Lucas Cook, Jack Fitzpatrick etc

You are suggesting Cook is going to be a NR!

Gee A big ask.

Not sure Nick was every as skinny as Cook.

It was meant to refer to playing style as much as physical stature...

Its the sledgehammer vs rapier argument...be nice if there was room for both now that green is gone and watts seems to be thriving down back

Ok rolly

I will now probably dream tonight that Cook turns into a NR.

Cannot get it out of my mind

Well if gysberts is going to turn into our jobe watson then why not...all we have until march next year is dreams

Not sure that March is the cut off date rolly.

Got a feeling we will need to be satisfied with dreams for a little longer than that.

Gysberts has shown a he's a smart inside footballer, albeit unfit with poor disposal which is similar to Watson starting out. Cook has never shown the same courage in aerial contests or gut running capability as Riewoldt. If he had, I'm sure he would've debuted in a poor side screaming out for a CHF. I don't see the comparison.

We all hope that all of our players become stars - the Gysberts comparison to Watson may be very blue sky but it's presently far more chance of happening than Cook becoming Riewoldt.

Have no confidence that Cook will play more than a handful of games at senior level let alone Fitzpatrick who could clog a list for years.

I just cannot believe that we passed over Darling who could've played close to 50 games for us already and was exactly what we need (a big bodied forward with some mongrel) and chose another project player after taking Watts at pick one 2 years before and taking Gawn & Fitzpatrick (2 more project players with injuries) in 2009.

As for Gysberts, I do like him and will give him time due to injuries but was surprised we took him at the time instead of Talia who is cementing a KPD role at the Crows.

What gets me is these bozos get paid good money to do something that I could do from my couch with an internet connection with more success. Do they really do that much besides watching the u18's championships and a few odd junior games here and there? It seems they've tried to outsmart themselves to make their positions relevant but have only succeeded in making themselves look stupid. That list earlier in the thread of our failed KPF selections makes me sick.

Rather than prolong the pain let's just delist him and reload for next year. I'm betting the club could pick up a player in the top 80 that has as much chance of becoming a player as Cook.

Jack Darling says Hi Melbourne you suckers!!

Quality post. Thanks for your thoughtful insight.

As sad as it is, I actually agree. I normally say give talls time, they will show signs and develop, but neither of these guys have shown anything IMO. Even guys like Troy Davis look more likely at the moment. Cook hasnt developed physically, appears mentally fragile, and hasnt shown anything in two years to suggest he will make it. He is still struggling to cement himself in the VFL let alone playing at AFL level. Fitzy, while I admire him and like his pace and agility for a tall, just has shocking skills and I fear with all the health issues he has, will likely not make it either.

We have a number of talls on the list, and I do think we should give them both another year or two to see if they come on, but I am not expecting anything and wouldn't wait any longer than that.

So as you were sitting on your couch and you found out that Barry Prendergast had left, I assume you sent your resume into the Club chasing the position, but then had to turn down the job when it was offered to you because you were too busy being a comedian

I have not seen every game mon

But have seen a few.

I think Williams is doing very well considering he had a month off and was in a coma for a week during that period.

Has he passed Cook I don't think so but there are three games to go

IMO it will depend on how they each play during that period.

The thing I like about Williams is he looks like he has a body that is going to fill out.

I could see him putting on weight faster than Cook.

He is of course 2 years older than Cook.

Cook just looks to me like a guy that is always going to be thin.

These are only my opinions but you have my feelings

Thanks for that.

It seems just incredible in the true sense of the word that Williams is even playing at all, let alone impressing at VFL level.

I believe that there is a vacancy at MFC for a recruiter and I look forward to hearing publicly about the outcome of your application.

Yeah fair enough, my point was though that anyone who had done some homework reading up one some of the kids available & watching highlight clips could've picked a decent player with any of our early picks. It's not like players are hidden away anymore and there are surprise selections early, everyone knows which players are available and have a fair idea who will be going in the top 20. Obviously the skill comes in picking the later picks but it just infuriates me that we let Darling slip (and you could possibly add Talia there as well) when everyone knew we needed a kid like this to add some grunt to our team and forward line.

I still don't really understand why we didn't take him, was it because we thought he might head back to Perth? Because he was caught with a girl in the sack on school camp? It just doesn't seem right and we've consistently taken stick figures who dominate juniors but take forever to come on at AFL level if they ever come on at all. Neeld seems to have addressed this with the recruitment of hard bodies seeming his priority over stick figures which is good because looking at Morton, Bennell, Watts, Cook, Fitzpatrick, Gysberts etc it's just frustrating thinking what could have been if we had selected some harder bodies with at least half of those picks to complement the rest of them.

EDIT: This is why I firmly believe we will be taking Viney no matter what pick we have to use.

I suggest you read the review of the Casey game

Lucas Cook: Kicks 7, Handballs 2, Disposals 9, Marks 2, Tackles 3, Goals 2

Played on a physical opponent in Nick Duigan and whilst he was kept quiet for most of the day, Cooky stuck to the task and kicked two goals

Duigan was flying a month or so back, just had a dip in form so finds himself back in the VFL so Cook's opponent was not some young skinny kid. Kicked two goals so as a forward job done, it probably allowed Leroy Williams a bit more freedom with a lesser opponent

You might want to reconsider your review of the review.

Its a poor sign that Cook is in the VFL 2's when we have so many injured.

He should be worried at year end

A lot of truth in what you say. The football "industry" is 50% fluff and bluff and the hangers on all try and ride the gravy train for as long as they can. A monkey picking numbers out of a hat could've done a better job than our previous two recruiters.

Interesting considering that they finished up with Jed Lamb the only other player picked in the top 30 that hasn't played a game yet.

The moral to the story is don't take any notice of the Swans early pick but take a great deal of interest in the ones they pick later on, they've picked up some gems.

I'll try not to take any notice of Leroy Jetta and Gary Rohan ;) but thats bloody hard given how talented they are!!

Rohan was playing some very good consistent footy before his injury and had gone up a gear this year. Hi sinjury was unfortunate and may set him back a year or two but I have no doubt he will be a long-term key player in the Swans midfield.

I've seen him a couple of times and to tell you the truth I can't see what all the fuss is; he may be good but I haven't seen it as yet.

Here are his career stats.

Look, I was vehemently against his selection pre-draft, as I thought there were better there... But that's beside the point.

I still think there's is potential there & I think I can see the reasons he was selected.

He may not make it, but how have we got to the point where we STILL don't realise it is too early to make that judgment on a kid, especially a tall?

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
