Tom Scully in September ...

Exactly. If they did know they would have dropped the bomb when he was omitted for the Port clash. Common sense tells us this. Everything else is just speculation.

Some posters on this site just want to wallow in pity. The AFL has vested interests to lure some "class" to the new franchise. Which club would have been able to stand up to these circumstances? None of them.

Lets just suck it up and move on. Secure the optimum compensation, secure a coach and keep on living!

Well that's just untrue, for 2 reasons. Richmond re-signed Martin despite buckets being thrown at him too. Collingwood Swan, Thomas and Pendlebury. There's other similar examples. Whether they are a no. 1 draft pick who has delivered nothing or a later draft pick who has delivered a bit is irrelevant.

If you don't see that this has part to do with the money on offer, and part to do with the problems at our club, then your eyes are closed.

Just remind me what year Ablett was the No. 1 draft pick?

Lol...probably any year...I was merely pointing out we are not the only losers in this type of scenario, although I tend to agree in the sentiment of your post.

If Tom Scully makes the decision to move to Sydney, don't take it out on him. Express your displeasure for a system that has allowed it to happen, two years after he was drafted at No. 1. No one can blame Tom if he accepts what he's supposedly been offered. And, once again, only GWS, Tom and his management know what he's been offered. And, the MFC, if his management is playing the two clubs against each other. And what good manager wouldn't do that?

I agree with you H&S but I am furious with this "process" we are being forced to accept.

If he goes we will be more unified than ever...in our disgust at his decision...and he will get a torrid time whenever he plays us at the G

Thank god for Jordan McMahon, at least we struck gold with Trenners. If Sculy goes I just can't bring myself to wish him well, I hope he turns out to be the spud of the century.

In your dreams mate. It will be a shocking mercenary act. We're not talking Judd and Ablett who took teams to the top, won brownlows etc. We're talking about a spotty 19-year-old who shafted his club after 2 years.

OR perhaps Martin and others value premiership success/ not wanting to be in a losing team 99% of the time above money..

Maybe Tom is a little more interested in his financial security than they are?

To make a correlation between Tom leaving and us being an inept club is unfair. We are in a pickle at the moment, but even if we were strong we had no chance to offer the cash. And it seems Tom likes cash. Which is a shame because I truly believe he could have been part of something great.

We will move on, we will get a new coach, we will move out the chaff and rise once more. Stiff upper lip- this experience will galvanize us.

There is a theory going around that we shouldn't receive the same compo as Ablett because he is the benchmark and he was/is the leagues best player, so everything should work down from that.

I would ask those people though to go and have a look at Abletts first 2 seasons of footy and then make that comparison, because then maybe we deserve more.

Pure & simple it was all about the $

If it comes out and say that the $ are not the reason he is going thats BS

People are having a crack at the MFC... what can they do pay a 20yo 800K-1m per yr, that would put the clubs salary cap & other players at risk!

So the club spends 10% of its 8mill cap on 1 player???

If he was a Judd,Franklin,Abblett I would say why not!

Blame the AFL not the MFC or Scully, but I would question him as a person if his driving ambition is the $. He will say that he can see a great future blah, blah.

I agree 100%. If he says anything about this being a great challenge/ part of something new, I will dead set kill something! This would be about money money money and nothing else. That to me would be the ultimate insult.

If you are going to leave us after 2 years you were never really with us anyway. If you want a "challenge" or the opportunity to "be part of something new," well we are the perfect vehicle for that sunshine!

Save a bit of face and be honest.

Forget Ablett that was a refereance they gave to your power club quote, but along a clubs number 1 Pick line in 2 years we don't have to look 2 far, think Jeff WHITE

In other news the Dons are getting absolutely shafted by the umpires and the joy I am feeling at the Bombers dismay is cheering me up a little :)

The only downside is that Carlton is the beneficiary.

West Coast will take care of them!

And if Carlton win at least we won't have to compete with Visy carlscum for a coach. Positives out of negatives..

See what we're doing here? Were moving on..

