Jack Watts/Royce Hart

People on this site have hoped that Watts will end up being a Jonathon Brown or Nick Riewolt. I commented earlier this year that I thought he was much more likely to be a Royce Hart. A fast, highly skilled, floating type CHF. I noticed this morning the AFL site has a bigpond highlight package of Royce Hart. It confirmed in my mind that this is the type of player that Watts might be. For those who are too young to remember Hart, have a look http://bigpondvideo.com/AFL/255610 . If Jacky boy ends up like this I will be very happy.

I too would be happy if Watts ended up similar to the AFL/VFL TEAM OF THE CENTURY CENTRE HALF FORWARD.

Your comments about his playing style are correct, but for the modern day interpretation of the CHF role Riewoldt has to be the benchmark for Watts, especially with their similar body types.

One of the most damaging qualities Nick Riewolt has is his elite endurance running. For all of his athletic qualities does anyone know if Jack Watts has the engine to become a top class CHF?

Dean Baily (not word for word quote): He's struggling to cope with the demands of elite AFL level training... which is harder for the tall blokes.

Not sure if that sounds like a player who has an elite engine.

btdemon, no offence, but this is a shocker of a post. Royce Hart was a tall, lanky left footer that played CHF for a team that won a couple of flags in his time. There was no zoning, so he was always up against one opponent in a match - up and 'kick it long' and the 'torp' in a big pack was the only style of attack.

It was Leigh Matthews who wasn't impressed with Jack Watts, saying that there was nothing 'outstanding' about him - he is a growing boy who has a looonnggggg way to go.

I hope this club doesn't rue the decision not to take Nit Nat......

bottom line is we needed a forward badly and there was also the go-home factor. Everyone knew we would/should take the safer bet over the ruckman with huge question marks over his game. Whether it owrks out or not you can't fault the decision at the time, same goes for sculgove and Morton, there were no surprises on draft night for these very high picks

You're right, 100% agree - the go home factor was always going to be a biggie. I want big Jack to be fast tracked, but all these comparisons and expectations are weighing heavily on everyone. I hope he doesn't end up like a Tambling, who is completely confused about his football.

I'm more looking forward to the day a 22 year old Watts rips a game apart. I really couldn't care less what that pineapple head does.

Hehe Well im just saying, jumping the gun on potential/comparisons can lead to bitter disappointment. I think grigic was meant to be the "next Garry lyon".

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
