Yeah how ridiculous to vote for a four time premiership coach who is one of the hardest blokes to have played / coached. Why would we possibly want someone like that ?

Only a fool would think Matthews was our best candidate.

Who did you vote for E25?

I voted Mathews, only because there wasn't an option "none of the above". The bottom option was the closest thing to it, but it also meant selecting an unproven candidate which I don't want to see happen. I don't selecting Mathews in this situation is the most foolish thing to do. Those that selected Laidely on the other hand...

I voted an assistant.

I want Malthouse, but as that's not realistic, my list is from Neeld, Sanderson, Hinkley and McCartney.

Yep, let's pick an untried assistant instead of one of the greatest coaches of all time. Yep, that makes sense.

I'd choose one of the assistants. There's an idea we need an experienced coach because Bailey didnt work. That's rubbish, we just chose the wrong assistant. All the coaches on that list are washed up and I would be very disappointed to land any of them.

If lethal declares he is interested in the position, dare I say, the job is his.

I think he is wise enough to know if he has the fire in the belly.

And the board is wise enough to recognize a golden opportunity when it presents itself.

Only a fool would think Matthews was our best candidate.

Only a FOOL would think he's past it.

He broke the Collingwood Wobble Board in half, & McAlister was never the same. Just the 1, the first in how long?

He broke the Bears bad culture and bred in a new successful one... What was it? 3 Pete?

Really, hmmmn...

Not sure why Viney and Matthews are in the poll when both have ruled themselves out.

The more I think about it the more I like Sanderson. If recent weeks have suggested anything it is that the MFC needs a good culture and I think the best Assistant from the Club with the best culture and success over the last 5 years is Sanderson. I believe he has been the defensive coach at the Cats as well so it would be good to bring an experienced defensive focus to the MFC as well

Not sure what the fascination in the media is with experienced coaches. Malthouse, Clarkson or Roos would be nice but that's a pipe dream. Seeing names like Eade, Ayres and Laidley thrown around makes me nervous - why would we go after any of these types? None have experienced any real success. Laidley in particular, what did he ever do at North? Nothing!

I reckon an experienced and successful assistant like Neeld, McCartney or Sanderson would be the best fit, barring a Malthouse/Clarkson/Roos miracle.

Whomever the coach turns out to be I can only hope a somewhat more no nonsense , less holistic approach is taken. I cant help but feel some players have had too long a leash and far to much largesse . It became all too cosy and predicatable. Im happy for anyone who can knock a real sense of purpose with urgency into this team

It doesnt have to be frire and brimstone....just very fair dinkum ;)

Less holistic? I'm not sure I understand what you mean here.

Guest The Tweed Pig

It was interesting hearing Wallace on SEN yesterday. He made the observation that 6 of the last 7 flags have been won by coaches that were untried when appointed. Malthouse is the only exception. There's been a suggestion that Melbourne should push for a coach with AFL experience to take our young group to the nest stage, when recent history shows that the assistant's pathway works. He pointed out that the assistants are often more submersed in cutting edge coaching technology than the senior coach, as they don't have to devote their time to any other club issues.

I was already in the 50 year old Brendan McCartney camp as his CV is impeccable. He was with Bomber Thompson at Geelong for 10 years and Hird has already stated that he's the most impressive person in coaching he's met. Tom Harley at Geelong also speaks glowingly.

Brendan McCartney is my preferred candidate on the proviso that we can't get Malthouse.

Bloody good endorsement of Mark Neeld

http://www.heraldsun...f-1226114058203

Assuming that Malthouse won't leave Collingwood......Neeld is certainly firming for the job.

What i like most about him is that aside from his credentials as an assistant, he is coming from the most professionally run club that is leading the competition in terms of football department development and extracting everything from the players. That knowledge is invaluable.

Sanderson's credentials are very good too and you have to back the clubs decision makers in.

My preference is for Neeld however at this stage given Malthouse and Clarkson are most probably unattainable.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
