THE 4 DRAFT PICKS WE HAVE

Why dont people consider bail as a small forward? He has great defensive pressure, good eye for goal and works hard.

Because his awesome endurance is wasted in the forwardline. Our team is really unfit, so we need our hard runners doing the hard running.

Have to agree with Chook here. Bail is an elite runner and we should utilise that, HB or in the middle.

I think he can step it up a bit too. We could well have one of the important linking mids that we need right under our noses.

Absolutely, there are people on here who don't rate him at all and would see him gone at years end.

I didn't, but only because i have a MFC Player memory of longer than 6 months, and knew what he is capable of.

But he has been down, as has McKenzie, and Trengove...

Jeez we ask the kids to do a lot...

Nasher, this is another point I continue to raise. None of us have seen the contract, but surely there is a clause in there regarding where we are to take Jack, just as there would be a get out clause of some type that if Jack were to suffer serious injury that could resrtict his playing ability, that we are able to terminate said contract. Or if there are offield incidents that could tarnish the Club, etc, or if Jack's performance/form/development didn't see him as a genuine first round-type, then we would use our own disgression on where we can select him.

I'm not trying to be a smart ar$e, but there has to be things in place to protect not only the player, but the Football Club also.

I'm totally amazed that I am in the minority on this subject. If Jack is rated in the Top 5 at the end of the season, I'm happy to pick him up at Pick 3, but if other players have come on and he slides to a market value of Pick 10, I'd be livid if we have to use our Pick 3 on him.

The idea of secret deals with GWS and GC stinks in my book. I don't want our Club to have anything to do with them. We should put ourselves in a situation where we don't have to (ie ensure that Jack is not rated as a Top 5 prospect).

This has been thrashed on the Viney thread but I can't let this post through to the keeper.

You'd rather break our contract with the son of a club legend than do a deal with GWS and GC.

And you're "totally amazed that I am in the minority on this subject"

OK ...

Exactly. I understand the desire to be "ruthless" in business, but that means doing what you can to gain an edge over your competitors - it does NOT mean wiping your feet on anyone and everyone who finds themselves involved.

6 months? Most people are lucky to have a player memory of longer than 1 week.

We could do a deal with GWS and Gold Coast .

They promise not to bid on Jack Viney in exchange for Dunn and Joel MacDonald.

I'm sorry, I thought you were about to give two proposals that might attract GWS and GC...

Pick 3 for Viney it is then.

I think the way our gameplan has been working, it seems like the HFFs will be required to provide quite a bit more run than the HBFs.

I think HBF suits him at the moment.

Dont worry Jack will be at MFC next year, they can be as "livid" as they want - he is a demon.

Its all now just a matter of "price". Either way in makes no difference to us - but will it make a difference to them?

This draft is "critical" draft for us in so many ways, it easily has the ability to shape our 2013 seasons onwards in so so many ways.

We must, must be active in all components of the recruitment process.

IMHO we need to

a/ Hand pick a Free Agent to target

b/ We have the picks to easily be an active leader at the trade table - we must must make effective use of them. All picks should be placed on the table for the "right" player.

c/ With our remaining picks we must not go down the same obviously wrong path of just focusing on "kids" - I have a feel all teams will create more than the minimum required 3 spots this year, which should open the ability to recycle reasonably earlier than many other sides.

We have been given a rare opportunity (thank-you Tom) lets not waste it by spending it on "best available kids" surely we have learned its all about your complete recruitment strategy - not just "top 5 draft picks".

Given that this draft is meant to be a mid-fielders dream crop, best available will be also "needs" for us.

I hate the term "needs" what does it really mean in comparison to the 18YO kid you are drafting?

However, if its a trade then I fully understand the term needs. If that makes sense.

actually Dunn and MacDonald ain't that bad for no cost. Both senior players who could provide some protection for youngsters

no real skin off GWS/GCS noses

and all they have to be is truthful

Yes, skin. Although they've got an extended list there's still a limit to the number of players they can have and it reduces each year back to the standard number - list spots on their list will be at a premium, they can't fill them with players they don't really want. We'll need to offer them quality players they want or picks.

...and Dunn is UFA in October and can just go where he likes. MacDonald has little value. We are looking at massive pick upgrades (Pick 40 for Pick 100) or a Bennell/Tapscott/Cook/Blease type.

Oh, Hangon, if you weren't so pointlessly rude and constantly incoherent you would be quite lovable...

You don't talk footy, and ever since your re-emergence with a PhD you have been a constant source of wasted internet.

Oh, and by the way, Old was agreeing with me about the worth of Dunn and MacDonald in hypothetical trades to GWS and GC.

So, move on.

tell GWS we'll trade them pick#3 for the first pick of the 17 mini draft. then they wont bid coz they ll want our pick 3.

then we get first pick of 17yr olds and get viney for 2nd rounder.

hell, gws may even be keen to bribe gc for us just so that they can score themselves a pick #3

Mitch Clark rocks and we now don't need a "gun" forward... We have one.

I would like to see us use our first pick on a mid.

Then for our 2nd pick I am thinking we could pick a mid.

The third is a tough one but I think it would be best if we pick a mid.

4th pick is tough.... tossing and turning over it but I reckon we should go out on a limb and pick a mid.

hows this for a scenario

GC gives GWS pick #2 in draft

we give GC pick #3 in draft

We get Pick #1 in 17 yr old draft

GC gets pick #2 in 17 yr draft

GWS gets pick #2 in strongest draft.

(Obviously this would all need to be agreed upon before the bidding session via informal chats)

we can then use our pick #4 for any player, pick #12 for any player and second round pick on Viney and get the best 17 yr old

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
