The Casey player report also mentions that Martin was kneed in the ribs, but toughed it out playing the rest of the match.

He may miss no time.

I've also been forgetting that Tom McDonald isn't solely a backman, he's capable as a Leigh Brown size back-up ruckman / utility.

I'm not too proud or embarrassed to ask...what does "proprioceptive input" mean?

All good LDC, i probably get asked something on this every other day at work. Proprioception is our knowledge of where are body parts are in space. Our brain processes information from the ligaments that direct it to where it is. That is if you bend your knee to 90 degrees, or if someone(thing) else bends your knee to 90 degrees your brain still knows where it is and therefor can compute which muscles and with how much is required to straighten it.

So when a ligament is torn the information doesn't get sent, so a piece of the puzzle is missing. Other ligaments/soft tissues can overcome the lack of input. This is premise of retraining your 'balance' after a leg injury, like standing on a wobble board. Some people are naturally gifted in this area and not much retraining is needed, others need loads of it to overcome a knee or ankle injury

So in one week that's Jamar, Spencer, Fitzpatrick and Martin... IN ONE WEEK?!!!

That's ridiculous.

It's not ridiculous, but it will be character building.. Remember, it's not all about ladder positioning in the eight, it's about building a Power side, and club.

These things are sent to try us, and they are, and will continue to.

This is an Opportunity for Gawn, Campbell & Newton to show their stuff as representatives of the MFC. It's also an opportunity for our other players to grab the Bit between their teeth and not let it go.

edit: schpelling..

Raw or not, Gawn has been playing in the ruck for all of his sporting life. He'll probably struggle around the ground for fitness and whatnot, but there's one thing he should be able to do is contest physically in the ruck contests for a large portion of the game.

Dont think fitness will be an issue.

I am warming to the idea of Gawn in combo with someone else.

I read an interesting post on this thread before about the potential of Jamar actually playing this week if the swelling goes down. I dont know why i remember this but it must have been about 04-05 when Adam Goodes played with a torn PCL (im not sure the extent of the damage in this case) but he did play the rest of the season without incident however if my memory serves me correctly that particular injury was the catalyst for Roosy to take him out of the ruck permanently and turn him into a Utility. Im pretty sure this case also had a big influence on the AFLs rule change in terms of shortening Ruckmans run up. Maybe an interesting point to discuss??

post #138 gotzy. And yes it specifically mentions Goodes......

Based on what?

Your expertise as an AFL ruck coach, a physical development expert, or as sports psychogist?

If the club deems it appropriate, I know that I don't have the background to call their judgment into question.

(goes for most things discussed on this forum, I know, but rarely are they accused of being negligent)

Neither do I.

But he's only just starting to get some proper game time up after his knee isn't he?

He's not on restricted game time.

If he's playing, he is fit.

He won't play so let's not get our hopes up. we get 4 weeks out of a mixture of Newton, Dunn, Martin and Campbell and he'll be 100% than I'll be happy. He's our future dont play him unfit when we're fighting for 10th spot this year

Can anyone show me confirmation he is injured??

Still nothing official from the club saying the extent of the injury? E.G timeframe?

Am I living in denial?

I dunno.

Are there Egyptians yelling at you to get out of the water?

We cannot go into a game without at least one player who can at least pretend to be a ruckman (ie: not Dunn or Newton). Newton might be useful backup but there has to be a ruckman. So, if Martin ends up ok, it's Martin +1. If Martin is out, it's Gawn +1. I don't care a whole lot if Newton comes in as backup or if we improvise with whatever we've got, but we can't start a game without a ruckman. We have to be ambitious and aim high. Yes, I know we're not in our 'window' but neither was Shane Warne in his first test.

re: Gawn's 'readiness' - how much more ready were/are the GCS ruckmen?

Zach Smith - 94kg 204cm

Max Gawn - 208cm 107kg

Great post.

Sh!t I'd be excited to watch big Maxy make his debut this weekend. Just spewing that I would have to watch it on TV, been waiting for this moment for a while!

I say roll the dice, have Gawn in for a half, then sub him for Newton...

Terrible suggestion.

If someone gets injured, your substitute plan is up-ended.

If a runner like Bail went down, you'd need to replace him with Newton and you'd have too many talls.

You can't use the sub to cover such a specialist position like the ruck.

Precisely, Artie. As you and rpfc have alluded to, this isn't denting flag aspirations at all, so what's the issue? It might be the difference between finishing 7th and 9th this year, that's not a big deal to me. The biggest disappointment for me is that Jake Spencer isn't going to be able to cash in on such a golden opportunity as he is/was clearly the second choice first ruck.

We're on the same page here.

I agree also. We have to have a marking scyscraper who can take a catch deep forward and run @ least for 5 Min' bursts. The rest can play Goodes roles.

Were you there? I'll ask it (at the risk of being shot down!)...did Jamar train?

Yes I was there. Jamar didn't train. Scully did some light running.

Max is listed at 107kg? Dammmnn, bring him in! He certainly doesn't look 107kg, but he's all we have and at 107kg, probably isn't too slight and underdeveloped either.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
