Most over / under rated Melbourne players

Underrated

Jared Rivers - Not universally underrated by Demon fans, but massively underrated in terms of his importance to the team by a little too many of us for my liking. We need him in form and fit to be a top side.

Brent Moloney - Besides being a favourite of mine, we really don't have another proven, tough, inside midfielder than can stand up to pressure, and every side need those sorts of blokes.

Cameron Bruce - Not over his entire career, but this season. He doesn't hit every target, he can look slow, but he has so much experience and it shows in most contests, in his reading of the play, and when we're really under pressure. We're an inexperienced team and he is a real leader, and under appreciated.

Nathan Jones - He's no world beater and never will be. But few fight for the cause and get more out of themselves than Jones. He has deficiencies, especially his disposal and decision-making (at times), and he might not be guaranteed a game if everyone's fit, but that doesn't make him as bad as people make out. On plenty of occasions he is the one lifting his intensity and doing some crucial things when we're really under the pump. The kind of things that go unnoticed but can keep you in the game when it really matters. We need depth, especially in midfield, and I feel he is under-appreciated.

Overrated

Mark Jamar - Is a decent ruckman, but that's it. He's vitally important to us as we have no one else that can do the job adequately and our midfield is pretty inexperienced and a little undersized. I know this contradicts what I've said about Rivers, but being important isn't the same as being great. He "may" have been the second best ruckman in 2010, but again, that doesn't make him a great footballer at the top level. I still love him and appreciate what he does, just think he's overrated by plenty.

Melbourne's premiership chances - I know this is supposed to be players only, but I couldn't resist. We're building a great side, and everything about the club is on the up and we are rightly positive about our chances in the next five years or so. But no matter how well prepared we are, how much we improve, so much has to go right to win a flag. Some talk about a flag as a given, as if it's just going to happen at some stage in the next five years.

Can you name them? I have never heard anyone speak of it as a given at all. Everyone is hopeful.

Mark Jamar - overrated - well I have heard it all. Guess we know what an AA is worth then.

I can name them, but I don't think you will know them ...

As for Jamar, I understand not many on this site will share my view, but that doesn't change anything. I agree with his selection in the AA team, but being the 2nd best ruckman in the league doesn't mean he's not overrated. An AA can be overrated. So can a brownlow medalist. So can anyone.

1. Who has overrated Jamar ? Or who is plenty ?

2. Who talks about a flag as a "given?"

I've only ever read about a window of opportunity ie. 2013-2019.

You can PM them to me.

On the performances in 2010, bar Sandilands who was better than Jamar?

I've given a little description of what I think of Jamar's ability as a player. If everyone (or five people) on this site gave their own little description, my guess is that they would rate him higher than I do. That would support my belief that he is overrated.

I've discussed Jamar with other Melbourne fans and I think they too overrate him. These discussions did not happen online, they were not recorded, so I cannot provide you with hard evidence of them ever taking place. But that is not the point I'm making. In case I haven't made it clear, most Melbourne fans rate Jamar as a better footballer than I do - that's why I think he is overrated.

Jamar being overrated is ridiculous.

Wins in the ruck? Check.

Uses his big body to advantage? Check.

Takes contested marks? Check.

Kicks goals when moved forward? Check.

Those things alone are enough to qualify his worth.

Not to mention how much better he has become in being involved in links of general play and ironing out stupid mistakes he used to make.

The guy dominated most other ruckmen for a year and a half. He has arrived and is worth his weight in gold.

Underrated.

Moloney.

Overrated.

Bennell.

I'm gonna put my neck out here and say that every club, including Gold Coast and Western Sydney, could win the flag by 2019 ... We might not have one current player still playing for us in 2019.

You've stated Jamar is a decent ruckman. I think most Melbourne fans would agree with that.

If you have a look at the Top 5 thread re: favourite players, it may give you a snippet of what people around think around here. Jamar certainly not overrated here from what I've read. Others may not share this view.

That said, I think in the main, people are chuffed or pleased that he won AA selection based on a "decent" (very good) year.

If you want a description from me (not sure if I have commented on his review thread), I'd say he is a ruckman that has matured and learnt through hard work, nothing spectacular, but a consistent honest ruckman who can compete with any ruckman within the AFL today. Glad we've got him. Who has just had his most consistent and best season to date; and who has quite rightly won and deserved AA selection.

Is that overrating him ?

I agree with everything you've said about Jamar, and really like what he brings to the team. He is one of, if not the most, important player(s) in the team. But I think that is more to do with what we don't have in terms of experienced rucks who can get the job done, as opposed to Jamar being a dominant, great AFL player. I just don't rate him as highly as most Melbourne fans do. That doesn't mean I don't think he is vital to our success.

It was my view of Jamar that prompted me to start this topic. The responses I'm getting show me that I am right in thinking that Jamar is overrated. I'm not saying you are all wrong, I'm just saying you rate him a lot higher than I do.

I agree with that. I'd say we rate hima round the same level. I can tell that we are gonna be friends!

Are these over/under rated from us, or the outside?

I don't think anyone on our list is neccessarily over or under rated on this site. Maybe McKenzie from the outside?

Either, mate. I prefer it when people say what they think as opposed to pressing me for evidence to back up my opinion. It's an opinion, we disagree, we argue, it's what happens, it's why we're here.

Jamar is overrated? He wishes. And Jones is not underrated. He is very one dimensional, but a valuable player. I think most people appreciate him as such.

Why would Jamar wish to be overrated?

Well then. I claimed a few weeks ago that someone suggesting that we should take Jason Laycock was the worst post of the year. But then you come along and make the ridiculous assertion that Jamar is over-rated, and thus we have another contender.

For someone who has struggled to hold his spot, to someone who is, clearly, the competition's second best ruckman, who spends every last morsel of energy in his body to ensure he can keep rucking to the end (have a look at him after the Darwin game. He had nothing left), who is a dangerous forward when he can go there, with virtually no support, I think he is perfectly rated.

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm
