Of course it's not that difficult Billy - BUT - what he is trying to say is that we are already committed to taking Viney. He is training with us, playing for the Scorps and there is absolutely no chance that we wont take him. So, any team that had picks before us would bid on Viney just to force us to use our first round pick, even if they didn't want to use pick 1/2/3 on him. They know that we are going to take him. Could you really imagine Sheedy going "oh, well lets just allow the Dees to use their second rounder on Viney even though we could force them to use their first round". No. He'll be an [censored] about it.

Who will be a better player - Viney or Whitfield?

Exactly right. Anyone who is hoping that GWS or Gold Coast are going to allow us to take Viney with our 2nd round pick is deluded. It's all about having a competitive advantage.

But from all reports Viney would be top 5 in this draft so I don't really see what the problem is. We'll be giving up exactly what we should be.

Of the same opinion DD. Let's assume we finish 3rd last and end up with picks 3 & 4, and GWS and GC (who would finish below us) don't bid for Viney with their pick 1 or 2, then we have picks 3 and 4 to use on any 2 players we want. If it cost Carlton pick 3 for Judd (and a bit of extra stuff), then who would we want to get should we wish to trade either of our pick 3 or 4? Nb. I wouldn't trade both picks, but I'd definitely throw one out there.

Josh Kennedy was pick 4 in the 2005 draft, a KPF with 1 year in the system. He was hardly "a bit of extra stuff".

Sorry Billy but there is no way in hell you'll get a player of the calibre of the names you mentioned with just a pick 3, throw in Watts or Trengove and you might be a chance. Maybe 3, 12 and player like Strauss or Howe would get it done, maybe not.

Without a marked improvement onfield we have zero chance of attracting anyone anyway imo.

The issue is that if ge is the 5th best player and we had pick 3, it's a stuff up to give that pick for him. I agree we need to hope that he is not a top 3 rated player and have gc and GWS (say) use their tip 2 picks on players that are rated 1 and 2. That way we win big time. Cant believe I have posted on draft prospects after 3 rounds. Someone shoot me, is it really this bad already?

Jack Viney and one or two mature age midfielders at the end of the year.

That's why I would seriously get him to sit out the U18 champs, not attend draft combine. Let's make it impossible for Clubs below us to consider him, similar to the was West Coast are rumoured to have handled Darling. Give the other pricks nothing, it's time we manipulate things to favour ourselves rather than tanking.

Try and throw Emma Quayle off the scent!

based on all the noises Neeld is making i think he is comfortable with bottoming out and taking some quality kids with some handy draft picks.

He's starting to sound like Bailey - "we were in the game, we were being competative for periods etc"

I cant blame the bloke for accepting it though, Woosha did the same to get Gaff. Neeld has a 3 year contract, im sure he's more worried about how we'll be going 2 and a half years down the track rather than 1/2 way through the first.

You don't get it Billy- We are obligated to take him as he already has a 5 year deal with us. Them declaring their interest and chosing him as their first pick is of no consequence to them because they know that we are WILL be taking him. So at no risk to them, they get the opportunity to "screw" another club out of a scenario where they can pick a player touted as a top 5 pick, with their second round pick.

It would be silly of them not to do this. I'm just wondering what happens if they nominate for Viney what that actually means. How can they nominate for someone who is contracted to another club. And if they nominate him and we chose someone else, are there any ramifications for that.

The first few picks in the draft are seriously high stakes! Just think back to how much media attention gets poured onto the issue of who's going to go 1st, 2nd and the rest of the top ten, come draft time.

If JV is not a clear stand out as the best in the draft (which atm he isn't), then GWS and GC are not going to lock themselves in to picking him, when they have something as valuable as pick 1 or 2 to use. They will want to have the flexibility to use the picks as they see fit and to leave their decisions till the last minute, and make 100% sure that they are making the right decision.

Just because we have a contract of sorts with JV, and he is training with us and playing with our ressies, most likely will not prevent us from opting not to pick him in the extenuating circumstance that we finish 3rd last. I haven't seen the contract, of course, but I suspect that the club would be wise enough to leave a loophole. Even there isn't a loophole, it is easy enough to create a whole lot of doubt in other teams minds, via well placed media leaks, about what we will do. GWS and GC just won't take the risk.

I do get it Sloonie, but what I, and you, nor anyone else on here get is that the 5 year contract would most likely have conditions in it, such as an injury clause, and I'm sure there are other clauses in there. One clause may be that if we determin his draft range between 5-9, and we finish with pick 1-3, if a club lower than us "force" us to use an earlier pick that what is not warranted, we have the right to not use our first pick on him. I don't know, I'm not a lawyer, but I would like to think we have our bases covered.

Could you imagine the [censored]-storm if we didn't pick him though? He probably wouldn't want to play for us ever. His old man might leave too.

I would be interested in finding out the terms of that contract with Viney. I am very sure whoever finishes below us will bid on him to screw us. It would be so nice to have pick 2&3 or 3&4 AND Viney instead of just 3/4 and Viney. We really need it!

I'm sure JV wouldnt mind shagging chicks on school camp, getting boozed on northbridge for the good of the club?!!

I see your point Sloonie, but (as per my comment above) I'm with billy on this. It's just too high risk and high stakes for the teams above us to nominate him, unless he really is rated the standout.

Another thing that will have them doubting themselves is is the fact that they know he probably wants to play for the Dees, and with his old man. Would you risk losing your preferred number one pick, and having to pick up a top 3 - 5 pick who may or may not want to return to be with his Dad in Melbourne after the first two years, just to stuff around another team that's wallowing around the bottom of the ladder with you??

In my opinion: a club taking a punt on Jack Viney is riskier than a club picking luke ball after he had nominated the pies as his preffered destination

Has JV been plagued by injuries for years, affecting his ability to perform on the field to the point where his coach is unwilling to play him at crucial stages of important matches, and is willing to let him go for nothing?

If you recall, Luke Ball's body was cactus when he went to Collingwood.

Years of OP had affected his output, and god knows how the filth managed to get him better, but they did.

Viney was reported to have signs of OP last year and the club would manage his load - put him out in the paddock and create doubt in the minds of any potential suitors. We need to be ruthless.

Affected his output at St.kilda...not the Filth...There is your big difference.

Luke Ball was not as injured as the media told us...it is not possible...Before last Friday did he miss a game?

Right........ so Luke Ball was faking injuries during a GF, because he had designs on leaving the club at the end of the season?

Nice work Sherlock.

No not at all...i am not talking conspiracies here....But Luke Ball went to Collingwood and did not miss a beat.

So i say there was more a problem at St.kilda than Luke.

To my understanding it was all about timing actually, more than anything.

And resources.

He practically had his own physio all preseason.

The one thing that may put clubs off if we finish 3rd for example is the go home factor, and that they may lose Lachie Whitfield ect

I think we would take the better pick if Viney is 3-4 picks off where he is meant to go and we are getting screwed, then Viney making his return in 2 seasons

I would expect he would make this clear and that we WILL do it to other clubs

Posted

So if we do finish 3rd last behind GWS & GC for example. We will have picks 3, 4, and 12ish.

In this case as already stated GWS & GC can prevent us by bidding for him with there first picks just too stuff us up.

What about the MFC make an agreement with them that we will not poach any of there young stars for a 5 year period! Something like that! That may work!

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
