WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JIMMY TOUMPAS

Recommended Posts

I'm with Bluey 100% on this and I iterate

*Strong Greek family ties and I mean strong

Our most palpable need is inside ball winning GRUNT!

For those reasons above I hope HOPE we go the Philosophical driven Neeld Grunt strong body Model.

Look at Todd Viney's recruiting criteria. Best available is a multi-layered philosophy.

I never knew about the had to play for 8 years to be a FA thing.

That was my only fear. Having the guy for 2 years, then losing him only to get a compensation pick and start the 2 years all over again.

Guess we'll see tomorrow. I'm happy with both, but as a player ready to go obviously Toumpas is the best pick.

Toumpas and Viney rounded out the top 3 in this year's Ben Mitchell Medal award at the AIS-AFL Academy, which was won by Joe Daniher.

The Ben Mitchell Medal winner is the highest award given to a member of the AIS-AFL Academy squad and is named in memory of a former AIS squad member who tragically lost his life in a car accident on his way to training in 2002.

All team members vote on the award based on the player who shows exceptional personal qualities, including; respect, honesty, skill and competitiveness.

Jack Grimes is a previous winner, as is Jack Ziebell. If we're lucky enough to get Toumpas, along with Viney, we're bringing in a player of the highest character, as well as a gun footballer. In time, we'll have a leadership group that consists of Grimes, Trengove, Clark, Viney, Toumpas, Jones and Dawes. Talk about "culture changers".

With all of the false dawns that we have had over the years, this gives me hope. Notwithstanding the skills and physical strength that these blokes also bring.

How fortunate both the MFC and Essendon are to have snared such gun father/son picks. Realistically they would have both been top 5 picks in this years draft.

Encouraging to hear that Toumpas is of the same ilk and could very well become a Demon by tomorrow night.

Wines' ceiling is being Nathan Jones. Hard at the footy, loves training and working hard but his skills will always prevent him from being in the top echelon of players. Props to Nathan for working on his, and this year blazing away less to be granted the top 50 honour. Toumpas on the other hand has the potential to be anything. His run carry and glide is reminiscent of Pendlebury and he has excellent penetration and finishing with his feet.

I love Jonesy but you expect/ hope for more with a pick 4 and Toumpas will be a better chance of being the 'elite' player we so desperately desire.

Cant believe people are allready worried about the go home factor for a player we havent picked yet!

If we do get Jimmy T, partner him with Trengove and the other SA boys and there will be no go home issues to speak of. The club did the smart thing with Hogan, i'd assume they'd be accomodating to Toumpas too.

Go home factor is crap, he was never going to slide as far as Ports pick @ 7, so he and his family would have had a long time to get used to it. Coniglio was reported to not want to move interstate, that was proven to also be crap, and he has now come out and said he loves GWS and the boys blah blah.

We can't lose, we were expecting to take Wines who was rated as our best choice at 4, but now it looks like Toumpas will be there cos GWS might go on a needs basis somewhat... We rate Toumpas higher than Wines apparently, and therefore get a player we expected should have been a top 3 player.

Only concern I have with Toumpas is whether he is ready for Pre-season training? or will he be on a modified program? But thats a minor concern only.

Precisely, he and his family would be expecting him to be moving, either Blacktown or Melbourne..

I think the other thing to remember is that Toumpas falling to pick 4 - should it happen - is an aberration due to circumstances that won't be repeated for possibly a generation.

GWS are trying to round out their list. They may think that O'Rourke is best suited to a particular role they need filling and if there's one part of the ground they need to shore up it's the back-line, which makes Plowman attractive. Melbourne are the beneficiaries - big time, because if this was a 'normal' draft with 3 different clubs choosing I've no doubt that Toumpas would hear his name read out in the first three.

Perhaps the footy gods have finally decided to let us have the wind at our backs for a while... be a change after the year that was 2012.

I reckon GWS will take him instead of O'rouke.......Love all the media just guessing and have as much hope of getting it right as us.....

Beneficiaries along with whoever snags Brodie Grundy. I can't believe that some people are tipping he could slide as low as 14. He is a better prospect than Kruezer in my eyes.

All sounds too good to be true but will wait and see, just can't see why GWS would not take him. Not wearing the O'Rourke playing a particular role which means he will get the nod. I understand Plowman as a backman and Whitfield has been touted as Number 1 since March/pril, but IMO if Toumpas was to fall out of Top 3 it would be for a KPP in Grundy or a hope that Menzel's knee will stand up.

Under no circumstances to I trust anything to do with GWS & Grubby Allen, only possibility for me as mooted before is something to do with JV, Pick 3 and agreeance Toumpas falls to 4

The rumours just seem so strong that I suspect they have substance. It's been rumoured that the three players in question have been told. Whispers on 3AW says it's happening, Brett Anderson from Inside Football says it's on, Emma Quayle has heard it, the Hun have gone with it.

I remember just before the 2008 draft it was rumoured that Rich would slide. He'd seemingly been a certain pick 3 all year, but the rumours were right and he slid out of the top 5.

Maybe that says something about Kreuzer's draft class - Masten at 3, Morton at 4?

I hope it's right 'Ben', I've been wanting Toumpas since watching his SA finals last year. This would be a huge win for us.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
