Rising Star Award

Red Sox

Recommended Posts

Seeing as we have a thread going on Jordie McKenzie's hopeful nomination this week, thought I might ask the question on who we thought was likely to get up this year. For sure the award is not everything and doesn't always mean a player will go onto great heights (see Kosi and Riv!)but something for the kids to aspire to.

Some of the kids will start to drop off towards the end of the year you might expect.

I'll try to be unbiased and suggest that if Dustin Martin was not ineligible he would go a long way to winning this years award. IMO he, Trengove and Hanneberry have probably been the top 3 standouts when you look at consistency, effectiveness and composure.

Martin has probably had a fairly good hand in kicking clutch goals when the Tigers have needed it, as recently as again yesterday. As he is ineligible it comes down to Trengove and Hanneberry for mine.

Hanneberry seems to have dropped off just a little where Trengove has continued his consistent output. I thought he was magnificent yesterday and really looks like he has been playing for a lot longer than the 13 games to date.

No doubt that Trengove has been the more consistent between he and Scully. Not taking anything away from Skull in anyway as he has been excellent but probably just off the pace a little if comparing he and Trengove straight up. Trengove seems to have a bit more core strength than Skull just now but you can bet that Skull won't be lacking in any area for too long. I like how Trengove also seems to have plenty to say around the group.

We are very lucky to have them both.

I really do hope Trengove can continue his consistent form as it would be nice to see a Melbourne player up on a stage in September, even if only for this award it is something to take out of the season.

My money is on Scully.

He'll bounce back after a lull from having his wisdom teeth out.

I expect his last quarter of the season to be really strong.

I'm pretty new to Demonland.....have been astounded by the amount of negative threads/posts about another certain youngster of ours who I think is looking better each week but also just as surprised at the lack of threads/comments on Skull & JT.

Maybe I missed the early excitement?

Two of the more exciting youngsters that I have seen come onto our list in my time and we are all very lucky that we will get to watch them, together for many years to come.

Is it that we have a certain expectation of them already that it has been a bit quiet?

The two of them are going to be 'genuine stars' of the game.....hopefully superstars!

I think we all knew that both of Scully & JT would end up at the club this time last year and since then they've only gone on to prove from what everyone expected:

- that they are both capable and ready to compete from day one.

Looks a tight one Hannebery v Trengove at this stage for mine.

I'd probably give put my money on Hannebery if it was voted today. While JT's arguably been a little more consistent, Hannebery's probably had a couple more big games where he's had a real influence on the contest that might give him the edge in a competition where whoever springs to mind the most is going to get the votes.

Just had a read of the of the game yesterday and Hanneberry was impressive again. Seemingly will keep this pace for the remainder of the year.

Going to be a tight race this year.

Why is Martin ineligible, did I miss something?

You cant win the rising star if you are reported and points given equal over 100, under the sames rules as the Brownlow. See below.

Martin cannot win the Rising Star Award after pleading guilty to a front-on bump in Round 3.

The Tiger was not suspended after his guilty plea reduced the penalty to a reprimand, but the fact the original penalty was more than 100 demerit points makes him ineligible under the same rules that apply to the Brownlow Medal.

The AFL says Martin was nominated regardless to recognise him as one of the AFL's best 22 young players this season and to reward his junior football club, which receives a financial pack for every Rising Star nominee.

Why is Martin ineligible, did I miss something?

He got one of those suspensions that went over 100 pts or 125 or whatever it is and with the early plea, reduced the sentence so he didn't actually miss a week. But the fact that the charge was over 100 pts it means he is ineligible....silly really. Like the McKernan/Grant Brownlow!

Maybe it's because we're in Melbourne, but i'm astounded that Brisbane's Tom Rockliff isn't mentioned in Rising Star discussions more often!?

He's been UNBELIEVABLE this year, and looks like a real gem of a player. He's not quick nor overly athletic, but he just knocks up getting the footy, uses it well, knows how to find the goals and brings his teammates into the game. In the month prior to his nomination (last week), he had averaged just under 28 touches per game, and is averaging around 22 from his 11 matches in 2010. For a 19 year old who wasn't picked up until the rookie draft and only played the 1 game last year, that really is great going.

He's right up there with Hannebery, Trenners, Martin (if he was eligible), Scully, and early leader NikNat (who's nowhere to be seen these days). I'd love Trenners to win it, but i honestly think Rockliff will take it out at this stage.

If I recall correctly Whispering Jack was very keen for us to pick him up...shrewd judgement WJ

Indeed he did :)

A lot of the younger lads will be tiring right about now. Those with bigger engines and can go the distance whilst still putting in respectable games will be the ones vying for the prize. Scully and Trengove ought to do well in that regard. Look for a couple of standout perforamces from either/both in the month ahead.

According to the Footy Record interview with him last week (after his nom), Rockliff trained with the Demons and was guaranteed a spot on the rookie list if he made it that far. Unfortunately for us the Lions beat us to the punch in the preseason draft.

Cannot see anyone beating Trengove for this years Rising Star

Hannerbery is his only threat IMO but unless he or someone else has a purple patch for the rest of the season i think the

consistancy of Trengove will prevail

Scully IMO has had the standout game (against the bulldogs) but started slow and hasnt performed as consistantly as the top few

I do think the most important feedback we will get as to how good these players will become is how they perform in their second year

If I was giving the 5,4,3,2,1 votes this is the way I'd be going at this stage.

5) Daniel Hannebrey - Named in Sydney's best week in week out and had a huge influence and many of their wins.

4) Jack Trengove - All class who can't help but rack up possessions. Uses the ball well and just glides around the park with ease, looks like the Mark Waugh of AFL.

3) Dustin Martin - Is inelligable to win but can still receive votes. A boy in a mans body, reminds me of Nathan Jones in his first year although Martin uses it better and seems to have a calmer head on his shoulders.

2) Tom Scully - Number 1 draft pick who is a gun. Runs like Chris Judd and he can tell he's going to be an absolute gun once he's fully developed, just needs to tidy up his disposal and he'd already be one of the most dangerous players in the comp.

1) Tom Rockliff - Consistent player who has taken it all before him this year. Hasn't had the same influence on games the above named have but he still racks up plenty of possesions and has turned into a bargain pick for the Lions.

So for me Hannebrey pips Trengove, but only just!

Didn't realise that Martin could still receive votes?

I agree with your 5 names if that's the case. Going to be a tight race between them. All 5 looking like guns for a long time.

Hannebery has reached 20 disposals only 5 times in his 12 games, so I doubt he's been named in the Swans bests "week in week out". Trengove has been more consistent than Hannebery, but his best games haven't been as good as Hannbery's. Hannebery's two best games were very good.

Martin is good, but I suspect he's one of those players that won't get a lot better than he is now. He doesn't have the silk/balance of Trengove, nor the running ability.

too true DJ -Sometimes we take things for granted-the one whom I cannot get over re negative posts is Watts- 19 yrs old -196 cms tall -wow,what a future he has.He will take, say 3/4 years to reach something like his true ability. He could also win it-if he had a sensational last half- hope he kicks five goals today, becomes nominated and wins the award.

Didn't see Hannabery(sp?) today but I thought Trengove was awesome for us. He's got to be a red hot chance for the award. Could be a close run thing this year.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
