Sounds good if we can arrange a trade and get one of the top 17 year olds, it will virtually give us 2 first rounders in the 2012 draft as we already have secured Jack Viney

Really agree with this - give up one pick for a player we would think would be a top 5-7 in next years draft. Keep the other for later on. No way shold we give up both picks for a child!

You might have a change of mind if you saw O'Meara play! He is superior to Scully in all aspects bar accumulation of disposal, which O'Meara concedes he needs to work on.

If GWS only give up the 2 mini-draft picks, they will be O'Meara and Crouch (unless a SA club gets one of them).

I totally agree, I don't want to give back both picks to sheedy for one player.

i don't mind shedding a one of our top older players plus one compensation pick for O'Meara, but don't want to go beyond that. Same with the mini pick 2, a bit less.

And I don't want Goddard for our 2 compensation picks, a player and good pick or nothin. And Not for Goddard who will be 27, prior to next season.

We need more quality depth, Dangerfield, Gaff, a Boak or similar. But not for the earth.

Might have to and I wouldn't hesitate and then some. O'Meara for Scully - it's a no-brainer. Sure GWS get a great deal but let's worry about us, not them.

I note that the saints say they won't bid for a U17 pick. There will be others who feel the same. So it might only be a few clubs bidding for the U17 picks as many know they won't have the asking price available. This will make our chances better of getting 1 of the picks. We will know this time next week.

This is true, we through the departure of TS have the resources available to use if warranted, other clubs will need to give up quality players, either to GWS or in a trade to get the appropriate picks... this is harder to do, especially as you may not get the 17yo after making such moves

Much will depend on the FD's priorities and I think it would be a courageous effort to go all out for O'Meara without also making a play for players who would fill our other "gaps".

Agreed 100% Old. The 2 Scully picks for O'Meara is a no brainer. Kid is a gun already. He's definite top 2 or 3 next and the fact we've already secured Viney means we can be even more agressive with these picks. Imagine being able to secure Hodge and Judd from the super draft? If they are so keen on draft picks I'd even give them our 2 compo picks and maybe our 3rd round pick this year. People are dreaming if they think 1 compo pick and Warnock or Bate are going to get the job done.

I honestly think we are in a strong position with the Compo picks. GWS have said they want draft picks. They are already pillaging this draft and can pretty much get whoever they want. However, next year they're back in the draft like everyone else so would obviously be keen to strengthen their position next year.

If we're serious about Jaeger (which word has it we are) then the 2 compo picks will be the absolute minimum we would get him for. It's time the club got aggressive and show we mean business!

We drafted key forwards last year and unfortunately we just need to wait for them to develop. Our ruck department is strong and has depth, as does our defence. We desperately need to add some A graders to our midfield. If you look at the best teams from the last few years, they've all got star studded midfields. If we can secure Viney and O'Meara on top of what we've already got, then we are well on the way to having our own. Everyone keeps going on about a gorilla forward but I can't see any being available for trade and any we draft are going to take 3-4 years to develop. If we want to go down the mature age route, then we should be able to pick someone with a late pick or in the rookie draft.

Has it actually been reported that Melbourne are interested in O'Meara or just Melbourne supporters?

I'm hoping they make a play for him but I haven't heard squat about if they are even interested to begin with (even though I think they should be)

Posted

So if we think it will take the two $cully first rounders to get o'meara, whAt would it take to get crouch? I think he tested well this week inc a good sprint time and is rated highly as well (with no risk of 'go home' like o'meara).

You don't agree...

I said the exact opposite.

I would spend both picks on one gun - whether they be a 23ish year old homesick star or one of these kids in the special draft.

We have to try and make sure we replace the level of talent we lost with those comp picks.

O'Meara is from Dongara which is about 3.5 hours north of Perth. So it's not exactly home. He moved to Perth for school this year, so moving interstate won't be as big a deal to him, as to others.

Very similar situation that Trengove was in when he was drafted.

Why not worry about them? We'll be competing directly against them for Finals spots in 2014/15 onwards. We don't have the hand to give them the advantage.

We have to be careful of this. They have 2 Years to pick up elite and mature players with a bigger Cap than the Suns, I believe.

They haven't got the picks or the players of value to spare to gain any footage. If they trade away talent, then that means they're on a big rebuild. I don't think their supporters can stomach that.

So I think they'll try the Sydney model of list management.

Yeah, but its not like if we dont trade they wont get anything.

They will just get a similar deal from another club

I would think Jamar plus a compo pick would go close. Maybe need some adjustment.

I'd even look at adding another player as well as Jamar to our compensation pick. eek.gificon14.gif

O'meara must be good considering people are happy to give up Scully and two first round picks to GWS for him.

Before anyone says it, I realize we didn't 'give up' Scully, but as an end result that's what it would mean.

Posted

No, end result is Scully OR the 2 picks, not AND.

Scully for the 2 picks, the 2 picks for O'Meara.

It hasn't cost us both.

GWS might end up with both, but that's a different matter.

Haha, u and i think alike. I know that we haven't given up $cully and the 2 compo picks (he has magically morphed into the compo picks), but from a GWS pov, they are giving up nothing and are gaining $cully + 2 compo picks.

Effectively for us, he goes out and in comes O'Meara (in a years' time though, don't forget) - (should he find his way down to the MFC)

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
