It's the principle of it. No trades with the GWS. There are 16 other clubs out there, we can do a deal with them. Hell I'd rather do a trade with GC.

O'meara Oshmeara... one 17 year old. We need much more than that anyway. Mate!

Letting personal affairs get in the way of business. If Coniglio was on the table for Warnock, tell me you'd say no.

All the more reason to trade.....Don't run away.

Beat them whenever we can.

I really don't think I want to draft another 17 year old in this point in time.

How long can we keep losing experience and topping up with juniors?

I'd look for a club that is DESPERATE for one of these babies (maybe they're in rebuild stage) and ask for their best deal on a star that they might be able to cover from excess stock. He would be between 24-26 years old.

Im not too sure who this star could be, but we have enough carrots to dangle now.

No more 17 year olds, and no GWS deals.

They have to trade these 17 year olds.

Being a winning bidder would ensure that we gave them one of the best deals. thus giving them a "leg up"

It may seem petty- but I believe this could be the first step in getting tougher; you shaft us and you're on your own!

If compo picks don't count and we trade our first round pick would be able to use our second round pick (as our first available pick) to select Jack Viney?

F/S is done before draft trading so NO

Childish narrow minded attitude.

If a trade with GWS gets the best result for MFC then by all means we make. Why settle for second best- hasn't that been the problem with MFC for too long now, not being aggressive enough and kow towing to others.

I don't care who we trade with as long as it makes us stronger!

It will make beating them all the more sweet!

Unless Green is moved on or retires, hard to see how we're going to lose any experience this year.

On the other hand, we have a lot of 2nd/3rd/4th year players who will be one year older - and thus, more experienced.

Hypothetical- we draft another 17 year old, and in a few years time when he blossoms into a star, someone takes him from us. Now that's another couple of years of development with limited output down the gurgler.

I know it's unfair painting everyone with the Sully brush, I just don't see how getting a ready made gun is any worse than taking a kid who may/may not be a star, and is basically unproven. As it is we are one of the youngest lists already.

I think some of you guys place too much emphasis on youth. It's not the be all and end all.

If Dees finish bottom eight next year, they'll get three picks inside top-10 of a super draft. F/S onball jet Jack Viney included

We've already lost 2 years (I know it's only 31 games) without any delists, and Sully represented on field leadership beyond his years. We'll know for sure after we announce our delists. I know most of our delists won't exactly be regulars in the starting 22, but at the end of the day it's still out with the old, in with the young.

From my understanding we will have to use our first round pick on him- then we will get the next pick (first round compo) and mid round pic (first pick after bottom 9 pick) correct?

You are in that same group who seems to think that there is a plethor of 24-26 year old gun hard mids just waiting to get out of their clubs and come to Melbourne.

Get out of fairyland.

Your broad sweeping draft a gun statement is ridiculous. Name names.

And in case you forgot the trade rules,

It's not just a case of offer up a couple of picks to a club and bingo Pendles is ours.

The player must agree to and want to come to our club and his team must want too or be in a position to give him up.

Name players you think we should trade for with these picks.

I don't know how to find the OOC players, I am looking on the net. I'll get back to you.

I've been looking and I can't find it, but I bet they're out there and we should try to find one. Either way I'm not industrious enough to keep my argument going.

Just kind of over chasing extreme youth most of the time. We will get smashed in a final IF we make the 8 next year

Hahahahaha

Peter Larkins would probably have some good info on this too, trust me.

Wouldn't it be ironic if he played one game broke down missed 10 played in 11 broke down again and missed the next 10 that would relate to $1m per game for the year.

Our 1st round compo pick and a player (Warnock, Bate, Dunn, etc) for O'Meara.

Chuck in this year's 2nd round pick too, if we need that to get it over the line.

If not, same offer for the 2nd pick and we'll take Crouch.

1st round pick this year on a kid like Sumner, Kavanagh or Docherty.

Elton would be nice too, but I'd expect him to be gone - GWS need talls.

Then use the mid 1st round compo pick next year.

Likely to be around pick 10, depending on other teams before us exercising their compo picks.

And then our 2012 1st round pick will be eaten up by Jack Viney.

Decent talent injection, I'd have to say.

I believe that the stay at home full forward we should be looking at is Todd Elton come draft time. Sure he's young and will need time to develop, but he is more advanced in his body than the likes of Cook and Watts were when they first came onto our list.

How many developing forwards do you want?

We need someone to kick it to the forwards, someone to get a clearance, someone to take advantage of Jamar's hit outs; we need midfielders, midfielder, midfielders, that's what we need. We will never get in to the finals with the midfield we have it is probably the worst in the competition.

Even Bailey was smart enough to understand you need about a dozen midfielders, how many, and what is the quality of the ones we have, go through them.

Posted

We will win out in the short term and in the long run - We have a team capable of playing finals ( Essendon made it this year and they're not great ). Our list should get better compared to most other Clubs . The 2 picks we get for Sally are more than adequate . Not sure there's a cure for a degenerative knee so we end up better off - And if we can somehow land Malthouse ..........though Ross Lyon isn't a bad 2nd choice . Btw is the avatar tasteful ?

This will be very interesting to see how the clubs handle the compensation picks.

Scenario 1 - We keep all the picks and use them, most likely next season. I think we're in for one more year of 'pain' ie no finals, so next year is the obvious choice. Let's say we finish 12th, our picks would be:

7 (normal pick),

8 (comp pick after our normal pick)

11 (Comp pick, mid round)

For us to have to use pick 7 on Viney one of the clubs finishing below us will have to bid for him. There is a chance that this may not happen, next year is going to be a very strong draft, if those clubs think they can't get a better talent then they won't bid. It is possible that he will only cost us a 2nd rounder and the lower we finish the more likely that will happen (please note that I am not saying we should tank...) That is a seriously strong position to be in with a talented list.

Scenario 2 - We trade 1 or both comp picks this season to inject experience into the team and go all out for finals next year.

I'm learning to option 1, we still need to get a lot of games into our kids ie Watts, Blease, Gysberts, Tapscott, McDonald, Fitzpatrick, Gawn, Cook, Trengove, Nicholson etc. One more season of development is required, as much as I hate it I think in the long term we'll be better for it.

The problem is I'm just sick of losing...

We will be made to use our first pick on Viney. We have committed to him and another club(s) will make us pay the premium.

As for your option/scenario I agree that they are the 'high-level' options available but I would be trading for talent.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
