal and decision-making is that there is often an element of confidence in one's teammates involved as part of the reason. In a poor team, mistakes happen more often and even the best of players make them. Not saying that his disposal is perfect, but I'd like to think that as the team gets stronger overall, Nicho will improve in this area.

Love the mix of explosive pace and endurance in Nicho. Has a lot wrong with his game but what he does bring is excellent. Was very impressive in our win over Essendon in rd 10, and if he can bring that into his game more often next year then he'll be a walk-up starter and an important part of our team's climb up the ladder.

So many fist pumping moments with Nicho around.

I really like Nicho. Pace to burn, can run all day and while his kicking may miss targets a bit, it's penetrating and he has a really good technique. I think his turnovers are down to pressure.

I mean, look at this:

How many of our players can do that? Sylvia, Blease.......hopefully Taggert soon.

Exactly. Note the scoreline at the time?

Once the team has more class and experience, the fringe players will look like worldbeaters. It's all about confidence.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
