only been listening to the 3rd quarter tjog, no injuries reported on the radio, cheney playing well again, havent really heard wona, and morton getting touches as usual, we are belting them "pittiful football from coburg" so not much competition

hope it helps, people there would be able to be more insightful

Aaah. They're a Tigers outfit. Ok. Well Watts will need to kick 12 for it to be a good enough game then.

:D

Any word on Morton? Just heard Aussies name on radio. Good to hear he's not injured.

According to 'ology... it's MITCH Morton who just went off with the blood rule.

I know Coburg are terrible, I mean a side full of Richmond rejects can't be any good, but I think that this shows that with good delivery (and I assume that less pressure on Casey from Coburg means more time to dispose of the ball and better forward delivery), Watts can play very well.

He'll enjoy having Trengove/Grimes/Scully/Sylvia/Moloney kicking it to him on a lead at the MCG.

It also shows that Watts is fine playing at CHF, and shouldn't be moved from here on in. It's not like the other options are any better.

So 4 for Jack, with Morton and Wonna playing good games. Gys showing a bit in the first half.

Watts is the big part though. That's 1 good game out of the way for Bailey.

Actually could be more than one in Baileys eyes. On SEN this morning when asked about Watts he said hes already played a couple of "good games" for Casey and he hopes he plays well again today. Looks like he did that so we may see him sooner rather than later.

Didn't hear that but it makes sense... i reckon DB will, after today's efforts, find it quite easy to say "well he's been performing consistently" to the media when in fact he was average last week. Details can be glossed over. Should be in the team against Port if not the Eagles IMO.

Eagles? Hmm. a) need to find a place and B) a certain NN would be asking for comparisons that perhaps Jack and the club could do without for the moment. But ... emergency perhaps?

However ... Casey play on the Sat arvo as well, and then there's no Casey game the following week. So, if Jack was emergency, and then didn't play for MFC, he wouldn't get a game back with Casey till 2 weeks later and could start to miss out on game-time.

I'd say he'll do another week in Casey, with a view to bringing him the following week.

Priceless comment from a Dees supporter behind the Casey goal in the last quarter.

Casey had just kicked a point and Jordie McMahon was preparing to kick in for Coburg.

A guy yells out " Thanks for Jack Trengove Jordie "

I did feel sorry for poor Jordie but could not help but smile with agreement.....

Watts played well today, one shot shaved the inside of the goal post, I think he ended with 4.2, and kicked two quick goals in the first I think it was. All in all he is looking good. And nearly took a nice grab in the last quarter. A few more games for Casey and he should be ready for the seniors. Not long now. For all those who say JW is a dud, make an effort to see him play in Casey before making ill informed comments.

Wonna, hit the post 2 or 3 times today, he is moving good, few more weeks then back into the seniors

Jetta, I like the way he plays.

Miller played well, gave away a stupid 50 and missed some shots on goal

Gysberts will be a very handy player for MFC, the way he plays he will get his chance sooner rather than later.

Maric not 100% on the kid, he is a few few few few games away from playing for the MFC

Cheney looked good also.

PS, First every Casey game for me, and there will be plenty more for me, loved it today.

Hard to pick out some of the players today.

If the lad is ready then play him if he's not then don't simple as that. Comparisons will happen regardless - if, and that is a big if, he's ready for a recall it could be a great bit of motivation for him to silence his critics and maybe some of the media who think the sun shines out of NN's backside. Don't not play him because the observations may be negative - they may well be positive observations. We can't keep on keeping him in cotton wool because of what may or may not be said. If the FD reckon it will help our side win by playing him then he plays regardless of media, if he they reckon he needs more time for whatever reason then he needs more time.

Was at the game today and was happy with the effort.....

Here is my thoughts on the Melbourne boys. If I miss anyone just ask me.

Cale Morton - Was good to see Morton again, and great that he ran out the game. Not much you can really say about his game though. It's Cale, you all know what he does and he did it as usual.

He kicked a nice goal and had a hand in another. Either straight in or one week at Casey for fitness.

Daniel Bell - As always Belly works hard, he took a really nice mark under pressure, but still to often has poor awareness. Good to see him running out games though and not getting an injury. Just a game.

Addam Maric - Despite 1 goal and a few nice pieces of skill, this kid flat out annoys me and it still shocks me why people on here rate him so highly and always want him in every week. Tries to do to much and take everyone on. There was one point where I thought Miller was going to kill him as Maric got mowed down for his 3rd holding the ball call as he tried to kick himself a miracle goal inside of kicking it to Miller 15mtrs away all by himself infront of goal.

Brad Miller - Lead very well and used his big body, missed an easy shot on goal which you expect from Miller haha. But you can't ever question his work rate... Will find it tough to take the spot of Hughes with games like that. However I will also say, his protection of Watts is really admirable.

Juice Newton - Juice did ok. I guess. Wasn't really sited much as Miller and Watts were definately the more prominent targets. His opponent was an annoying tool who thinks his tough.

Tom Mac - Had some really great marks in the defensive 50 and kicked a goal from about 50 which was really good. Plays smart and confident. Just bad luck for him that there are so many defenders currently ahead of him at Melbourne.

Joel Mac - Macdonald is just a man. Strong in one on ones and consistent. Didn't dominate the game or anything but worked hard. Seemed more prominent in the 2nd half of the game when he found a bit of space to get some good touches of the footy.

Rhys Healey - Didn't see alot of him, but when I did see him it seemed like he did pretty well. He had one passage of play that I gave him a big clap for, was courageous and classy possession. I walked away remembering that moment, was really good.