There is ... and you are witnessing it in realtime!

Written and directed by K. Sheedy.

I's suggest this is the last time anyone on this site labels him 'senile' or a 'fool'.

You know, 'Swings & ladders', (or thereabouts) & especially the rotary play equipmment. Just keeps going round. Everyone gets a turn!

West Coast lost Judd right after he carried them to a flag. They were extremely strong on and off the field at the time. (Yes I realise he was technically not a number #1 but surely that's not the point)

How about Des Headland saying "thanks for the memories" to Brisbane right in the middle of their dynasty?

Nah, strong clubs never lose their #1 draft picks.

Go home factor is a different situation. All gave something to their clubs before leaving anyway.

I don't get it.

He said from the start he'd wait to the end of the season to make a decision.

He is now taking a week from the end of the season to do that, as he said he would.

I think for a kid in his position being offered what he has, its perfectly reasonable.

If it were my son I'd want him to take his time and make the most informed decision.

He hasn't deviated from what he said he'd do, either.

I think there's still a very good chance he could decideto stay.

What this whole process reeks of to me, is professionalism.

On the outside, nobody is looking at MFC as a mockery - that's a perception put on the club by it's own insecure supporters.

The reflection is on GWS and the player alone.

You've got to be joking surely? If the kid wanted to stay at the Demons do you really think he would need to go up north to check out the GWS facilities? He knows what their offer is, if he was going to stay he would be sitting down with the MFC and working out the particulars on his next contract.

If this was a similar situation but involving say Adelaide or West Coast instead of the new franchises would you still maintain the belief he was only "making up his mind" if he went over there to "check out their facilities after a year of solid speculation on his future.

Face it, the kid is just a mercenary who is whoring himself out for the bigger paycheck. If he had half the integrity and character everyone has been spouting about him since draft day he would have signed earlier in the season or at least begun negotiations with the MFC.

My only query is why didn't we offer him a solid third party deal? Do you think Carlton or Collingwood would have let this happen? Do you think Murphy and Thomas signed on for the amount on their official contracts? Do you really believe Hurley is any chance to disappear up there this time next year?

I've been prepared to wait and take Scully at his word all year but this "travelling up to check out the facilities with mum and dad" is the nail in the coffin and an absolute slap in the face to the founding club of the game and those who decided to bless him with our most famous number.

Anyone blaming this on Demetriou, Sheedy, Allen, the MFC or any other party is delusional and missing the point. The only one to blame in this situation is Scully who has shown himself to be nothing but a money-hungry grub. Say what you will about the likes of Judd or even Barassi but at least they had already given great service to their clubs in the form of premierships and in the case of Judd at least made sure that his club was given sufficient compensation for leaving. All Scully will leave is a massive hole in the salary cap.

The AFL banned them. suprise, suprise....

I can't wait to see the compensation.

I can't wait for the draft.

I can't wait to get another 25 games into our boys.

I can't wait for 2012.

Well said . We have to be positive . Bring on the next phase please .

And yet Visy keep raping our rainforests (probably) to stuff money in Judd's paper bags. [censored] disgusts me!!!

I told you they riot in Europe for this kind of stuff!!1

I watched the Hutchy interviews twice today.

The first time was on the Sunday Footy Show and the second was on TAC Cup Future Stars. On both occasions the laughter from the panel after hearing Scully and his father claim that no decision had been made was palpable.

Do they realise how farcical the situation has become?

Speaking of farces, I suppose nobody thought to ask how it transpired that Hutchy and Channel 9 camera crew just happened to be on the spot at Tullamarine Airport for the exclusive interviews.

    HIGHLIGHTS/LOWLIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Melbourne traveled across the continent to take on the Fremantle Dockers in sweltering conditions at Mandurah south of Perth in a game that delivered the club both its highlight and its lowlight in the first minute.  But first, let’s start by doing away with the usual cliches used in connection with the game. It was just a practice match and the result didn’t matter. Bad kicking is bad football. The game was played in severe heat, the swirly breeze played havoc with both teams resulting in

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom
