WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JESSE HOGAN

Featured Replies

Demonland got their man. We have been "asking" for a big tall fwd from this trade/drfta period and from the Under 18 champs, he was the standout.

Jesse Hogan is a big forward in the Neitz or Schwartz mould. Has the size and strength to build on.

I agree we should not put any pressure on the kid. Still Jumper #31 is free, #18 available and most likely #6 ...I think number 18 sits well (IMO)

I think Jack Viney for jumper no. 1 ... next to Jonesy !!!!!

How some have soured on this deal to the extent they don't think we should have been in the MD at all.

What crap.

This kid is going to be a star and I don't care that 13 turned into 20 - we would have got Dawes with the pick anyway.

We need stars and the kid above will be just that.

Can we afford to feed him?

He'll probably be about 80kg when he debuts.

Go and put $100 on Hogan for the 2014 rising star.

Monty.

Dun Deel .

oops that's the Derby.

Have you heard what family he will be boarding with?

Wouldn't be the Vineys would it?

You mean Hogan will end up looking like this ?

Likely story.

Not a flattering photo that one. In fairness though, it was a stiff breeze.

Am I correct in thinking he is eligible for NAB cup matches next year?

He should be, O'Meara was for the Suns so I assume the same rules apply.

Am I correct in thinking he is eligible for NAB cup matches next year?

Required a special ruling from the AFL to allow O'Meara and Crouch the ability to play NAB Cup/Challenge.

You'd assume we'd be afforded the same ruling.

Stupid these kids can't play next year. Hogan has finished school. They're only 4 months younger than the others

Will be 18 by time season starts and are allowed to train with club all year and play with men in vfl.

If they're up to it let them play

Why does the age rule apply? Is it some kind of duty of care thing to do with minors getting injured or being employed on a fulltime basis?

If that was the case he would be in the draft and we may not have got him anyhow.

I'm hoping to look back in 4 years time and thinking how lucky we were to get him for pick 13.

Hogan, Clark and Dawes...The Triple Towers

If that was the case he would be in the draft and we may not have got him anyhow.

Know all that, but it just seems to me to be cruel with a guy like hogan who has to cool his heels for 12 months when he may be good enough to go

He'll be 18 and Watson was playing at 16

Know it isn't going to change but just annoying

From The Lions Share on AFL site- a great read as a whole to get insight and perspective and a fair link with Melbourne trades but this excerpt is enough to give even the most pessimistic Demon a little glimmer for 2014-

The key forward

Jesse Hogan

Prior to the trade period we had determined that if we could not bring Tippett into the club, we would seriously pursue Jesse Hogan via the 17-year-old mini draft.

Jesse, who played centre half-forward for Claremont under 18’s and Western Australia, was identified by our WA scouts very early in the year and we followed him closely throughout, both before and after the Under 18 championships.

We had met with and interviewed Jesse in WA and through our discussions he had become quite happy with the idea of coming to Brisbane next year and learning his craft under the tutelage of Jonathan Brown.

We had offered our pick No.8 to GWS prior to the trade period in order to keep us in the race. In fact we were growing quietly confident that we may well land Jesse as we had made the most prominent bid in the early stages.

However, when Jack Viney was not bid on in the father/son bidding process, we felt that hurt our prospects as it left Melbourne with picks three and four to trump us. We understood that the Bulldogs preferred Jack Martin, while Port Adelaide had expressed no interest in Jesse.

Once Jesse tested so well at the NAB AFL Draft Combine in the shuttle run we knew we were likely to be trumped. In anticipation of that we offered pick 8 and 24 - but the next day Jesse ran an exceptional 3km time trial for a boy of his size.

While his football talent had been clear to us, the combine emphasised his work rate and determination. That display certainly seemed to be enough to prompt Melbourne to offer their pick three and 13 (which later became 14) and our hopes of bringing Jesse to Brisbane were dashed. Nevertheless we wish him well in his AFL career.

Isn't this banned...draft tampering?

???

It's a trade proposition.

How so draft tampering?

Isn't this banned...draft tampering?

We did it. So believe what you want.

Isn't this banned...draft tampering?

Nah but saying we wont draft player x if you offer us pick y is.

Isn't this banned...draft tampering?

Unlike the Tippet saga this was probably not on paper on a contract

Hogan finished on 24 possessions, 10 marks, 19 kicks and 4 goals, plus 136 DT points.

As for not having the same physical advantage at AFL level ? He's not a slow bullocking key forward that is rag dolling skinny kids. He's a big agile aggressive key forward with excellent pace, who can also go into the midfield. His traits translate anywhere.

He's a gun and we must get him. Whatever it takes.

Has anyone ever said that you're a very smart man ?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