Jordan Gysberts - Gizmo is all class. Had alot of the footy and his skills are top notch. Loved his work and can't wait to see an AFL debut this year. Does not have an AFL body as he lacks size, but he was smart and much like Morton seems to have alot of the time with the ball.

Jake Spencer - Strong game in the ruck. Beat his opponent all day and was very physical. But with Spencer you always find a negative in my opinion, the gangly man kicked a set shot on the full and he had a few rotten kicks. Spencer, please handball.

Neville Jetta - Love the way he pressures his opponents, run run run! He still needs to get a bit fitter but he was good, very vocal which I liked. He pushed himself a few times today and it was a step in the right direction.

Jack Watts - I just want to start this by saying one thing.... That Jack Watts thread is ridiculous and anyone who has bagged him, considered he won't make it, said we should have picked NicNat etc.... I just wanna say STFU. Now, he was really good today, kicked 4 goals and gave off 2. Thats 6 scores he was a major part in. Sadly missed 2 set shots that were pretty difficult, could have been 6 today. He has soooooooooooo much time with the ball. Makes smart decisions and has quick hands. Loved it today, almost everytime he got the ball he did something positive with it. His one handed mark, play on, side step, run 5 metres, side step, snap, goal... was awesome! There was 1 moment when he ran up field to the midfield, the ball was bouncing in the air and he was waiting for it to come down, he looked up, he looked behind him for about 0.2 of a second, picked up the ball and immediately side stepped the player who was about to mow him down. The time and awareness in that situation to know exactly who will hit him was priceless and my fav moment of the day. I am still in love with Jack Watts haha.

Austin Wonaeamirri - Good effort from Aussie, was great to see him again. He worked hard and his skills are still great. However his game aside it was just a really positive thing that he made it through the game. Another 2 weeks at Casey to get the fitness up. His forward line pressure was great today and he will still fit our team perfectly. Was denied a goal due to the umpire denying advantage and missed 2 good snaps. Could have easily been a 3 goal game.

Kyle Cheney - He is such a solid boy. Strong and confident in his body. Played another good game and did well on his opponent. Was a good showing and surely at some point in the year we will see him in the red and blue again.

Great effort by the boys from Casey, Stockdale is a ripper and Wall could find himself rookie listed one day, always consistent.

Jordan McMahon - Feel like I should mention the forgotten Demon. He is fast, but a dud and his once beautiful skills at the Doggies are long gone. Smiled everytime I saw him touch the footy.

Hope thats an ok review, if you have any questions just ask.

It was a very good game to watch from our boys. Loved some things. I admit I went mainly to see how Watts is coming along and I was very pleasantly surprised. My impressions of the Melbourne players as follows:

Watts - Aside from the 4 goals (all from marks, 2 of the contested and one a ripping one-hander against two opponents) he had a few nice goal assists and one magic play on the wing where he was crunched in a pack of four or five opponents, somehow stayed upright, grabbed the ball and slipped out the side to find a passing teammate. He also very nearly pulled off a nice crumbing goal off a Newton spillage, but lost traction trying to turn before the boundary and wound up sliding across the line.

Morton - Good game first up. They were using him in short bursts, so he didn't have huge impact. Kicked a very nice goal and showed no sign of being worried about contact. Got crunched a few times in contests and was always up for more.

Wonna - His radar was a little off today. Got plenty of the ball and looked dangerous but couldn't quite get it through the big sticks.

Jetta - I like this guy. His pressure is great and he can take a good mark for a small player.

Newton - He was present. You noticed him, but he didn't really do much. His goal was from a behind the play free kick and 50m penalty.

Miller - Looked quite good, but still can't kick. Missed a couple of shots he should have made. However, he kept presenting, took a few good marks on the lead and when the Coburb fullback was getting stuck into Watts he stepped in and got involved.

Gysberts - He can't be far off his debut for the demons. Once again some very good touches. He's also a much better runner than he looks.

Maric - I don't think he's going to make it as an AFL player. Did some good things, but too often didn't.

Cheney - Was really good with his defensive efforts, but disposal let him down, both in terms of delivery and decisions.

Spencer - Dominated. I don't understand why he can't do this at AFL level. Must be a confidence thing, because he was fast, athletic and powerful. Took some really good marks, acted as a link man and generally tore them apart.

Healy - Honestly didn't notice him much. He missed set shot, but that's all I can tell you about his game.

This Spencer review sounds like a Jamar review from a few years ago. The Spence is still 20 years old, by the time he is Jamar's age at 26 he might be a good AFL player, we have to remember that. He'll never be an amazing user of the ball, but he's taller than Jamar at around 204cm and could be a very strong unit.

Very happy about Watts, Morton, Gysberts and Wonaeamirri. Would love to see Tommy Mac given a go in Rivers' position (as well as Strauss in Bartrams). Cheney I have little time for at AFL level. From what I've seen from Maric at AFL level he's looked a player, but his VFL reviews almost get worse by the week. Very disappointing.

My mail is Wona will play up in Darwin if anywhere near fit or near selection. Base on his game today, it is possible he could have a good one next week and have 'earnt' selection?

Agree, it was so exciting to see him out there today, I was a little worried when he went off the field to have his ankle checked, my heart rate increased. Didnt keep track of how long he played but he looked a little tired in the fourth (slouched over, hand on knees).

Not long now for the young man.... Then Watts to come in in a few weeks, then Jurrah, WAY down the track. :)

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
