On the FS tonight, Damian Barrett said that Boak made it clear to his management that he would be speaking to only 2 clubs....Geelong and North Melbourne.

Further, the belief is that he will stay with Port.

Wasn't Clark signed sealed and delivered at Freo?

Judd to Melbourne?

Scully is staying?

Damien Barrett has about as much credibility as the folks on The Shire.

Until he signs with a club...we don't give up hope. It's simple. If he's happy to play with North Melbourne then i'm sure we can get him. Just have to pay him extra. It's a play by his management. I think

If you were Travis Boak why would you want to come to Melbourne if you've already been at an unsuccessful club ? I know I wouldn't - unless I was offered silly money.

Boak isn't worth "silly money". He won't be playing at Melbourne.

funny...they said the same thing about Mitch Clark

I didn't. I'm on record as wanting Clark and wanting to pay overs for him. It was clear we needed a tall player of his ability.

I'd like Boak too, but he's a B grade mid that isn't worth the coin.

See, I'm on record again.

Hope Nth Melb and Geelong into a huge bidding war. Get into it boys and then may the "Oh sh.t" factor of getting the Demons to get rid of a first rounder to facilitate the deal come into play. Still like Caddy myself.

What good does having the money sitting in the bank account do us?

Try looking at it a different way. Football clubs are in the business of winning premerships.

What he is worth isn't the issue. We have money to burn.

We need more talent. Nathan Jones is our only genuine mid at the moment. I'd take B-Grade any day.

Sucessful clubs seem to find a way to keep talent.

At the end of the season we need to go buy the best available talent...

Why not - it's only money, if we've got the space in our cap because we've heavily front-loaded in the past and the general nature of our list we should spend it even if we pay overs to get a good player to the club. As discussed earlier in the thread - it's a better deal for us to get Boak to the club with big $s and pick 13 because he wants to come here than pick 4 and have Port force him here.

What do you think Boak is worth then, BH ?

Nevermind what he's worth - who in their right mind would believe North are one of only 2 clubs he wanted to speak to?? Geelong? Of course. North? Not one of the other 4 or 5 Melbourne clubs that would be interested in a "chat".

This isn't Judd picking the big 3 and us (as a ruse).

That this "fact" came from Jim Bob and a North supporting hack makes me even more sceptical.

I remember last year when Mitch Clark released a statement through the Fremantle football club about wanting to go back to WA ?

I think i woke up the next day and he was a demon :)

I'm suprised no Journalist has brought that up with him this year.

A mate of mine has told me that Boak has signed with Port. Not totally sure how reliable that is but he is a Port supporter so could be in the know.

Apologies if this is incorrect!

A bit of he said/she said, but Stevo of Herald Sun fame has just said on Twitter that according to Warren Tredrea, Boak has told teammates he's staying at Port.

I've also always taken the view that I don't care about the money. Afterall, I'm only a supporter who wants to improve the team. How about I just let the club worry about whether they can afford player 'x', or not ? But I've shifted my position. Firstly, I don't overly rate Boak, he's a B grader that may become A, or may not, and secondly, I want this club to become a great club. Presently it's a [censored] poor club. The great clubs won't compromise their playing list, or culture by overpaying a B grader just to get him. No-one wants to leave a great club. They take less money to stay. And great clubs don't overpay B graders to lure them.

I've said before, I know it's the chicken or the egg. I know we need to get good players to get better and I know that to get good players we need to overpay, or develop from within. I want to build through the draft. I'll be patient if I know the success we'll attain will be sustained. Just make some good effing draft choices and develop them !

Old, I've said plenty of times over the years that just playing finals gives me no jollies. Nothing has changed. The next time we play finals I want to know that we're embarking on a genuine flag tilt and not just making up the numbers. But first we need to become a great club. A great club with great culture. Winning a pissing contest by paying Boak and Port too much won't make us great. And he won't make that much difference to our playing stocks. Give me Jimmy Toumpas at pick 4 and the chance he'll be a star over Boak any day.

So I'll say that I completely understand your view and it's one I've previously held. I'd even sway if we were overpaying for Trent Cotchin, but it's Boak. He's suddenly become far better than his reality because he's available.

That said, I think you're right and the club won't hold its nerve. We've been down for too long and that will effect the club's decision making. They'll be spooked into making decisions that please supporters. It's called instant gratification. You see, we're not a great club and I doubt we'll be one any time soon.

My "quadrella" looks something like this - and as is known I don't follow U18 footy so my selections are representative:

3: Jack Martin - there has to be quality in the U17 draft and it ensures GWS pass on Viney

4: Toumpas - or whoever is best mid

13: Boak or Caddy - I don't want 4 x 18yos, B&C want to leave, we can overpay them to convince them come to us and 13 is unders

25: Viney

That gives a balance of star potential and immediate improvement.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
