I've just finished reading the David Schwarz book "All Bets Are Off". A truely fascinating biography about the Ox's childhood, his footy career and his gambling addiction. A roller-coaster ride of immense highs and lows from start to finish. Essential reading for all Melbourne supporters and anyone under the grips of a gambling addiction.

Pretty sure he was average at best in the vfl, what makes anyone think he has what it takes at afl level? I would have thought he would be tearing up the vfl (injury free) im sure the fd would have considered him as they did last year but I don't like his chances

Pretty sure ? Absolutely sure ? Or unsure ?

Thorp put together a few good quarters here and there. As 'Axe' stated he was thrown around alot and spent a bit of time down back as well as forward - filling holes and set tasks. But even started out on the wing a few times, such is his good endurance. Not forgetting he is somewhere around 194cm.

From memory he kicked 3 goals in a quarter against the Bullants pushing forward from up the field taking contested marks playing against at the time with the likes of Thornton & O'Hailpin. I thought that was worth mentioning as well as his apparent work rate off the ball and reading the play.

He could be an option playing in one's backline.

But he must keep persisting and working hard to improve.

Definitely a low risk, high reward rookie pick if you ask me.

Imagine the delicious irony if we acquire Thorp and he finally gets his house in order and comes on, as the hawks in turn acquire Bruce as be begins his slide into AFL anonymity...

I love hating Hawthorn.

I love hating Hawthorn.

It's almost worth picking him up just in hope that it pans out that way.

I hate Hawthorn

Bruce?

It would very nice indeed. Six picks, he has to be worth the punt this guy.

Now that would bring a rather large smile to my face :):):)

I believe he is worth the punt and given that i know the MFC recruiters read and listen to everything that we say here on Demonland, i'm sure BP will agree with me and select him...

Somewhat irrelevant.

Why would that be irrelevant? If the guy had an attitude problem then it is clearly in the club's interest to ensure he doesn't have it any more (if indeed they are considering taking him).

Pretty relevant to me. Why do you think clubs take so much interest in a potential draft pick's family, schooling, leadership, attitude etc?

Wasted talent is a cliche but true. There's plenty of it around. Hundreds of examples of talented players that don't put in and ultimately fail.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

The Demons head back to Melbourne after an embarrassing loss to the Dockers to take on the Magpies at the MCG on Kings Birthday. With a calf injury to Lachie Hunter and Jacob van Rooyen possibly returning from injury who comes in and who goes out?
