I hear from someone that he tends to get himself in the right position but exploits his size.

Sounds like a footballer.

I'm sick of hearing oh he may just be good because he's big among kids. We got Cook thinking he would develop and he hasn't. Just go for the here and now, Hogan's big now so get him. No point hoping a skinny kid gets bigger.

Lets not analyse our options.

Lets just pick the kids from biggest to smallest in the draft in descending order.

Yep and he will already have the confidence in his body, which you'd think would take less time to project to senior footy than someone with a body like Cook.

That is why I would be tempted to try and do a deal to get both picks. If we gave pick 4 and a player or two with one being a ruckman, that could get the deal done. Lets say we could steer Martin or Spencer to GWS and say Petterd or Bate or both. GWS need some hard bodies and most importantly need a ruckman even more so if Giles walks. If this sort of deal eventuated, we would have to be patient, as we would have two potential guns coming in a year to add to that year's first round pick. We could still get Toumpas or Grundy at 3, someone good at 13 and JV later. Pick 13 and a player could still be used to deal with GC for some of their mids. We also have salary cap room to target FA's. We would be in a strong position to really change the list.

Redleg that's a fare scinario for all involved when the afl set up this mini draft system it was to help gws recruit mature players not draft picks. I'm a big fan of Martin and hogan would certainly be a bonus if he comes on as a big pack marking forward. As you pointed out we would still have two first round draft picks in a strong draft plus the best inside mid in viney could well be a great outcome especially if (and thats a very big if because we are the worst development club in thr league by a country mile right now) we can develop 2 potential top 5 draft picks of which we are lacking in classy mid and strong kpf we will be huge winners

He's absolutely destroying it. 16 disposals, 8 marks and 2 goals after 7 minutes of the third quarter.

EDIT: I can't keep up! 20 disposals, 9 marks and 3 goals.

I recall stating to people before both Hurley and Darling were drafted, that they were unlikely to succeed at AFL level because they used their bigger bodies to monster kids, and wouldn't be able to do the same against men.

How wrong I was on both counts.

A player like Josh Toy is an EXCEPTION to the rule.

Get Hogan.

His big body won't be as much of a problem, ie. dominating against the smaller kids then struggling in the big league. If we did draft him, he would have an entire year to build up even bigger, play against bigger bodies in the VFL, as well as training against some AFL seasoned bodies at the Dees training throughout the year (in particular Frawley).

Come the start of 2014 (if we were to get him) he would be so far ahead of where he would be if he was taken in the 2013 draft, or compared to a Watts/Cook type developing KPF.

I'd love him at the Dees, but i would only give up pick #4 for him, as no other team would beat that for the #2 MD pick.

People need to remember you trade for the pick number in the MD not the player. If we seriously want him we need to obtain pick 1 in the MD. How could you be sure that if GC or another club obtained pick 1 that they would not use it on Hogan instead of Martin?

I am looking at Hogan's stats in the WAFL game and am drooling at the thought of this kid being a dee.

Posted

Martin or Josh Kelly wouldn't be so much of a loss.

But point taken.

According to rumour, GWS want picks, while GC have enough decent KPP prospects so would be aiming for a mid.

I doubt any other team will come up with a deal that GWS would prefer to pick 3 or 4.

Hogan finished on 24 possessions, 10 marks, 19 kicks and 4 goals, plus 136 DT points.

As for not having the same physical advantage at AFL level ? He's not a slow bullocking key forward that is rag dolling skinny kids. He's a big agile aggressive key forward with excellent pace, who can also go into the midfield. His traits translate anywhere.

He's a gun and we must get him. Whatever it takes.

Shame about Claremont losing. Regardless, if that's the last we see of Hogan on the field this year, then he's left on a very strong note.

I thought you were trading a pick for the right to select a specific player

Viney,Clarke,Hogan and Jones. We will have some hard as nails players very soon.

Nah you trade for pick 1 or pick 2 then its is a "draft" of 2 picks

but generally it is known who will pick who, or even pick 1 will be picked before pick 2 is basically sold

Say we were to trade for MD pick 2 - pick 1 will probably be Jack Martin but if Hogan is taken there I think we will end up pretty happy with Martin, he is an absolute jet.

Especially when we only pay the price for pick 2 either of them will be great value

Because Jack Martin is the clear #1 choice this year, just like O'Meara was last year, but we need another bullocking KPF as highlighted by Mitch going down this season.

Posted

I'd take Hogan over martin. We need Hogan and a player like him doesn't come around that often. Martin is very good but if we did take him we would have to pick up another KPP and hope they fill out and develop.

I really like Martin, but give me a dominant 10 year key CHF over any skillful mid.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
