Sorry to disagree but Brian Taylor is the bottom for me.

He has no idea

At least he knows players names. I can always picture McGuire searching for his team list when a non-Collingwood player who isn't a bonafide regular gets the ball.

Posted

I enjoy Whately, Hudson, BT, Lane, Commetti & Bruce.

Dwayne Russel is downright horrendous. So sick of hearing 'can get and go' 20 times a game. Please Fox Footy give him the flick!

As far as comments go, Shaw is an absolute embarassment and Lynch cannot string together a sentence without stuttering.

Malthouse and Lloyd seem to provide the most insightful special comments.

I Like Edward McGuire for his fierce dedication to the ideals of journalistic ethics and his single-minded determination to see the truth come out into the naked light of day : no matter what the cost even should it be to the detriment of the football club he represents so constantly.

Commetti is good value if you can get used to his irritating voice.

Dwayne Russell is easily the most painful, egotistical [censored] in the media and should not be allowed to call footy.

Spot on ! He's full of contrived excitement and LOVES a winner . Most neutral broadcasters have a soft spot for the underdog but not Dwayne Pipe . The Pies can be smashing GWS and he'll exclaim "Beautiful " and worst of all "Collingwood , the greatest of the Grand Old Teams ".

LOL..........are you Eddie?

My Rundown On Commentary Duds

FOX FOOTY

Alastair Lynch - looks like he is going to pass out everytime he tries to construct a sentence, is a complete meathead

Tony Shaw - has no idea about modern day football, some of his comments I would laugh at if he wasn't serious

Danny Frawley - apart from being part of the worst scripted show on television in After The Bounce, he also has little clue

Dwayne Russell - this bloke has about 10 sentences in his arsenal and can somehow manage to commentate 2 hours of footy using nothing but those sentences

CHANNEL 7

BT - the other guys in the box want to talk footy, but this boof head just wants to crap on like they are sitting back at the pub watching the game on tv. If you want to go down the comedy route surely there are a million people who are funnier and know more about footy than this dunce

Brett Kirk - harsh on Kirky as I love him, but he just sounds far too scripted, could almost imagine him doing a Ron Burgundy off the teleprompter if someone played a joke on him...I'm Brett Kirk?

Any Current Player Drafted Into Friday Night Coverage - if I flick on the footy on Friday night and am greeted by Nick Maxwell's punchable head holding a microphone one more time, I am turning it off

I don't like Eddie McGuire as a commentator. But he's achieved something I never thought anyone would be able to do and I'm not sure how he did it. For all my life up until a few years ago there was only one team everybody (other than their own supporters) detested and that was Collingwood. I now believe Collingwood is less disliked than Carlton and possibly Richmond and Essendon. It's a clear cultural shift and probably the most significant thing Eddie has achieved for Collingwood, even though he has tried to mask it by promoting the "us v them" (aka "side by side we stick together") line whenever possible. I thought I'd never see an AFL competition without Collingwood as the 'go to' team to deride. But it's happened.

Stephen Quatermain is pretty good.Even bags his own beloved Hawks when required.

Hudson is a very good unbiased commentator IMO also.

I also like the two ex cats that do special comments as in Lingy & Tom Harley.

Dermie can sometimes be on the ball but gets annoying when he thinks every player should intimidate the opposisition and play like him.

Dermie... its todays game and not 1989 mate.

Unlike BT and Commeti who hate Melbourne.Especially BT.Has nothing but negativity for the Demons.

Mr Nasal Whately is cringeworthy each & everytime I hear him talk.

Have to agree with the I hate Carlton more than the Pies comment too.

They are the most dodgy club of all time...and continue to rort the AFL system to this day I believe.

Just to add one extra name, even though he doesn't call AFL, I think Peter Donegan is one of the best and most versatile sports callers going around. Wouldn't mind having him call AFL rather than VFL (but please don't bring David Rhys-Jones or Phil Cleary with him).

For our non-Victorian friends, Peter Donegan calls VFL games on ABC1 each Saturday with David Rhys-Jones and Phil Cleary adding not very special comments.

After an 8 year hiatus just stumbled across this thread. So relevant now given the excruciating over analysis, furrowed brows and pressed fingers into the breastbones from today's commentators. Dwayne Russell and G Lyon both unlistenable.

My uncle was a past commentator on the ABC in the 70's and 80's and is mentioned earlier here from a time when the game was augmented by commentators, not dominated. He was an Essendon player and on my Mum's side. All my Mum's side were Bombers. Dad's side all Demons. My sister sat behind Mum in the car with a Bombers sticker on their side, I sat behind Dad with a Demons sticker on ours.

My uncle was furniture at Windy Hill so I always had to sit in the members stand there with my Demons beanie on. I'm 56 now but clearly remember my Grandma telling off another lady of similar age re my Dees beanie to leave me alone, 'he's only a boy!' Reckon it was '71 and I was 7.

Fond memories from a different time when from memory the two 45's, both named Smith, would play on each other. Always got a kick out of that.

Anyway, Dees were [censored] last night. But [deleted] I love 'em.

I spent much of yesterday's game trying to determine whether Brereton is a smart commentator or just wants us to think he's smart. Some of his comments seemed insightful; others seemed like flights of fancy with no justification on the vision available. Either he's a genius or he's got us bluffed.

I urge anyone with Kayo (and I assume fox footy) to listen to the matches through the radio links on the AFL website . You can choose any station that airs the game and play it through your Bluetooth speaker.

You'll just need to pause the TV for about 15 seconds to sync it up.

I refuse to listen to any match with Bruce now and even Huddo who seems to love to see us fail and sounds condescending at times.

I can't begin to tell you how much more of an enjoyable experience it is.

I never watch with the sound on. On the rare occasions I hear him, Derm sounds like he's acting out what he imagines a smart commentator would be saying. But he always takes 3 sentences to say what a smart commentator takes 3 words to say.

Exactly ! Derm tries to be the measured intellectual. He does actually makes sense at times, if you can be bothered to shovel through 40 tons of coal to find that elusive diamond.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
