I always felt we could get viney in teh 2nd round but im pretty certain GC will swap their 1st pick for the u17. this gives GWS the first 2 picks. Whitfield and then the possibility of bidding for viney without the risk of losing their 1st round draft pick should we call their bluff. GC will outbid us for Martin(u17) if they want to.

GWS wouldn't get that pick until AFTER the F/S bidding process, so when they walk in to that bidding room, they (GWS) will only have pick 1, and the others (GC) will still have pick 2. Unless they organise a special deal before hand, which I'm again doubtful.

And the other thing, why would GC give up Pick 2, to try and pick up a 17 year old who may be rated between 3-6 in a "normal" draft? They gave up pick 4 for O'Meara, with the massive difference being that O'Meara was considered a potential number 1 pick in a standard draft. The fact that they got him a year earlier and for pick 4 was, in their view, a very good outcome.

As has been said many times in the various threads, our first pick, pick 3, is a long way where we expected it to be, especially back when we convinced Viney to commit to us.

How many games has Josh Fraser played this year as compared to Dean Brogan?

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see GC swap pick 2 to GWS for Martin, given the Suns have Jaeger O'Meara to come on to their list next year, and they have to get rid of 2(?) plus the usual three players from their list.

In saying that, it may be a game of 'who blinks first' between MFC and GWS, as Whitfield + Grundy is a combination that will have the management at GWS requiring a change of pants.

A lot of people seem to think that GC will go around again in the mini-draft. I am not totally convinced that they will, There would be a fair amount of pressure on Guy McKenna to get some results in this third year, so deferring a quality player by on trading pick 2 seems a little unlikely to me. (Also need to bear in mind they need to reduce the numbers on their list further too.)

Also I wonder if GWS might use a slightly different approach themselves with regards to the mini draft and perhaps look at trying to getting a package with a mature player in from another club in return for a pick in the mini draft. I am not sure if they will try the same tactic they did this year with Junior, Power and Brogan....

Anyway, just a thought I had...

Would take VIney ahead of all of them.

Viney is an animal that will impact every contest he is at and will have the oppositon living in fear. He will rarely lose a contest and would die for his team mates. To top it off he has very good footskills and is a born leader.

Hes the kind of player the MFC have not had for 15+ years. Reminds me of a mix between Sam Mitchell,/Joel Selwood mixed with the power and aggresson of Byron Pickett/Karmicheal Hunt.

Absolute no brainer at pick 3, but heres hoping we can get him in the 2nd round. What a steal that would be.

Only if GWS or GC rate him as a 'genuine' top 2 selection. Under the current rules they're within their rights to bid for him, and land him with pick 1 or 2 if we don't come to the table..

The general impression i'm getting, is that GWS and GC do not rate him at the position, but are determined to push us to spend our first pick, because they rate him top 10, and us as a club....as long term rivals.

It's utterly stupid, and I hope we stick to our guns and only spend what we think he's worth. If there\'s a higher rated player available....then take him.

But being made to slightly overpay for a talent like Viney doesn't make me feel pushed around.

For a short kid, he will make me walk taller as an MFC supporter from 2013 onwards.

I've seen and read enough about Jack Viney these past twelve months to know that he is exactly the type of player and young man that we need.

We know what he can do on the football field. We know he is hard at it and takes no prisoners.

We know exactly what we are going to get which is not what has happened in past years when we hoped we knew what we were getting.

How many of our early draft selections in the past five or six years have lived up to the expectations we had for them?

I'd hate to see us pick up another player who ends up not performing to our level of expectation and then get doubly shafted by seeing Jack Viney perform wonders at another club.

We must use our first pick on him if this is what is required to get him.

These threads tend to annoy me because people keep getting the basics wrong.

We cant use PICK 4 on a father son because its a compo pick for Scully. Ive probably posted that about nine times now. So its either pick 3 or its second round for Viney.

We WILL take Viney at pick 3 if we have to! I know this for a fact. We WILL take VIney because he is a manchild that is ready to play now, because we have invested time in him and because - unlike all the other top players in the draft - he is emotionally and genetically invested in the club already.

This is a young bloke who has never played an AFL game but who loves the club and is carving it up in the VFL with more disposals than most of the AFL players current languishing them. He is ready to play like Daniel Rich was.

But we DONT WANT to use pick 3 on Viney unless we have to so we are trying to bluff. We are also very interested in Toumpas. Toumpas

Toumpas and Grundy look good but unlike the other players in the top rounds Viney has already played against players of AFL standard and he has played solidly at that level. At Casey he looks better than Scully does now.

If we lost Viney (which I know wont happen) for some potential first rounder who fails we will be the laughing stock of the AFL.

Gold Coast wont bid for Viney and Bluey recently said that more draft picks wont help his club - he wants seasoned and experienced players. GWS is the only problem with their pick 1 but if hypothetically some sort of deal could be made (although officially no go - but in a way GWS nominating Viney is a type of draft tampering) we could walk out with Toumpas at pick 3, Grundy or O'Rourke as our first compo at pick 4 and then trade our other compo with Stef Martin to GC for Caddy and use our second round to pick up Viney. best case scenario, but I would shed zero tears if we have to use pick 3 on Viney because he is ahead of most in the draft.

Notice how MFC have been barely mentioning Viney's stats at Casey? Trying to keep it quiet trust me.

Both teams have a heap of good young midfielders already at there clubs, why would they want another one for?
