The word on Brad Green

Maybe next year

As the Captain of the Club that is exactly what he has to do.

Sorry WYL but he is not responsible for every poor player we have on the list.

e.g. It is hardly his fault that Davey struggled most weeks to get a kick

On your basis Jnr was responsible for us winning 2 wooded spoons in a row.

I have always, and still do, think the captaincy is massively overrated.

Green had a relatively poor season (albeit 37 goals from effectively a forward pocket is not a bad return), but to use this entirely in substitution of an AA 2010 season is ridiculous. At 31, I think a one year contract is unreasonable from a club/player perspective in these circumstances.

Two years, with the second being largely performance based, is pretty much on the money. I do believe, as I have maintained previously, that a blanket one year rule for over 30s is ludicrous.

You are letting Brad Green off too lightly O D. The Captain is ultimately the man in charge on the field..I don't think Brad's effort at this in 2011 was good enough by a long shot..I mean he has been at the club since 2000...he knows it well.

There have been many throughout history that thought they were capable of leading only to find out they weren't; Brad is still a valuable player and without the captaincy he will return to form and will become a favorite once again.

I hope he does RF i really do...But he still must be accountable for 2011....1 year contracts from now on is all i ask.

His performance was poor but that isn't what convinced me he isn't a leader or shouldn't be captain - it is his awful body language when he is down that can leave one to assume he is selfish and consumed by his own performances.

Another issue is with the related lack of vocal and physical support for his teammates; he rarely talks at the breaks and relies on Beamer to do what the captain should do. I know it is tough to do those speeches but you tell the bloke making the noise to shut up and you fake it the best you can. He puts his body on the line when he has to, but he doesn't get in the face of the opposition when we are being punished as Neita used to, nor does he get himself, and throw himself to the bottom of every pack like Junior did when the 'chips are down'.

He isn't a leader of men and he has trouble mustering the courage to fake it.

He can have two more years.

But none more as the captain of the MFC.

I'll leave it at that as I don't want to harp - but I can sense a softening of position and I will find it unacceptable if Green is not asked to 'win' his captaincy back.

My sentiments exactly rpfc...A place of power & respect must be earnt at this club....from this day forth.

My take is different .The usual other sides sniffing around no comment from manager but club confident after talks between Brad and my avatar.

I feel he is trying to up his price in his last contract like Aaron Davey did with his

I think this is spot on. We are now in a situation where Green is (I think) the only player eligible for the veterans list, is a very loyal servant, captain and his "annus horribilus" still yielded nearly two goals per game. He doesn't have the history of soft tissue injuries that Bruce and Junior had and, quite frankly, I think he deserves to be part of the start of our upswing. He can still be a valuable contributor to the side IMHO.

I also believe he is important to resign and my earlier comments were merely interpretation of the herald sun article .

I merely feel the posturing is all part of him getting the best financial return for himself from the MFC as he is entitled to do

He will sign.

“It’s an honour to accept this award and I’d like to thank the players and coaches for giving me the opportunity to be in the leadership group this year. I’ve learned a lot and it’s been a pretty big year to say the least, especially on someone like Brad Green, who has copped a fair bit of flak, but he’s done an absolutely marvelous job. [He’s done] a lot of work behind the scenes that most of you guys don’t see - he’s been fantastic this year. He’s really kept the group together.”

Yep.

The footy field is Not the place to hide, or shrink away.

Brad is a nice fellow. we can see that, and can tell when you meet him. Too, Nice.

When he tries to become assertive, It looks like he gets stressed. And then communicates poorly.

Now THAT is leadership... from Jack Grimes.

Yeah, not bad from a guy that's played just a handful of games... one day when he has managed to stay injury free for long enough to string a few more together, he should be considered for higher honours... until then, I think I would opt for someone with experience to take over Green's mantle.

Great kid is Jack.

My problem is with the stuff I do see.

A leader cannot be a leader if they aren't leading on the field of play.

Agree rpfc.

First you have to be on the park.

Otherwise you are some sort of coach.

When he has strung together 20 games in a row I will think about him for the leadership.

Lead well Onfield, & direct the teammates well. Get those Issues working well, and the offfield issues will also be less.

Brad Green is Important to Melb.

But I believe the Captaincy may be too big a burden as was seen by this season and the performence he put in

I hope he stays but like with any player at Melbourne no player is bigger then the club and we only wnt players who want to be there.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
