Geez any chance of making the deal worthwhile for the Hawks? Which player would you throw in? Why would they want to trade a player who is critical to their aspirations for a draft pick and what a second tier player.

Our trading in recent years....

TJ for pick 16 ----> Grimes

Brock for pick 12-----> Gysberts

We woukd have taken Ball through PSD but he did not want to go to MFC end of story.

And apparent success is no basis with late picks to trade your first round pick in future years.

Sorry RR - maybe if you read my entire paragraph instead of the first line you will see that I was talking about targeting a specific player rather than a specific type of player.

I totally agree, the players we have drafted from the picks we obtained in the trade period have turned out very well.

Carlton wanted Judd for their midfield, they got him in the trade. Geelong wanted Ottens for their ruck stocks, they got him. In 1997, Melbourne wanted the best ruckman available, we traded picks 2 and 18 for Jeff White.

What I am getting at is that we have an obvious need for a younger, proven, ready-made KPF. Let's name him (like I have with Roughead), and go out hard to get him. He would play a huge role in our flag aspirations.

Every player has a price - if we can make it attractive enough for Hawthorn without damaging out list, let's do it. Pick 12 and Rivers (for example), maybe Hawthorn can see strong benefits in that deal. I'm not qualified to say what Hawthorn thinks of that deal - AND NEITHER ARE YOU!!! Quality players don't come cheap, but sometimes you just have to pay it.

Hawthorn are in premiership mode. Why would they give up Roughhead for an unknown youngster who may take years to make it in AFL and a pedestrian limited defender? They give up alot while in their window of opportunity and get uncertainty and the ordinary. The Hawks would be daft to do it and they wont. Oh and I am qualified to say this because its my opinion just like you are qualified for yours. But its a one sided stinker of a deal that always typically favours MFC and treats the other side like trumps.

If the Hawks are going to give up a Premiership forward who is still important to them they will want a class KPB who is ready to go when they are. I believe its Frawley.

Would prefer MFC to continue to draft youth with whatever picks they end up with, to early in the rebuild to be trading picks for mature KPP.

I think Carlton rushed their rebuild when they traded for Brock, i don't want to see MFC do the same. We've all been though to much pain in the last couple of years, to rush it now.

i'd be prepared to throw the sink at roughead to get him. i think that type is exactly what we need.

mitch brown from geelong would be another i'd consider at a cheaper price.

from this years draft prospects i'd like either jack darling, andy gaffe or lucas cook with our first pick, where ever that may be.

Looking at the injury list today, one of the players that everyone was keen on recruiting in last years draft was Ben Griffiths. Big, strong marking key forward... one of the key problems is that he seemed to keep breaking down with injury. I had watched him when he came in for Richmond a couple of weeks ago and he was very very good... but... he is out for the season with a shoulder injury.... The kids not having much luck

I think if we really want a KPF, we are better off biting the bullet and chasing a ready-made big body, rather than picking up a kid from an opposition list. In a lot of ways, they would be just as much a project player as Watts and Fitzy are.

If we want tall key forwards, I'm more prepared to wait for 2-3 years and develop players like Watts and Fitzpatrick. Our premiership window won't open until 2013-14, and they'll be more ready by then.

I thought with Sylvia, Jurrah, Green and Watts on Saturday we had the beginnings of a functional and potent forward line. Throw in the possible capability of Fitzpatrick and Gawn to go forward when they develop, and the current capability of Jamar to do the same, and I'd question whether we need to trade for Roughead, particularly the price we'd need to pay.

No way would I ever give up Frawley for anyone.

More like a fantasy and a dream.

He was always going to Carlton despite the charade of the interviews. MFC did the right thing and puts its best foot forward for him but it was never a possibility and you overplay he barracked for MFC as a kid routine

Melbourne were never going to attract a big name player from any club for 3 reasons.

1. our craappy facilities

2. our perceived off- field weaknesses... huge debt, not paying full amount of salary cap because can't afford it, not spending much on the footy department etc

3. perception that we were years away from any kind of on-field success like premierships.

We are much better placed now to attract a key forward or ruckman or whoever we want to chase.

1. our facilities are now awesome

2. Off-field there are no major concerns any more.

3. Anybody can see we'll be playing finals for 5-6 years straight form 2012. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that

The young Tassie kid is a good mark and a pretty good shot at goal. Has only played the 3 senior games and is obviously behind Fevola and Brown for the next 3 years.

He was taken pick 57 is the 2008 draft I think it was mentioned so wouldn't cost the world but Brisbane may ask for someone like Bail or Maric in return as they lack pace through the midfield.

Totally agree B59, I think what we have in our own paddock just grazing and fattening up will show some good cattle. If we wanted to add to that herd, we would look ONLY at a big bull, one with a good pedigree. Anything else would be a pointless exercise.

I think our forward line this year is where our backline was 3 years ago, now look at the beast it has grown in to!

Cornelius i am pretty sure will be in that number three forward for a while but may pay off in spades as he will be learning from two fantastic forwards in Brown and Fev.

We could have had Cornelius but intead we selected Jetta at pick 51 and Bail at 64 because Bailey wanted mids, mids and more mids. There were good raps on Cornelius at the time particularly his marking and goalkicking ability. I was surprised he lasted to 57. With Jack Viney likely to be a demon it's time we strengthened our KP, Ruck division and run out of defence positions.

It's also a shame we didn't pick Liam Picken in that rookie draft (pick 30) instead of Ryse Healey (17).

The more I think about it, the more I reckon having 1 good KP forward plus one or two ok ones that come in and out of the side (Watts, then Bate/Jurrah whoever), is actually the way modern sides seem to compete. A goal from a small forward is worth as many point as a goal from a tall, and it's not as if KP players are kicking bags of 7 and 8 regularly. A good game from a small forward is 4 goals, and that's not massively different from a good game from a tall.

I reckon as long as the players we get CAN mark, can contest, can run and tackle back the other way, and most importantly can kick straight, then I reckon a forward line full of Petterd/Green/Sylvia/Jurrah/Wonna/Bennell type players can actually do a lot of damage. Everyone likes the twin towers thing... but I'm happy enough of the players we have there are just reliable. The defence and midfield is where we have the real class anyway.

I think your right that we have 3 years for young Jack to grow up into a Strong Forward, as well as another we may draft this draft. But, to recruit an established tall forward, one who already has built a body & can take an overhead mark, not necessarily a star, but who can add some balance to our structure forward, would be beneficial for our progression up the ladder.

Just to throw up a smokey from the VFL, James Lawton from Coburg. 197cm forward who can take a speccie and kick freakish goals. Very agile. Improving each week. Only 18 or 19y.o. From a small town in Country NSW and has come down to try his luck in the VFL. Started the year in the 2's, but is now performing very well in the senior team. With a bit more muscle on his frame I reckon this boy is well worth a shot. Probably as a rookie selection.
