Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Frawley vs Riewoldt

Back Flanker

That's great. He was beaten.

He was, soundly.

But I remember being at the match and wondering why he wasn't moving like normal.

He was moving like Brown when he was playing with injury.

It wasn't until after the match when I heard one of the players was close to withdrawing due to illness, that I knew it was him.

No doubt in my mind.

Richmond have 1 forward. We have 3 backmen all capable of taking him on, and will work together as a team to do that.

Ninthmond have 1 tactic...kick it long to Richo...er...Riewoldt.

Not so.

They have had a good spread of goalkickers in recent weeks, with even Jake King getting in on the act kicking the highest score in their round 18 match (?!)

You really know when that happens that something must be going right down at Punt Rd.

13 of the last week I think. The mids need to keep the pressure on them to make the delivery slow and wide. (Conversely they will need to do the same thing to us).

I wouldn't be surprised if Garland went to Reiwoldt and Frawley played further away from goal. Garland has been absolutely fantastic on a whole range of players and I think he'd probably match up on him pretty well. He wasn't outmuscled by Fev last week and also had the pace to go with him.

What it also does is allow Frawley to play the rebounding defender which he has started doing really well. Look at the way Geelong set up, or the Bulldogs. They have the two best full backs in the league, but they often play on the second best forwards while Taylor and Morris/Williams take the number 1 forward.

It wouldn't surprise me if we set up that way. Obviously Frawley is probably our best bet on him at the moment defensively, but does his attacking run from defence mean that he's more valuable being released (since Garland is capable of doing the defensive job well)?

this match up is going to be interesting in years to come, but i can see frawley smashing him in most one on one contests, i am more worried about the match up of newman and deledio, because if they get the pill in their hands near the wing in space, it will be hard for any defender to stop a forward. i think dunn will go to one of them as they have been playing in the backline, maybe bruce as well, hopefully we can stop these two, as i think that will get us the win.

Chip will own the ginga this time around.

I'd go with what Bob mentioned - Garland on Riewoldt this time. Frawley may have a special task with another Richmond forward. Best thing is, we've got options and alternative match-ups if need be. They can always make the switch. Garland has good speed and good reach. I'm sure the Fd have done some good homework.

As mentioned by another poster, Richmond had a spread of thirteen goalkickers last week. Our mids will have their work cut out again to create pressure further up the field. If they do that well Richmond will eventually look to bomb it long to the goal square on occassions for Jack.

If Jamar plays to his form, the Tigers are in trouble.

Hi all, in the last game they met Jack Reiwoldt certainly beat James Frawley in the first half but in the second Riewoldt was ineffective and Frawley much improved. James looked a bit rattled after Jack kicked the first few goals on him. At the time Jack was not considered a gun player as he is now and perhaps James played accordingly. Will be interesting to see how James responds this time.

I think Garry Lyon is reading this forum.. http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/one-for-the-future-20100806-11okx.html

"James Frawley versus Jack Riewoldt might just be the premier match-up for the next decade; the most promising key defender in the competition against the most promising key forward. The Demons took Frawley at pick 12 in the 2006 draft and the Tigers, with the very next selection, snapped up Reiwoldt.

Both clubs have struck gold here, and it further fuels the debate over the value of defender versus forward. Riewoldt is listed at 195 centimetres and weighs 93 kilograms. Frawley is 193 and 91. If you were going to dream up two more evenly matched opponents, I'm not sure you could have done any better. They are both superb athletes, great competitors and are barometers for their teams. What a contest it's shaping up to be."

Plagiarism!!!

Is Frawley All-Australian now?

He should be. If he isn't in the best 6 defenders in the league this season, then the selectors are on drugs.

And because he has beaten everyone from Brown, to Reiwoldt to that little cockroach in Milne, he could easily be selected as a FB, a CHB, or a back-pocket.

But even if he doesn't get selected, he'll definitely finish top 3 in our B&F, and I have a feeling he'd be happier with that honour than with an AA selection.

Chip won the day today. Garland to do a job on buddy again and Chip for Roughead next weekend.

If he is good enough to take those "bomb and hope" you refer to, he is a decent player.

These are similar to the stupid types of comments I hear about Watts. JR is a decent player, dont start talking [censored] about him.

Damn, I missed this little nugget.

You ma'am, are a moron.

I was giving Riewoldt credit.

Kicking 60+ goals with that sort of delivery is a brilliant effort.

How it was any way like a Watts comment is anyone's guess, but as I said, you're obviously a moron.

I think there is a good chance Warnock will come in and play on either Roughhead or Franklin.

Frawley and Reiwoldt read like a bizarro-world situation...

pick 12 vs pick 13

back vs forward

same height and size

both developed in poor performing teams

relation to champion saints defender vs relation to champion saints forward

both having their break out years this year

perhaps both AA (although the dees always fly under the radar for the selectors - I reckon Wowodin would be the only Brownlow not to be in the AA team)

Ultimately it is very hard to chose between them. I can assure you if we had Reiwoldt there would be no regrets regardless of how good Chip is.

Chip and JR will play major roles in both teams rising up the ladder. And when Chip is tearing forwards apart week after week while we are on the eve of winning premierships and Reiwoldt is kicking 100 while Richmond languish in 9th place...then we can all be sure we made the right pick.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
