Ross Lyon

Grandson of a gun

That's because it's true.

See Geelong on Friday night. St Kilda got back into the game because they had their better forwards playing deeper, this was mentioned many times on the telecast last night.

As I stated earlier in the thread, they played just as deep as they did in the first half. The difference being Ross changed it up by playing Milne further up the ground early in the third to provide run and get Nick Smith to chase him around (who had done well on Milne i50) and occassionally allowing Riewoldt or Kosi to push up as marking targets up the ground, whilst they double backed and got back deep forward when/once the supply increased. The delivery became better inside 50 and they began to contribute to the scoreboard and eat away at the deficit.

It's not just about leaving them forward as you have suggested.

What percentage of coaches who don't win a flag get re hired. I can think of Eade and Wallace in recent times and that might be about it. It's not choosing badly or burning them, you just rarely get another gig if you don't win a flag. Eade was a reasonable success at the dogs, Wallace a massive fail. But back on your point Balme has gone on to tremendous success as football department manager at Collingwood and Geelong and Daniher seems to be doing a great job at West Coast. I'm surely someone will look at Bailey as well. He might not be a tactical genius or a genuine tough senior coach but he is a good operator with a level head and I think a reasonable teacher.

Oh and Ross Lyon has as much mongrel as Burns don't worry about that.

Malcolm blight coached one season at north, then lost a couple of GF to teh hawks with Geelong. He didn't taste premiership glory until his 3rd club...winning two for the crows. The cats had some very talented players as well. He did hoever burn teh saints a little later on however....

The actions of RL last night leave me a little perplexed.

Why would you say a 23 year old was retiring?

let alone make comments that players are to retire before they are told?

Surely got Pelchen's hands all over it.

I'd be happy as long as he does not have final say on drafting/trading. Good coach but has a post 2000 era Sheedy penchant for picking up recycled duds to wit the Saints ending up with a list largely comprising of limited role players kept for too long or recruited from other clubs.

Great call........coach yes, recruiting input no!

Lovett, Dempster, Dawson, Peake, Gardiner, Polo, Gamble are examples as to why.

Guest Darren Lamb

Tim Harrington and Barry Prendergrast are at the club for that reason.

And I'd say that even at the Saints, Chirs Pelchen is now in charge of that side.

His distinct lack of class has been evident in the way the "retirements" were handled on the weekend.

Barring Lovett which was well I have no words for that one, the others all came cheap Dawson and Gardiner were vital players in 2009 when the Saints went so close against a very very good side, Peake's form this year has been very good and was one of the reasons they went on such a good run mid season, Bartram could be similar. Polo and Gamble haven't seen enough of them.

I think the Saints list was better under Thomas and lacked depth under Lyon. I may be biaised but I think when the bodies get bigger we are ahead of the list he had at the Saints minus a Goddard who I don't think we have anywhere on our list.

I think Lyon would make our defence formidable

They didn't pay much except for Lovett and that was a big risk that could have paid off big - Lovett in the first GF last year = Saints win.

Lovett - trade pick 16

Schneider and Dempster - trade pick 26

Michael Gardiner and Birss - trade pick 43

Peake - trade pick 48

Gamble - pick 90

King and Charlie Gardiner - trade pick 90

Polo - pick 103

Dawson - Rookie pick 13

The Luke Ball deal was a fiasco though.

To get away from the rest of today's drama...

Michael Nettlefold (spelling, idk) was on Footy Classified tonight and squirmed under the pump from Caro, Hutchy and Thomas. Interestingly though, Garry only asked one question - that of 'Is there or is there not a getout clause in the contract?'. He asked it twice when Nettlefold tried to roundabout him, then Nettlefold replied with 'I can't comment on the contract situation of the executive.' (something along those lines)

I'd suggest that there is, definitively, a getout clause in the contract. Furthermore, with other comments that Nettlefold tried to weasel out of, I'd say that they are very, very worried that Lyon's actions and statements after Saturday night were leading towards him activating said clause.

I almost wonder what they are attempting. They quite obviously are reluctant to give Lyon an extension to his contract, but it's also clear they want to have him there next year. Do StKilda want to try and snag Malthouse in 2013? It's entirely possible. The man can't coach next year but would be hot on the market then.

It's bloody weird to be honest. Trusting the oldest coach around with a full rebuild? That's what that list needs but I wouldn't give that to Malthouse.

I felt Garry's performance last nigh was first class. Whe Nettlefold repeatedly said Ross Lyon had a year to go, Garry clearly had enough of this mis-truth and asked straihgt out if there was a get out clause, and IMO clearly knowing there was one. Nettlefold dodged this.

How does garry know - it can only be through talking with Ross Lyon's minders.

Lyon (G) looked determined and furious in an understated and professional way and I am confident people will pay for their actions through the club's next moves.

"Lyon is believed to be preparing to tell his Saints players that he will most likely head to Melbourne."

Most likely? So he's preparing to tell his team that he's most likely leaving for Melbourne? "Yeah, sorry guys. I'm probably going to Melbourne. Thought you might like to know. I'll let you know when I've made my mind up."

Encouraging stuff in the general tone of the article, but I'll save the happy dance until he's signed. Still a bit pessimistic about the probability of it happening, but there are plenty of good reasons for him to come across. Make it happen, Dees.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
