Exactly DC. Claims on here that people had concerns with Scully back then and that it was obvious (only in hindsight) they we should not have picked him at #1 are ridiculous.

half right

the "concerns" were seen by some and as it turned out not ridiculous.

it certainly was not obvious though that he should not have been picked

The "ridiculous" is in reference to not being picked.

You could also include in that saying that we should have taken Martin instead.

I hate to say this BUT I think Scully will be a better player than Martin (hiding under the bedcovers now)

You can't look at who they subsequently picked up to see if they were fairly compensated you look at what they actually received. They did very well getting pick 3, 20 and Kennedy imo.

Yes you can. All they got were picks 3, 20 and Kennedy. They got uncertainty for a player that was proven at the time and has gone onto proven that he is on track to be one of the greats. The only way could deal with the uncertainty was to find two stars with those picks. They havent got them.

If you are saying that fairly compensated after what they could have got in the negotiations then thats fair. However pick 3,20 and Josh is far far < Judd. WCE did the best of terrible situation (which was there own doing).

If the negotiations were even and arms length i would have expected that Judd would have been worth 3 top 10 picks (say 1,3 and 9/10) in a proven strong draft list. But even then you have to good talent in that draft year and you have to draft well.

Carlton could only give the draft picks that they had (plus players to WCE) otherwise Judd could have gone into the draft as an uncontracted player putting a price on his head (like Ball) and WCE would have lost him for nothing. They did the best deal they could have.

Gee, I thought I did alright! It's not September so I get to see finals, it's not October or November so I don't miss the Spring Racing Carnival, it's not Christmas or New Years, or Easter for that matter, I just didn't take this pr!cks birthday in to consideration.

Maybe I should change my name to Philly2803??

Hahahaha, there you go.. sounds like you did. I'm pretty much footy, although some returning interest in cricket this Summer with the new blood.

Link to a post where you doubted we should draft Scully.

I'm not complaining about our recruiting team!

It's just a simple exclamation of the Fact that I, after watching TAC, Trenners & Scully & others, That I,,,, had my own Doubts about scully. Just call it gutfeel,,, But I certainly had my doubts with his hmmn, I don't know, ways.

I didn't like him that much, but went along with the popular thinking of the Ex perts.

Under the circumstances you are right. But the original comment was that WCE were equitably compensated for Judd. I think you would agree they werent.

WCE were held over a barrel with Judd leaving as a star and out of contract. Carlton could have offered more but didn't want to. I cant blame them they had WCE on toast.

Did you like any of the other draftees better?

I am with you on this DL. I never doubted his football ability but his persona was always "odd" That was proved correct as only certain people could go through with lying in public for over a year. Extraodinary mental strength, but also deceit.

You cannot compare Ju$$ to $cully. Wet Coke bought on their own problems, and Ju$$ had had enough.

We couldn't even sign $cully to more than apprentice wages.

Tom is a loner and aloof. A trait that we should always now be wary of. That is why i will always believe we picked the wrong kid.

I'd love to see him Jack tackle him.

I meet trenners at the b&f and said to him when you see scully sling him into the ground. And he give me a great big smilen and said he will do his best.He is a very smart young man.

It is not Hindsight...i am getting very sick of that word...The March 5 Press Conference says it all, and we now know Phill signed 5 months earlier.

At the time i wanted to believe he would stay, but i was never confident....Range Rover was on the $$$ all the way....

I really do not care what other posters think of what i write on this topic...My opinions will not change, they in fact get stronger with every piece of press i read. Over the last 4-5 years i have put a lot of money into this club, and will continue to do so...But Tom $cully was one mistake in many positives...But it certainly does sour the "Tanking" arguement....not sure if it was worth the pain....still deciding.

Martin doesn't need to be much better to be an A grader. By some peoples definitions he may already be there.

Scully has played a handful of good games and one great quarter. He will be the main 'go to' mid for GWS and he will be targetted by every other team, knocked pillar to post every game.

He has a dodgy knee and is not a great kick.

I would have Martin in a heartbeat

Disclaimer; I am not a big fan of Toms' and may be concentrating on his negatives without acknowledging his good bits

Posted

Right now, I'd put both Trengove and Martin ahead of Scully, but that's just at the moment.

Scully had the knee problems last year and issues of knowing he would jump ship at the end of the year.

Giving that these two problems (perhaps the former, definitely the latter) should no longer plague him, he should have the capacity to play at this best more this year compared to last year.

We do, however, have to take into account the inexperience of the GWS team, which could go against him. Give it 10 years time and we'll be able to make a much more informed judgement about these three players. I am sure they will all be excellent in any case.

Know mate !!! Don't drop it. That is what a polite, gentile, politically correct Melbourne would do over the last 45 Years.

AFL is War on turf. Well it is, IF One wants to be a winner at it.

We need to show More Passion & venom at our enemies, footy enemies... If we are to have ruggedness bred back into our souls. Let it happen, and Lets Get Mean & nasty again like Barass had & tried to instill into a group that had Given Up The Ghost long before...... Checkers & Smiths...

It's that mean & nasty hunger edge that I want to see back. From the Stands as well. Get up & fight you bastards.

The Scully infatuation makes this club look sadder, weaker and more desperate than anything.

He became just another AFL player the day the GWS stuff was made official as far as I'm concerned, it's disappointing the vast majority on here can't seem to see it the same way.

We got 2 high draft picks for the inevitable sell-out, have some patience and watch how those picks play out.

Looking at this thread is the equivalent to watching a rejected prom-date who can't seem to get over it.

Absolute garbage.

What do you think tribalism is, & Rivalries are made of. This is footy, not the local neighborhood 'Days of our lives'. It's combative & meant to be.

If your worried about 'a look' or a 'politically correct image', maybe you should take up a 'priesthood', or maybe not, hmmn, a squeaky clean image????? The MCC, there's ya go!

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
