Big men on long-term injury list

I don't know if this has been mentioned before or not but it looks like the big fella is out for another eight weeks.

My calculations are that three rookies can be elevated.

i would say Nicho, Magner and maybe Kel Lawrence if Davey doesn't come good.

Nicho, Couch and Magner are absolute Monty's of being promoted if there are 3 spots available!

I might be mistaken but don't we only have two rookie spots?

1 spot because we only have 1 veteran.

1 spot for Spencer LTI.

Then mid season another rookie upgrade is available free of charge so to speak?

Or have i missed one?

Edit: excuse my stupidity, i forgot about big max...............

No hurry. Make sure all the candidates pushing for contention get as much match time in the NAB as possible, and if anyone proves good enough, then elevate. If nobody puts their hands up, don't elevate anyone until they do.

This, People who say Kelvin Lawrence isnt a big show are silly imo

We need a small forward and it isnt a Gimme that it will be Davey with Spencer on the LTI.

Gawn long-term injury list?

I agree with Nasher that there is no hurry.

I do believe that if he is fit, Magner will get one. And Nicho is likely too as well although Neeld may want him to work more on his disposal before upgrading.

Part of me thinks they will keep the third spot open for the first couple of weeks of the season to see how the likes of Couch, Evo, Sheehan, Williams go at Casey...

I have been told by a very, very reliable source that Nicholson is guaranteed an upgrade for the start of the season.

I can also say, without as much clarity that Magner was seemed to be ahead of Couch for rookie upgrade before the practice match where Couch was among the best.

I'd be interested to see which of the 3 get the whole year spots, i'm tipping magner and couch because i think nicho could work on his disposal?

Does that mean Fitzy is Casey's #1 ruckman?

Gees this puts too much emphassis on Jamar being fully fit. Let hope he doesn't get injured, especially first half of the season. I would be very loath to play him too much in the NAB cup.

Fitzpatrick would be slaughtered in the ruck at AFL level. Yes we will have no ruck depth for a while. Upside is when Gawn and Spencer come back we will have some of the best depth in the league though. They were quite a combo at Casey.

We have Jamar, Martin as proven first rucks. We have Clark that can pitch hit there.

And we also have Lyndon Dunn for centre bounces......

Could we have got rid of Newton too early?

Rotten news for Spencer and Gawn. Speedy recovery to both.

I reckon stef did an admirable job in Russians absence last year. The benefit now is that if we really have to we have mitch and sellar to fall back on. Would be worried if we were in that spot, but last year it was stef or bust.

I doubt we will see this. Big men with bad knees are not much good, I can't see both of them making it.

Gawn with two reco's at 20 is bad. His knee was the reason why other clubs didn't want to take the risk, Melbourne may have got that one wrong. Melbourne picked quite a few injured players in recent drafts, Grimes, Scully, Gawn, Fitzpatrick. All have had ongoing problems so far. It’s too early to tell if the recruiting was poor, but I've never been a fan of picking players with injuries (I may have passed on Judd and Selwood like others did)

Does that mean Fitzy is Casey's #1 ruckman?

He'll be competitive at that level. It will also help his development. He's put on some good displays for Casey before, so I see no reason he wouldn't do well there. Obviouslt he's not ready for AFL yet, but it's coming.

leave the gags to the pros Rhino B)

Didnt mean to cut your lunch there.......

I was sure Newton's mere mention would upset those seemingly frustrated by No 29.

Now that both Gawn and Spencer are on the long term injury list does anyone else see a potential ruck issue?

If Jamar or Martin get injured who is likely to fill in for them?

Clarke?

Watts?

Dunn?

Sylvia

Sellar has played in the ruck before. So unless over the next 8 weeks we lose Jamar, Martin, Clark and Sellar, we won't be seeing Fitzpatrick in the side.

As sad as this is for Spence it is great for Fitzy's development, and that of our young rookies who are looking to step up.

true, just like Gawn getting a good run last year once Spencil did his knee, Fitzy will get a decent crack at Casey until Spencer reurns after 8 or so rounds?

The ruck stocks look a little thin,

Jamar>Martin>>>>(Gawn)>>(Spencer)>>>>>Fitzy

Fill ins maybe Clark or Seller?

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
