Our depth never looked better

Looking at the Casey team for the weekend, I count no less than eleven guys who I reckon are all seriously pushing for spots with the Melb team, and who would probably be automatic starters, and acquit themselves well, if there was a need in the Melb team. Great signs!

I count 16 Melbourne list players. And we still have Jurrah, Blease, Tapscott, Petterd, Fitzpatrick and Gawn to return from injury.

As Morton found out this week, it's very tough to get into the senior team at the moment.

The exception might be Garland. He had a very interrupted 2009 and pre season and missed all the NAB matches, yet he jumped into the firsts after a couple of practice matches with Casey. The club must have a very high opinion of him.

There are five players from that list that I want to see in the 22 "Gysberts, Bail, Jetta, Morton & Wonna", but there is no one I want out of the 22.

Frustrating for the FD

Joel MacDonald won't be making it back in the side anytime

soon.

He may have a spot if Garland moves into the forward line and Bruce retire, both not likely, poor MacDonald. Handy player to have in reserve none the less.

Great depth: Morton, Gysberts, Strauss, Bail, Wona, Jetta,

Not sure: Macdonald, Dunn, Maric, McNamara, Cheney

Years away: Spencer

Bad Depth: Bell, Newton, Miller, Healey

Plenty still to come as well.

I agree with the above.

A good realistic assessment, but need to include the injured Jurrah, Blease, Tapscott, Petterd, with Gawn a real unknown !!!

I don't think that has anything to do with Morton playing for Casey this week.

If he was fit etc then he'd get a gig with the Dees.

Agreed we are starting to get some REAL talent and depth on our list. With the likes of McKenzie, Hughes, Tom Mac, Stef Martin etc coming through we actually look like a talented side. Hell, even Juice is looking good as a depth player LOL.

I was actually thinking the other day that it's starting to get hard to think of players will have to get rid of end of year. Of course the obvious names/whipping boys will be thrown up ie. Miller, Newton, PJ and Spencer, but just think of the list in 2-3 years time when changes will have to be made. Apart from the guarenteed retirements I think our football dept will have some very difficult decisions to make in the coming years!

Meesen's name has absolutely no place in that company.

He won't come back. He's a spud. Besides that, we'd need a rash of injuries for him to even be eligible to play. So seeing Meesen in red & blue again would be a disaster on two fronts.

That's a bit unfair. Certainly doesn't deserve to be called a "spud". The guy has been cruelled with injury. The couple of times he was able to get on the park last year, he really showed something. The Footy Dept also obviously see something in him.

Don't forget Danny Hughes has also laboured through many years of debilitating injury. Again, the Footy Dept stuck with him, and he finally got his chance last week.

I just think we should be a little more circumspect about the way we refer to the guys on our list. Really think they deserve a little more respect than they are sometimes shown. Surely, we can place our views on here without stooping to name calling.

I've said it before and before he even played his first game - he won't be on the list in 2 years' time.

we have good depth but still no 'power forward'...

Keep your eye on Fitzpatrick over the coming years, he could be the answer your looking for IMO.

Hate to say it as I like MacDonald but I have to agree with you. With Warnock, Frawley, Garland and Rvers already in the team, and the club most likely to prefer McNamara as a long term prospect, I can't see a spot for MacDonald on our list after the 2011 season.

Why is Healey bad depth, or were you one of those questioning why Danny Hughes was still on the list, try reading the Scorps reviews from the last couple of weeks....like against the Coburg Tigers

Rhys Healey - Kicks 5, Handballs 4, Marks 1, Tackles 3, Goals 1

We’ve been giving Rhys tagging roles, and we did that again on the weekend. He’s doing a fair job, and he even chimed in for a goal. He escaped his man to get a shot at goal, and he looked lively at different stages, and set up some goal scoring opportunities for us, which was great, so he’s going along quite nicely too, as a rookie. He varied between midfield and half forward, but a defensive half forward, because they had that Jordan McMahon, and Rhys matched up on him to curb his attacking influence.

The FD seems quite pleased with his progress....

With new teams coming in, if decent players can't get a game with us, then expect to lose a few.

This may be another way bottoming out when we did may help us. As far as other fans are concerned, when some of these players are discussed, it becomes "They can't even get a game with MELBOURNE FFS."

I'm not saying that the administrators at GC & GWS will be THAT narrow-minded / short-sighted, but remember that GWS did hire Sheeds.

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
