OK. It almost seems obscene to be talking of this so early in the season, even for us, but as it's raising it's head all over the joint, on here and in the press, I was wondering who or what we might garner come EOS and then it occurred to me I'm not 100% around what our picks actually are.

Given a finish of say 16th then I assume we have normal pick 3. I'm assuming that nothing else goes in front of normal picks this year, but I'll fess I find it al la bit of a mine field trying to sort this 'picks' thing out, what with so many side rules.

So could some kind souls please inform the rest of us unwashed as to how this ought (emph OUGHT) to play out come seasons end.

This of course takes no lead from any trades that might alter what we understand to be the lay of the land as it exists presently.

Theres also our F/S situation to consider. ive got a headache already !!!

I was about to make exactly the same thread, its really annoying me how mysterious thwe situation is - someone please lay it out for us clueless ones PLEASE

Assuming 16th finish.

Pick 3- for 16th place

Pick 4- Scully compo immediately after our first round pick (not used for father/son selections)

Then it depends on the finishing positions of Adelaide and the Bulldogs as to where our second Scully compo pick being the "mid first round pick" is positioned but it is likely to be somewhere around Pick 12.

Our next pick after this will be our second round pick. Again the number is dependent on the finishing positions of other teams and their use of end of round one compensation picks. It is likely to be somewhere around Pick 23-26.

Hope this clarifies it somewhat Belze....

Ok..so what does happen in respect to the Father Son situation if were forced to go high ? Which pick gets used and how does that then effect the compo picks if at all?

cheers

Can't use compo picks for f/s, only regular picks i.e. normal first round pick (3?), second round oick (23-26?) etc

Don't see the logic in this but thems the rules

Basically, assuming we finish 16th....

If GCS or GWS bid pick 1 or 2 on Viney

- Picks 3 (Viney), 4, 12, 25

Or if GCS or GWS don't bid on Viney

- Picks 3, 4, 12, 25 (Viney)

I get that..but if we had ( HAD ) to use 3 on Viney does that affect where compo pick occurs.

if for argument sake we traded , for what ever reason ( some sort of player gain etc ) our pick 3 and say received back pick 7 for eg..would then compo pick one occur still at 4 ? ( where originally was ) ?

murky isn t it..lol

pick 3 on viney changes nothing

f/s "bidding" (and therefore resolution) occurs before trade period

No. Our compo picks are tied to our finishing position.

Likewise if we trade them away they are still tied to our finishing position.

So they are very likely to remain as picks 4 and 12.

I was contemplating earlier this week about Viney (3), Stringer (4), and either Vlastuin/Menzel (12).

Not a fan of trading early picks for established players although if we can pickup another Clark win for pick 12...

Our picks wont "remain" as 4 and 12

People forget the Bulldogs first rd (after first pick) compo.

If the ladder stays as now, and the commies at afl headquarters didnt give any compo picks to anyone else, the picks would be something like this

Pick 1 GC

Pick 2 GWS

Pick 3 Melb (Viney F.S)

Pick 4 Melb (compo)

Pick 5 Bulldogs

Pick 6 Bulldogs (compo)

Pick 7 Lions

Pick 8 Port

Pick 9 Nth

Pick 10 Tigers

Pick 11 Freo

Pick 12 Carlton

Pick 13 Melb (mid first round compo)

With GWS also activating the pick it has following Adelaides first pick, our second round choice would be pick 25

Lets hope a miracle happens, and we can use 25 for Viney. cant see it happening though.

At least we get to watch that goofy top 10 countdown, and actually be interested.

I for one, hope we can swing a deal with the franchises, to prevent them bidding on Viney.

I like that we have the Bye this weekend so the coach and FD can watch the two tier 1 U18 games this weekend.

No way Viney will slip to Round 2. that would result in the MFC picking up 3 top 5 players in this "super draft", the rest of the AFL would squeal like stuck pigs...

But wouldnt it be nice to hear the squealing?

Stuff the other clubs, and dimwit. Lets play this to our advantage however we can.

Can we borrow some visy brown paper bags?

As for Pick 4 the teams on four wins are NM, PA, BL, and WB.

NM have GC, GWS plus Melb, Adel, St K, Carl, WB, and Freo at Etihad.

PA have GWS, Melb in Darwin, plus Ess, Freo, and BL at AAMI.

BL have Melb, Rich, GC, St K, Adel and the WB in Qld.

WB have PA, BL, St K, NM, and Sydney at Etihad and Rich at the G.

We would have to win 4 more games from here than these teams as our percentage is irreversibly terrible.

I just cannot see us winning the 7 or 8 games needed to do that. One would have to fall in a heap.

I hope we can do it.

It would take some doing but it would be a controversy over in a flash - one afternoon when the bidding is done, and from there it is done and dusted.

And we will hold the cards too - we could turn around and say 'get stuffed' to all involved as Viney would already be earmarked with Pick 25...

If anyone in bottom 6 bids on Viney

- Picks 7 (Viney), 8, 12, 29

correct?

Thanks all

If GWS or GC bid for Viney with no intention of using their pick on him surely that amounts to tampering with the draft.

The Pick 12 would be 13 with the Bullies comp pick.

And 12th would mean NM, PA, BL, and WB below us?

If any of those teams wins 5 games from here - we would have to win 9.

Can't see is doing it...

Look the tongue is firmly in the cheek but since according to another thread we made such a fook up of taking Scully over Martin and Cook over Darling, lets get the hindsight genius's put their recruiting nouse on the line and tell us who we should take.

On a serious note I'm not happy I have to attend a family function on Sunday I was hoping to go and see the WA v Vic Country U/18's and see some of these kids in the flesh

It would be like scumbags situation.

We would all talk about it, and get all cranky and uptight because we know the truth, but in the end, we will never see the proof.

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
