The Simon Black Thread

I will probably get shot down because we dont give our own players over 30 2 year + contracts.

But he is a multiple premiership player, brownlow medalist, norm smith player I think & a great leader!

Not too mention a gun footballer!

He is fit & had a great season.

We crave leadership and a consistently gun player week in week out.

Would be awesome! I can see him playing 4 more quality years.

What do yo think?

Without being critical, no.

his body is just about done, quality footballer but finished last season like he was treading on egg shells

If I was targetting a Lion midfielder it would be Rockliff but he wont come cheap -Ball Magnet

I think he would be fine with all the rotations through the midfield.

I would rather we went for someone like Farren Ray... would be cheaper and has a heap of ability.

I agree with jungle dee in that Black would be great.

I disagree that we will get 4 years out of him...

I think he has one or two possibly injury ravaged years left.

But we need leaders and he is that.

I would inquire but he may want to stay a Lion for life.

and is soft as butter....

give me Black anyday of the week...even in his current old slow state...he can still get the ball in a contest

We'd need to be able to protect him.

Absolutely NO for me and he won't leave anyway.

Black would be great. I'd love to see us get in some leadership like that short term. Would be a massive boost for the young'n's. Getting four years out of him is unlikely but also unnecessary.

I don't think the club would go down this sort of path but hey it's fun to speculate.

If we got 2 years from him that would be great. If we get another 1 too make 3 better. Happy with 2 good years though.

I think while playing for one club is great! Players will look after themselves when the end is near. Look at Luke Power too GWS.

Black would jump at 2 years I would think. I wouldnt be surprised if GWS make a play and tell him to go into the pre-season draft!

I'm not a fan of the concrete 1-year offers to over 30s, but given we seem to have that in place it'd be laughable to offer 2 years to Simon Black. He'd still slot easily into our midfield though. Hopefully he can work it out with Brisbane and remain a one-club player. Both parties deserve that.

I think Black has a wonderful record and has been a great player.

But his body is shot. I cant see how we can gift a 2 yr contract to a 30+yo player after we have put the 1 year blowtorch to so many MFC player 10+ years players.

Farren Ray......You're kidding

Black is a champion of the game destined for the AFL Hall of Fame.

If Green/Robbo/White/Yze/Bruce feel aggrieved they are kidding themselves.

Agree. He will be 33 before next season and has played 296 games. Look elsewhere he will stop quickly.

Come on, Brisbane are our trade table buddies of late, Trapper, Macdonald, Clark why [censored] "savvy Vossy" off

Also he is 4 games off becoming the Brisbane Lions greatest player pretty much, is turning 33 ect

Will only slow other mids development

Farren Ray......You're kidding

Not kidding at all actually. At his best he is a very good player. I recall him running rings around a few of our players when he was at the Dogs. As much as i like what Black can do, I would certainly prefer Ray over a player who would effectively be just biding his time before retirement.

While jungle dee's op correctly acknowledged Simon Black's great record as a player, I think it was more about the outstanding leadership his acquisition would bring to the Club. I certainly don't see any of that in Ray. IMO Ray would be an ok pick-up in the PSD if we had list space for him, but that's about all.

I also reckon Black is 2 or 3 years too old for our needs, and I highly doubt he would leave Brisbane anyway.

Full respect to Simon Black, he is a genuine champion, a decade of being among the best in the game.

But I don't think he'd be especially useful to the Demons at this point.

If Black wanted 2x years he could get it on the GC or GWS list. No other club would give him that. Still a gun, but he is one injury of his career ending. You don't put money and games into those players.

Farren Ray is available after a stint at a second club for the same reason his first club moved him on- outside player who goes missing far too often. He isn't getting any younger and still cannot impose himself on a game of footy. Has games that are super, then does nothing for 3 weeks. You would expect more from a top 5 draft pick who should be in the prime of his career (he is 25 years old with 146 games to his name)

It's not as stupid as most threads about drafting 30 year olds, because Black is a proven legend of the game. One of the all time greats.

That said, he's at the stage where his body is on the way down. Moreover, I can't imagine, at his stage of his career, he'd want to leave and lose the lustre of being a one club player.

I think we have enough talent on our list to develop without needing him. He wouldn't detract from our list, but he wouldn't add too much either.

I have no doubt Black will be affored the highest accolades for his career and rightly so. He has been a champion.

At 33 with a creaking body, I would have thought you would reward essentially what he is expected to provide going forward not what he has achieved in the past.If he was 30 then yes lets talk.

And its not the aged individuals themselves but how the whole process is perceived by the other players as well.

Its semantics really. I think he wiill be 300 game player at the Lions and finish a fabulous career with them.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
